fix(webview): invalidate live sibling view state on reset and settings import (vps2 F4) - #1562
Tracking: fork issue 41 (vps2 series ledger). Upstream issue: #1561 (this series' gap record; the original upstream bug is #980). Port source: upstream PR #981 (fix(webview): invalidate per-view state after reset and import) — closed draft, superseded by the vps2 series; the fork issue 41 ledger names #981 as the F4 port source.
src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts — broadcastResetToAllInstances(): every live instance clears its in-memory view-local state (_clearViewLocalState), the single global viewStates clear removes the durable per-view entries in one write-queue clear, and each non-calling instance re-posts its state to its webview. Wired into resetState before its final postStateToWebview(). This round also: the F1a view-identity review fixes are ported into this unit's copy (temporary-id authorship flag, ownsTargetEntry re-key gate, null-prototype viewStates, loadViewState ownership guard, setValue/setValues rollback).
src/core/config/importExport.ts — ImportWithProviderOptions gains the optional broadcastResetToAllInstances(); importSettingsWithFeedback broadcasts after the settingsImportedAt write behind a try/catch (a broadcast failure is console.warn'd and never fails the import).
src/core/config/tests/importExport.spec.ts — the 3 ported tests (broadcast on success; skip when the callback is missing with a console.warn negative assertion; import stays successful when the broadcast throws).
src/core/webview/tests/ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts — the F4 multi-instance + _clearViewLocalState describes (CS-verbatim); this round every construction passes the shared WebviewFocusTracker.
src/core/webview/tests/ClineProvider.spec.ts — the F3 resetState sentinel forward fix (viewStates key removed, toBeUndefined) plus this round's ported sticky-mode persisted-view-state-keys suite, rollback tests, and re-key ownership adaptations.
src/extension/tests/api-set-configuration.spec.ts — passes the required ClineProviderFactory argument (main's new constructor parameter).
Upstream main 793b65b merged (this round): 5 conflicts reconciled both-sides — openClineInNewTab keeps the serialized flow on main's typed options + shared tracker; getState keeps the per-view mergedStateValues reads including main's new alwaysDenyUnapprovedCommands; the non-await postMessage path keeps the original-content strip.
Budget
Unit delta vs the stack base: 5 files, +342/-1 — well under the 400-soft budget. The PR diff vs upstream/main is larger because the branch is stacked on the unmerged F1-F2 series; the series merges bottom-up, at which point each PR's CI gate measures its own unit. The CI mutation-diff changed-line advisory is a by-construction artifact of the stacked diff.
vitest: ClineProvider.spec + sticky-mode + registerCommands + parallelMode + api-set-configuration 404/407 (the 3 failures are local-only: the donor-built @roo-code/types dist predates alwaysDenyUnapprovedCommands, so globalSettingsSchema strips it locally; CI builds types from source); webview-ui ExtensionStateContext 25/25; packages/types global-settings 9/9.
eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on all touched files; eslint-suppressions ClineProvider.spec.ts 196 -> 194 (decrease), no count increased.
Negative control: forcing the re-key ownership check to true reddens sticky-mode "does not merge a stale temporary-id entry"; restored byte-exact (sha256 match).
Prettier: full-repo check passes on the PR merge tree (merge ref 52a8a93).
Ported the F1a view-identity review fixes into this unit's ClineProvider copy; adapted the re-key tests to author entries through the real write path; ported the sticky-mode persisted-view-state-keys suite, rollback tests and the viewStates global-setting tests.
Added the required WebviewFocusTracker constructor argument to the 84 ClineProvider.spec and 44 parallelMode.spec constructions; api-set-configuration.spec passes the required ClineProviderFactory.
Unit-delta local Stryker preflight was certified at the pre-merge head; the stacked CI mutation-diff reports a changed-line cap artifact by construction (inherited shared content).
Series mechanics
PR base is main; the branch is stacked on the F2 head; merge order F1a -> F1b -> F1c -> F2 -> F3 -> F4 -> F5 -> F6 -> F7.
CS not-ported register (for consistency): kimi-code OAuth try/catch + routerModels.spec +29; ApiConfigManager min-w-0->grow; ApiConfigManager.visual.tsx deletion + 2 PNG baselines; mojibake comment; providers/, .coderabbit.yaml, .github/, CONTRIBUTING.md, .gitignore churn — none of these touch the files in this PR.
Security Boundaries / view-state id rows: addressed at 7e649e9. setViewStateId now rejects non-string ids (crafted postMessage), bounds the key length (MAX_VIEW_STATE_ID_LENGTH), and refuses ids already owned by another live instance; a refused view stays on its temporary id against shared state. Regression tests: non-string, oversized, claimed-by-another-view. Negative controls: disabling the ownership check reddens exactly the claim test; widening the length bound reddens exactly the oversized test; restores byte-exact (hash match).
The spec gained an afterEach clearing the static instance registry (suites construct providers directly and never dispose most of them; leaked instances would claim ids ahead of later tests).
Persistence Integrity setValues/setValue ordering rows: verified already addressed by the pushed code: _saveViewLocalStateFromMutation persists the non-secret subset before updating the buffer; the re-key is a single queued write (no delete-then-write window; authorship clears only after the write lands); the mutation hook keeps the buffer synced across setValue/setValues and profile upsert/activation/deletion.
Proofs at 7e649e9: sticky-mode 33/33; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Non-activating saves (upsertProviderProfile with activate=false, and the zoo-gateway callback's non-active path) rewrote the profile on disk but left pinned views serving the pre-save snapshot; the non-activating branch now refreshes pinned sibling views (and this view when it holds the pin), and the callback routes through upsertProviderProfile so the refresh cannot be forgotten.
getState() no longer spreads the pinned overlay over the shared provider settings (a key the profile never defined leaked in from the shared profile: model id, region, tuning). The overlay is a complete snapshot: used in place, with only apiProvider falling back to shared state.
Regression tests: "refreshes views pinned to a profile saved without activation"; "does not leak shared provider keys into a pinned view's api configuration; the zoo-gateway callback test asserts the upsert path.
Negative controls: dropping the else-branch refresh reddens exactly the refresh test, reverting the merge semantics reddens exactly the leak test; restores byte-exact (hash match).
Proofs at 73c0b90: ClineProvider.spec green, sticky-mode and webviewMessageHandler green, eslint --max-warnings=0 clean, tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines, prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: overlay read from the view buffer (required-lane fix)
The previous round's overlay-completeness change read the overlay from the merged state values, which also carry the raw apiConfiguration state key. That key is a partial patch written by shared-store paths, not a view snapshot: with no overlay present and the raw key partial, getState() served only the partial object and dropped the shared provider settings the previous merge produced (the parallel-mode activation tests caught exactly this - the activated profile's model id vanished; required lane red on the units carrying that spec). The overlay is now read from the view buffer itself, where a present value is by contract a complete profile and an absent one means the shared store serves the settings.
Proofs: ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec green where present (the six synchronization tests that regressed), ClineProvider.spec green including the overlay-completeness tests, sticky-mode and webviewMessageHandler green; negative control: reverting the overlay to a shallow merge over the shared settings still reddens exactly the leak test; restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: active task handlers rebuilt on non-activating saves (head 59744fd)
A review round on the view-identity unit found that the non-activating-save refresh updated pinned views' buffers but not their active tasks' API handlers, and the posted state prefers the task's own apiConfiguration: a conversation running in a view pinned to the saved profile kept sending the old token (e.g. after the Zoo Gateway callback rotated it) even though the view's buffer had caught up. The refresh now rebuilds the affected tasks' handlers in the pinned views, and the non-activating branch rebuilds this view's own handler when it holds the pin.
Proofs: ClineProvider.spec green (the pinned-sibling refresh test now asserts the active task's handler is rebuilt with the saved settings, not just the private buffer); negative control: dropping the rebuild from the refresh reddens exactly that assertion, restores byte-exact (hash match); parallelMode/sticky-mode/webviewMessageHandler green; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: test-quality round from the review (head 4b28d3d)
The review round on the api-wiring unit named four test-quality issues; the ones present in this unit are fixed here: the viewStates describe block moved out of the alwaysDenyUnapprovedCommands block (test names carried the wrong subject), the prune test's toBeDefined() survival checks replaced with exact-shape toEqual assertions (they pass even if pruning strips fields), the stale-temporary-entry test's fixed 10 ms wait replaced with awaiting the load itself (the negative assertion could pass vacuously on a slow load), and the readiness-cancel test's fake timers restored in a finally block (a failed assertion left fake timers active and hung a later real-timer test).
Proofs: global-settings 9/9 where present, ClineProvider.spec green, sticky-mode green where present, api-task-control green where present; negative controls: pruning that strips updatedAt reddens exactly the prune test, a loadViewState that adopts the unowned temporary-id entry reddens exactly the stale-entry test, restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint --max-warnings=0 clean (src and types); prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Follow-up: review-round fixes from the series (head db6299d)
A review round on the mode-profile-writes unit found fixes this unit carries. When the view's durable mode pin write rejected inside the mode-switch handler, the task-history write and the in-memory task mode had already landed and the caller delivered the submitted message with the new task mode against the view's unchanged mode and mode-linked API configuration - the failure now restores the pre-switch task mode and history entry before rethrowing (new sticky-mode test; negative control: dropping the rollback reddens exactly that test).
A review round on the mode-profile-writes unit found that the profile-deletion re-pin updated each sibling view's buffer but not its running task: the posted state prefers the task's own apiConfiguration, so a conversation in a view pinned to the deleted profile kept sending the deleted profile's settings. The re-pin now rebuilds the sibling's API handler with the replacement's settings and re-points the task's sticky profile name, mirroring the activation path.
Proofs: ClineProvider.spec and sticky-mode green; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED. The rebuild's negative control (dropping it reddens exactly the sibling re-pin test, byte-exact restore) runs in the units that own that test.
Proofs: ClineProvider.spec 287/287, sticky-mode 34/34 (new pin-write-failure rollback test), parallel-mode 37/37 (sibling re-pin test asserts the task handler rebuild and sticky-name re-point); negative controls: dropping the rollback call reddens exactly the rollback test, dropping the rebuild reddens exactly the re-pin test, restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up, head 574dfeb)
Mode-switch atomicity: handleModeSwitchUnlocked now reconciles every write it owns (shared mode, durable view pin, task mode, task history) when a failure lands after the task-mode write - including the mode-linked profile activation - so submitUserMessage delivers the submitted message on the pre-switch mode and profile instead of a half-applied switch. Regression test fails the activation after the task-mode write and asserts all four stores are restored (negative control: reverting the reconcile reddens exactly that test).
Non-activating profile saves no longer force-rebuild the API handler of a view whose active task follows a different sticky profile (both rebuild sites guarded by taskApiConfigName); regression tests cover both sites.
Test hygiene: prune assertions compare full kept entries; the two re-key storage tests seed through the durable write path so their assertions can fail; sticky-mode afterEach disposes the per-test provider before resetting the instance registry; the webview state-payload test renamed to describe what it asserts.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 2, head 1849e73)
Deleted-profile re-pin: the forced task-handler rebuild and the sticky-name rewrite now require taskApiConfigName === deleted profile (the view-buffer re-pin stays unconditional), so a pinned view whose task follows another sticky profile keeps its conversation's settings and persisted profile name. Regression test included (negative control: removing the guard reddens exactly that test); the existing sibling re-pin test's task double now names the deleted profile as its sticky profile, matching what the test asserts.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 3, head c40a67a)
Mode-switch reconcile (this unit's thread): the rollback is skipped once the mode-linked activation has started writing shared state - a mode-only rollback would pair the old mode with the profile the activation switched to - and also when the mutation signal has aborted (the queue has advanced; a newer mutation may own the mode stores). The trailing state post now runs outside the reconciled region: a UI-refresh failure after a committed switch is logged, not rolled back. Three regression tests included (negative controls: removing either guard or re-throwing the post reddens exactly one test each).
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 4, head 8fbce54)
Mode-switch events now match the stores: ModeChanged is emitted only after the switch commits (a reconciled failure no longer leaves listeners on the rolled-back mode), and the rollback re-emits TaskModeSwitched with the restored mode for API/IPC consumers. The lock path no longer posts inside the reconciled region (it falls through to the committed-switch tail, where a post failure is logged). The mode-default recording reads the view's effective profile (getValues overlay) instead of the shared slot, so a sibling view's activation cannot become this mode's default. Three regression tests included (negative controls: each mutation reddens exactly its test).
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 5, head 3c454e5)
The committed-switch guard now flips only when the activation has actually written the activated profile (onSharedWriteStart callback), so a mode-linked activation whose own profile lookup fails (deleted profile) still reconciles the switch. The catch that keeps a switch (activation had written, no abort) now emits ModeChanged and posts state before rethrowing, so listeners and the webview learn the committed mode; the abort branch intentionally stays silent (a newer mutation may own the fields - documented in code). In-try abort checkpoints after the mode writes no longer return silently: they fall through to the emit/post tail so the committed mode reaches listeners and the webview. Three regression tests; negative controls: each mutation reddens exactly its test. The activation-failure test double now mirrors the onSharedWriteStart flip.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 6, head 47fc2ff)
Abort-silence rule settled: the emit/post tail announces a switch only while its committed mode is still current (after an abort, the tail checks the effective mode store; a superseded commit stays silent because the newer mutation already announced its own mode). This keeps both invariants: a committed switch is never left un-notified while it is current, and no stale announce clobbers a newer owner. Regression tests cover both branches (still-current -> emitted; superseded -> silent); negative controls: dropping the guard reddens the superseded test, always-silencing reddens the still-current test.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 7, head 612c6cc)
The lookup-failure regression test now exercises the REAL activateProviderProfileUnlocked (providerSettingsManager.activateProfile rejects) instead of a stub, so the production placement of the committed-switch flip (only after activateProfile resolves) is covered; a matching test keeps the switch when activateProfile resolves and a later shared write (setModeConfig) rejects. Negative controls: moving the flip above the activateProfile await reddens exactly the rollback test; removing it reddens exactly the kept-switch test.
Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 8, head 1106fcb)
The kept-switch regression test now also pins the task-side state on the committed mode: the task's in-memory mode stays architect and the last task-history write carries mode architect (a trailing rollback of the task-side writes after the committed-switch point would now be caught). Negative control: an extra history write with a different mode in the kept branch reddens exactly this test.
Per the AGENTS.md policy (never add Stryker directives; remove them when a file is touched), all // Stryker disable directives were dropped from this PR. Equivalence rationale for the removed suppressions:
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: defensive clobber guard, unreachable per the ordering argument above.
Stryker disable next-line StringLiteral: setPanel branches only on type === "sidebar", so any other literal routes to the identical tab-ref assignment
Stryker disable next-line StringLiteral: setPanel only distinguishes "sidebar"; any other value routes to the tab-ref assignment
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: at the catch, this call's own state-change handler only ever re-points the tracked ref at newPanel itself, so tabPanel === newPanel is the only reachable state here; a concurrent re-pointing race is not representable in this spec.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: only tool_use and mcp_tool_use entries ever carry an id — the text block pushed in the text case has no id field and the start events reaching this guard always carry the string id locked in by processRawChunk — so the type check cannot change the outcome of entry.id === event.id for any entry this pipeline produces; the false replacement is additionally killed by the rejection tests.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: event.name is always a string on this path — the only delta events reaching this handler are emitted by processRawChunk with the tracked start name (never undefined), so the legacy nameless branch below is unreachable defensive code and the conditional always takes the named side.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: streamingKey can never be undefined here — makeStreamingKey always returns a string and the legacy lookup branch above is unreachable (see the directive on the event.name check) — so the null side is unreachable defensive code.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression, EqualityOperator: streamingKey is always a defined string on this path (makeStreamingKey never returns undefined; the legacy branch is unreachable per the directives above), and processStreamingChunk returns a partial ToolUse for a known key, so both defensive conditions reduce to the partialToolUse check and cannot change the observed behavior.
Stryker disable next-line LogicalOperator: event.name is always a string on this path — finalizeRawChunks emits end events with the tracked start name (a string, set before the tracker can start), so the ?? event.id fallback guards a nameless end event this pipeline cannot produce.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression, LogicalOperator, EqualityOperator: the both-miss case is unreachable via the raw-chunk pipeline — end events carry the locked start name so the compound key resolves the registered entry, and a same-ID rejected-start end is always processed after the accepted start's end has already removed that entry; this defensive path protects against a cross-name end event the pipeline cannot produce.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: unreachable defensive region — getStreamingToolCallById can only resolve when the both-miss case above is reachable, which the raw-chunk pipeline cannot produce (see the directive there).
Stryker disable next-line CallExpression,ObjectLiteral: _updateViewLocalStateFromMutation applies only mode, currentApiConfigName, apiConfiguration and provider-settings keys, so a listApiConfigMeta-only payload (deleted call or empty object) is a behavior-preserving no-op.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: in this fallback the view does not pin the deleted profile, so when the deleted profile was not the shared selection profileToActivate equals the shared selection itself; forcing the branch only rewrites that same value back into the store.
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression,BlockStatement: hostile non-stabilizing encodings are unreachable from the webview (its posts are plain link targets); the bound is defensive
Stryker disable next-line CallExpression: hostile non-stabilizing encodings are pinned by the direct decodeUntrustedPathToStable bound test; the webview never posts such values
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression,OptionalChaining: equivalent mutant - when localStorage is unavailable the guard-false path and the throwing body both return this.fallbackState from this catch
Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression,OptionalChaining: equivalent mutant - when localStorage is unavailable the guard-false path and the throwing body both mark the write failed and return newState
CR round 2026-10-15 (b)
Ported the payload-customModes fix for setValues mode validation (identical flagged block; regression test added) so the units stay byte-identical at merge.
CR round 2026-10-15 (c)
Ported: the dispose() finally-path deregistration (identical flagged block; regression test added).
The createTask registration-failure rollback now restores the shared mode and the view's own mode pin independently (unset pin stays unset); divergent-pin regression test added. Same fix in all six units carrying the flagged block.
Activation writes from the stored record: upsertProviderProfile reads the saved profile back after saveConfig and feeds the normalized record to every post-save consumer (CR Security Boundaries).
Clear/re-point cache rollback: both durable viewStates writers restore the cache to the durable value when the write rejects, before rethrowing (CR Persistence Integrity).
Verification: new tests are focused negative controls (reverting each guard reddens exactly the matching test); ClineProvider.spec, webviewMessageHandler.spec spot-checks, api specs, spec-inclusive tsc --noEmit, eslint --max-warnings=0 (suppression counts unchanged) and prettier all green on this head.
Merged the current upstream/main (merge commit; the row-9 fix commit is unchanged and is the first parent) to clear the review gate's mergeability hold. Upstream refactored upsertProviderProfile into a new persistProviderProfile method and added a runToCompletion queue option; this unit's transactional body was ported into the new method unchanged and upstream's Promise.allSettled activation fix was adopted in it. ClineProvider.spec, webviewMessageHandler.spec, tsc --noEmit, eslint (suppression counts unchanged) and prettier re-verified green at this head. The first refreshed head's windows unit-test lane caught that upstream's new updateProfileModel tests in ClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild.spec.ts mock the settings manager with a static getProfile, which starves the post-save read-back; the mock now repoints getProfile at what saveConfig wrote (the real manager's behavior), and the file's 38 tests pass locally alongside the rest of the verification set.
registerCommands.ts:70 - overlapping openClineInNewTab calls now share one in-flight tab creation (the reuse path still runs first, and the promise is cleared in a finally). Test drives two overlapping calls through the real window and asserts one panel, one ClineProvider construction, and the same provider returned to both. Control: removing the in-flight branch reddens it with expected "vi.fn()" to be called 1 times, but got 2 times.
ClineProvider.ts:3527 - snapshotSiblingOverlaysBeforeSharedSettingsWrite fails the caller's shared write when a sibling pin cannot be read, and draws the same distinction as fix(core/webview): merge view-local state into getState for per-view overrides #1550: a ProviderSettingsNotFoundError (the pin names a deleted profile) is tolerated because this unit's deletion path re-points those views itself (rePinViewLocalStateForDeletedProfile at ClineProvider.ts:3825, repointPersistedViewStates at :835, called from deleteProviderProfile at :3372/:3408/:3469); any other read failure aborts. Pair control: removing the discrimination reddens "should still write the shared store when a sibling pins a deleted profile" (promise rejected ... instead of resolving), and removing the abort reddens "should abort the shared settings write when a sibling's pin cannot be resolved" (promise resolved "undefined" instead of rejecting). fix(webview): invalidate live sibling view state on reset and settings import (vps2 F4) #1562 and fix(core/webview): merge view-local state into getState for per-view overrides #1550 now behave identically here.
Test hygiene (test-only, no production behaviour depends on it): ClineProvider.sticky-profile.spec.ts now disposes the provider it creates in afterEach. It leaked one instance per test into the static registry carrying the profile pin that test had activated; a later test's fresh settings store cannot resolve that pin, so the new abort failed three unrelated tests. Teardown errors are swallowed there because dispose() deregisters in its finally even when that file's CloudService double has no off().
ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts's ProviderSettingsManager double now re-exports the real ProviderSettingsNotFoundError, since the production check is an instanceof and a doubled class would make the tolerated branch unreachable.

New Features
Editor tabs now have dedicated controls for creating tasks and opening settings, marketplace, and history.
View-specific mode and profile selections are saved and restored independently across webviews.
Bug Fixes
Commands and input focus now target the appropriate sidebar or editor tab.
Mode changes and profile updates handle failures more reliably, preserving existing settings when an update cannot be completed.
Imported and exported settings exclude view-specific state, keeping it local to each view.
The change adds persisted per-webview state and coordinates profile and settings updates across provider instances. It updates task mode switching and adds editor-tab-specific commands with tracked-panel lifecycle handling. Tests cover state persistence, profile changes, rollback paths, and command routing.
Changes: Per-view state and profile coordination
Layer / File(s)
Summary
View identity and state contract packages/types/src/*, webview-ui/src/utils/vscode.ts, webview-ui/src/context/ExtensionStateContext.tsx, related tests
Global settings include validated per-view state. Webview messages can carry a view ID. The browser wrapper validates and persists IDs and uses an in-memory fallback when storage reads or writes fail.
Shared profile coordination and settings portability src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts, src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts, src/core/config/importExport.ts, related tests
Provider settings add cross-instance serialization and a combined selection/mode-map read. Settings export and import omit non-portable view state. Successful imports can broadcast a reset before posting state.
View-local profile and mode lifecycle src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, related tests
Launch handling repairs invalid profile selections and continues after view-state registration errors. Profile save, rename, deletion, sign-out, view-state, and mode-switch paths gain corresponding updates and coverage.
Configuration save and rollback src/extension/api.ts, src/extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts, src/extension/__tests__/api-set-configuration.spec.ts
Configuration updates save profiles before applying settings and mode mappings. Failure handling restores records and shared state conditionally, based on snapshots and current stored values.
Editor-tab command routing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Tab command registration and dispatch packages/types/src/vscode.ts, src/package.json, src/activate/registerCommands.ts, related tests
Four tab-specific commands are registered for editor titles. Their handlers target the tracked tab provider, independently of the sidebar provider.
Panel creation and lifecycle src/activate/registerCommands.ts, src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts
Overlapping tab opens share creation work when the provider remains live. Panel disposal updates the tracked reference, and webview-resolution failures dispose the panel and provider while preserving the original error.
Task mode switching
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Task mode selection and delivery src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/tools/SwitchModeTool.ts, related tests
Task message submission waits for mode initialization and delegates mode changes to handleModeSwitch. The switch-mode tool passes its task explicitly and reports a released provider as a tool failure.

Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🟡 Moderate · up to c9b08
A failed or overlapping reset can leave an open tab using an outdated provider configuration after settings have changed. New tasks can read that configuration, although the observed scope is the local extension’s open views and task creation still checks the organization’s provider allow-list.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Reset and import do not consistently invalidate every live view: a rejected durable clear stops the sibling loop, and an in-flight state load can restore a selection read before a successful clear. A stale provider-configuration overlay can then remain authoritative for a subsequent task.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The invalidation boundary covers all live provider instances sharing this extension’s state, rather than an evidenced tenant or remote-service boundary. An affected sibling can retain its local provider overlay until another lifecycle action changes it.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — Following a user-initiated settings import, a failed clear—or a load that began before invalidation—can leave a sibling’s older API-configuration overlay in place. A later task in that view can consume it. No unauthenticated trigger, allow-list bypass, or cross-tenant exposure was established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Import sanitizes shared settings and excludes imported view selections; view-state loading checks that modes resolve and attempts to resolve pinned profiles. New task creation applies an organization provider allow-list check.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Logging and continuing after a broadcast failure preserves the completed import, but leaves no demonstrated retry or recovery step that reconciles sibling buffers with the imported settings.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Give invalidation a generation marker checked by in-flight loads, and provide a reconciliation path when the durable clear fails, so import success cannot silently leave live views on pre-import provider settings.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the primary change: invalidating live sibling view state on reset and settings import. The changeset adds broadcastResetToAllInstances, clears in-memory view-local state across live instances, and calls the broadcast from importSettingsWithFeedback, which matches the title. The title also includes a ticket tag '(vps2 F4)' that is internal series shorthand, but the core subject is accurate. At 87 characters it is slightly long, but it stays within a single, specific sentence.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The prior security concern remains. webviewMessageHandler.ts:603 accepts a renderer-supplied ID, and ClineProvider.ts:1002-1018 checks it only against live providers. Disposal removes the provider from that registry while retaining its persisted entry (ClineProvider.ts:1574; ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts:816-836). A different webview that knows the disposed view's ID can claim it. loadViewState then loads the pinned profile from secret storage, and the launch state post can send its credentials to that webview when no task is active (ClineProvider.ts:1086-1093, 4656-4660, 4990, 5245-5254). These identity and profile-loading paths are introduced by the PR.
Resolution
Bind persisted entries to a host-validated view identity or capability, or retire them on disposal. Add a regression test for a different webview submitting a disposed view's ID. Redact credentials from posted state where possible.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
Direct profile activation can leave persisted selections inconsistent. ProviderSettingsManager.activateProfile stores the new selection before ClineProvider.ts:3987-4010 starts the changed writes. If the new view-state write fails, setValue restores the shared profile name, but the manager selection and provider settings can remain on the new profile. Promise.all can reject before the other writes finish. The loadApiConfiguration handler only reports the error.
Resolution
Make direct activation atomic, or reconcile all affected stores after failure. Wait for every started write before compensation and protect newer changes. Add a direct activation test that fails the view-state write and checks the manager selection, shared settings and metadata, mode mapping, view state, and sibling overlays.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the 'what' and 'how' in detail, including the broadcast flow, import behavior, tests run, and verification numbers. It fails to follow the required template in several ways: the 'Related GitHub Issue' section does not contain a 'Closes: #' line linked to an approved issue (it cites a fork issue 41 and an upstream issue #1561 instead, with the note that the PR is a draft), the 'Test Procedure' is given as commands, the Pre-Submission Checklist is not marked, and the Documentation Updates section is absent. It also uses many long, non-STE sentences and includes a long run of follow-up sections that make the description hard to scan. The content is substantive, but the template is not followed closely enough to be called mostly complete.
Resolution
Add a 'Closes: #<issue>' line that links to an approved GitHub issue, since the template requires one. Restate the 'Test Procedure' section in the template's form, and tick or address each Pre-Submission Checklist item. Add the 'Documentation Updates' answer. Shorten the description and rewrite it in short, active sentences per the template's Simplified Technical English guidance. Move the long follow-up round history out of the description, or keep it in a separate comment.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The prior coverage gaps remain in the changed browser-storage fallback. vscode.spec.ts does not test an own randomUUID: undefined property. Its malformed-JSON test reads before memory is seeded; after the failed write, getState() bypasses JSON parsing (vscode.ts:116-128).
Resolution
Add a deterministic ID fallback test with an own randomUUID: undefined property. Add a malformed-JSON test that seeds memory with a successful write and verifies that parsing failure returns that state. Retain the failed-write stale-storage test.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The disposal race remains. The new launch path awaits setViewStateId() without checking disposal before it starts the workspace scan (webviewMessageHandler.ts:596–617). If disposal waits for task cleanup, the scan can start after disposal begins and overlap a replacement view's scan. WorkspaceTracker.initializeFilePaths() can then schedule a timer after tracker disposal (WorkspaceTracker.ts:27–38, 118–134, 167–177). The new loadViewState() also applies a completed profile read without checking disposal (ClineProvider.ts:1089–1101, 1182).
Resolution
Invalidate pending view-state loads when disposal starts. Stop launch initialization after disposal. Prevent in-flight workspace scans from scheduling work after tracker disposal. Add regression tests for both disposal races.

… mocks
API.setConfiguration now routes through ClineProvider.setValues
(8576b18 "fix(api): route setConfiguration through
ClineProvider.setValues"), but the pre-existing spec still shaped the
provider mock around the old contextProxy.setValues call. Both tests in
this file failed with "this.sidebarProvider.setValues is not a
function" on the platform-unit-test runs (F3 Zoo-Code-Org#1560 windows unit,
job 101863508169, run 34161293841). Add the provider-level setValues
mock to both tests to match the new routing.
Upstream: Zoo-Code-Org#1560 (vps2 F3)
The F1a buffer routing and the new delete-time activation branch interacted in two ways: the unrelated-pin branch re-wrote currentApiConfigName through setValue although the view-local buffer already holds the surviving pin (drop the write: it only triggered a viewStates prune pass and could clobber the pin with the shared slot value), and deleting the current profile now activates the fallback, which reads its settings via providerSettingsManager, so the spec test uses a test double like its siblings in the describe.
…s import
- ClineProvider: new broadcastResetToAllInstances() clears each live instance's
view-local cache and issues the single global contextProxy setValue("viewStates", undefined)
write (single write-queue clear; no secrets involved, no prune-cap regression).
- resetState: awaits broadcastResetToAllInstances() before the final postStateToWebview
so parallel tabs do not keep stale durable/in-memory per-view state.
- importExport: ImportWithProviderOptions.provider gains optional
broadcastResetToAllInstances?(); importSettingsWithFeedback calls it in a guarded
try/catch (log-only) after a successful import, so a failing broadcast never fails the import.
- importExport spec: 3 new tests (broadcast called when available / skipped when missing /
import result preserved when broadcast throws, console.warn asserted; the skip test also
asserts the broadcast-failure warn is NOT reached). Provider identifiers use
providerIdentifiers.* per the zoo/no-raw-provider-identifiers rule (lint-required
adaptation from Zoo-Code-Org#981's raw-string casts; no semantic change).
- parallelMode spec: appends the CS source-of-record describes (multi-instance isolation,
_clearViewLocalState) — 5 new tests.
- ClineProvider spec: forward fix of the F3 resetState sentinel (F4's global viewStates
clear removes the key; the F3-era toEqual({}) expectation is replaced by toBeUndefined())
plus a new cross-instance resetState test pinning the multi-instance broadcast path
(sibling view-local cache cleared; sibling and caller each post state exactly once).
- webviewMessageHandler.ts was NOT edited: the importSettings case already passes the full
ClineProvider, which structurally satisfies the extended provider type and reaches the real
broadcast method — Zoo-Code-Org#981's structural wrapper hunk is redundant in this stack.

`Closes: #<issue-number>`, complete the Pre-Submission Checklist, and confirm
the applicable documentation, contribution, and testing items. Keep the existing
implementation details under Description and the test commands under Test
Procedure; mark non-applicable sections explicitly where needed.
- Regression Evidence:
Add a browser-wrapper test with `globalThis.crypto` set to `{ randomUUID:
undefined }` and assert the deterministic timestamp-random ID. Change the
malformed `vscodeState` test to seed a non-undefined in-memory state before the
malformed read, then assert `getState()` returns that state without throwing and
does not re-read stale storage.
- Security Boundaries:
Bind each persisted view-state record to an extension-owned panel/webview
identity, or require a host-validated unforgeable capability before
reassociation. Do not authorize a renderer-supplied ID after its provider is
disposed. If secure reassociation is unavailable, clear or retire the durable
record during disposal. Add a regression test that disposes provider A, submits
A's ID through provider B, and verifies that no credential-bearing
`apiConfiguration` is loaded or posted. Redact credential fields before posting
state where possible.
- Persistence Integrity:
Make `activateProviderProfileUnlocked` transactional. Snapshot the manager
selection/profile, list metadata, shared provider settings, mode mapping,
durable and in-memory view state, and sibling overlays before activation. Await
all started writes with `Promise.allSettled`; on failure, compensate every write
that landed, restore durable and in-memory view state, and rethrow the original
error. Add a direct activation test that rejects the `viewStates` write after
`activateProfile` and verifies every persistence surface remains unchanged.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Add a lifecycle generation or cancellation guard for `loadViewState()`. Check
the guard after each awaited custom-mode or profile read and immediately before
assigning `viewLocalState`. Make `setViewStateId()` stop or ignore delivery when
disposal starts. Add a regression test that defers `getProfile()`, starts
view-state registration, disposes the provider, resolves the profile, and
verifies that no state is applied after disposal.

749-757: Data Integrity & Integration
The restore guard compares the stored record with the unfiltered payload. The restore branch does not run for ordinary payloads.
The open follow-up on the earlier thread still applies at this revision. Line 751 compares currentSettings with values:
currentSettings is the stored profile record without name and id. saveConfig normalizes and schema-filters the payload before it stores the record, so the record holds only provider-settings keys.
values is the full RooCodeSettings payload. It almost always contains non-profile keys, such as currentApiConfigName and modeApiConfigs.
When the payload contains any non-profile key, deepEqual returns false, even if no other view wrote the record. The compensation then logs "another view wrote it after this call saved" and returns. Here is the result: a later setValues or setModeConfig failure leaves the existing profile overwritten with this call's settings and secrets. The function docstring says the prior record is restored.
The test suite does not catch this. makeProfileStoreDouble stores the payload unchanged, so the test "restores the previous record when rolling back a save over an existing profile" passes.
Make these changes:
Capture the normalized record while the first critical section still holds the lock. Call getProfile right after saveConfig, then remove name and id.
In the restore branch, compare the current record with that captured record.
Make the store double filter the payload to provider-settings keys, as production does.
Keep two tests. In the first, no other view writes the record, and rollback restores the old apiKey. In the second, another view rewrites the record, and rollback keeps the newer record.
🐛 Proposed fix
const id = await manager.saveConfig(savedProfileName, values)
- return { recordExisted: existed, previousRecord: priorRecord, savedId: id }+ // The normalized record this call stored, so the compensation compares like with like.+ const { name: _writtenName, id: _writtenId, ...writtenSettings } = await manager.getProfile({+ name: savedProfileName,+ })+ return { recordExisted: existed, previousRecord: priorRecord, savedId: id, writtenSettings }
})
- if (!deepEqual(currentSettings, values)) {+ if (!deepEqual(currentSettings, writtenSettings)) {
The merge 152e5e1 resolved ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts to the 17890eb
copy and dropped the cf80e4b copy, which carried the case that a pin this view
cannot read leaves the sibling buffer untouched and is reported. Back from the
survivor sweep (Zoo-Code-Org#1562 row), not written fresh.
The await is wrapped in rejects.toThrow because this chain refuses the shared
write while a pin cannot be resolved; the case landed while the miss was only
logged. The two assertions below that are the original ones. Checked by hand
against the pre-fix sibling snapshot: the case goes red on the rejection and on
the log line, so it pins the contract this chain has.
saveConfig normalizes before it stores: it drops the keys the profile schema does
not know - the mode and profile-pin keys a settings round trip carries - and it
keeps the id of the record it overwrote. The rollback in setConfiguration compared
the re-read record with the caller payload, so a payload carrying any non-profile
key made an untouched record look like another view write and the failed call left
its own profile in storage. It now captures the record the save produced inside
the same critical section, and both rollback branches compare against that
snapshot: before replaying the pre-call settings, and before deleting, so a writer
that saved over the name this call created keeps its record instead of losing its
secrets. The log names the differing keys, never their values.
api-configuration.spec.ts stored the raw payload in its manager double, which is
what hid the mismatch. With the double stripping the keys the schema drops, the
existing roll-back-over-an-existing-profile case already fails against the parent
api.ts, and two new cases cover the update branch and the create branch. Against
the parent those three go red - delete called on a foreign record, the failed
call profile left in storage, previous settings never replayed - and against this
commit all 25 pass.

One merge commit on top of the pre-merge parent 0625de6. The
parent sha was read from git ls-remote refs/heads/main on the upstream remote at merge time; the
fork's own main (9b6d742) is four weeks stale, an ancestor of
73931fe, and was not used.
The merge auto-resolved 105 paths with no conflicts. Both sides edited src/extension/api.ts:
upstream added the TaskMessagesReadError, getErrorCode and tracePersistenceEvent imports at :38
and rewired the hasTextMarker message read at :371-390 to emit persistence trace events, while
this branch owns the differingProfileKeys helper above the class declaration and the rollback
comparison inside setConfiguration after :700. The two regions do not overlap, so the merge kept
both rather than preferring either side.
src/eslint-suppressions.json merged to 265 entries / 2853 suppressed findings, which is not above
either parent (3284 here before the merge, 2870 on upstream): upstream retired entries for files
it deleted and the reductions made on this branch stayed.
Survivor check over the 55 spec paths either side touched (union of the two parent diffs from the
merge base e943530): no test title is absent from the merged tree relative to either parent, no
path present at either parent is missing, and the per-file title totals are exactly additive
(1253 at the merge base, 1296 upstream, 1539 here, 1582 merged).
Verified on the merged tree before committing: src tsc --noEmit, webview-ui check-types and lint,
apps/vscode-e2e lint and check-types, eslint --max-warnings=0 --no-warn-ignored over the 52
changed lintable src files, prettier --check over all 105 merged paths, and the eight suites that
cover the auto-merged and branch-owned specs (ClineProvider.spec, Task.spec, api-configuration,
api-set-configuration, api-has-task-ui-message-text, ClineProvider.parallelMode,
ProviderSettingsManager.spec, ContextProxy.spec) - 8 files, 893 tests, all passing.

verify that fallback rather than "bogus-provider".
Review comments at @src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:
- Line 5762: Update the reset flow around resetAllConfigs() and
broadcastResetToAllInstances() so a rejection from resetAllConfigs() still
invalidates live buffers and refreshes views. Preserve and propagate the
original reset error after performing that failure-path cleanup.
- Around line 5503-5504: Update ClineProvider.getValues so the public
configuration excludes credentials nested in apiConfiguration when a profile
overlay is active, without mutating viewLocalState or the live overlay. Keep the
internal rollback snapshot intact, and add a regression test that verifies the
public getter filters the credentials while preserving the overlay and snapshot.
- Around line 5521-5523: Update the setConfiguration flow that merges
getCustomModes() with sanitizedValues.customModes so any newly supplied selected
mode is registered before its slug is persisted. Use the existing registration
mechanism, and handle registration failures without persisting a selection whose
definition was not registered.
- Line 5248: Update the pinned-profile configuration so a missing apiProvider
defaults to the established Anthropic provider identifier instead of inheriting
providerSettings.apiProvider; preserve an explicitly configured
viewApiConfiguration.apiProvider.
- Around line 5676-5679: Coordinate pending profile and mode mutations with the
reset in ClineProvider.persistedViewStateWriteQueue so no stale mutation can run
after the durable “viewStates” clear and restore an old selection. Ensure the
shared reset waits for or invalidates queued mutations, then performs the clear
as the final durable write.
- Around line 6341-6348: Update the rollback in createTask so a failed
custom-mode registration restores the previous shared and view-local modes only
if those values are still owned by this call; otherwise preserve the newer mode
selection. Alternatively, serialize the competing mode mutations so rollback
cannot overwrite a completed switch.
- Line 5168: Update the state-posting flow around getState and mergedStateValues
to read the profile name and settings from the same generation, then ensure a
post from an older generation cannot overwrite state from a newer post. Preserve
the existing state merge behavior for other values.
- Line 5448: Update updateSettings to apply the existing sibling-overlay
protection used by setValues before writing a provider key through
contextProxy.setValue. Preserve the single-key write while ensuring sibling
profiles cannot observe a mixed configuration.
- Line 5504: Update getConfiguration in ClineProvider to return settings
consistent with the pinned profile name, using that profile’s effective
view-specific configuration rather than unrelated shared flat settings. Ensure
saving and reloading this result preserves the pinned profile and its overlay
without overwriting it with another profile’s settings.
- Around line 1627-1633: Update the task cleanup loop around evictCurrentTask,
removeClineFromStack, and drainTaskDisposal so a throwing TaskUnfocused listener
cannot skip aborting and draining the current task or prevent processing
remaining tasks. Ensure all tasks are drained before provider dependencies are
released, while preserving appropriate error propagation after cleanup
completes.
- Around line 514-515: Update the profile mutation flow in ClineProvider that
uses currentApiConfigName so snapshot coordination cannot create reciprocal
waits between provider queues: do not hold one provider’s mutation queue while
awaiting snapshot work queued behind another provider’s mutation. Ensure an
activating upsert both saves the profile and completes its activation,
preserving activation semantics when pinned views without overlays switch
profiles concurrently.
- Around line 5697-5708: Update the reset loop around _clearViewLocalState and
postStateToWebview to clear every instance’s live state before awaiting any
sibling state post. Then post state to siblings only, preserving the existing
exclusion of this and the existing failure handling so a stalled or failing post
cannot leave later buffers uncleared.
- Line 5547: Update the setConfiguration flow around setValues so the
credential-bearing apiConfiguration overlay returned by getConfiguration is
excluded from globalState writes. Preserve writes for other sanitized values and
keep credentials in the existing secret-storage path.
Review comments at @src/extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts:
- Around line 38-45: Update the rollback test’s saveConfig double so it no
longer reimplements profile filtering with profileRecordKeys and
Object.fromEntries. Exercise the real profile manager using fake storage and
assert the normalized record, including the expected removal of OpenRouter’s
apiKey.
Review comments at @src/extension/api.ts:
- Around line 866-869: Update the rollback in setConfiguration to coordinate
with competing mode-mapping writes: restore the previousSharedMode mapping only
if this call changed it and it still matches the value written by this call.
Preserve any newer mapping written by another view, and continue restoring the
previous shared profile name as appropriate.
- Around line 653-668: Update the configuration failure documentation in the API
comment to reflect that the profile is saved before settings, settings failures
trigger best-effort rollback, and a read-back failure after the save bypasses
rollback. Clarify that reported committed keys do not necessarily represent the
final state.
- Around line 757-760: Update the values passed to
this.sidebarProvider.setValues so sibling views receive the normalized saved
profile settings rather than the unnormalized forwardValues payload. Include
removed fields in that update so legacy provider selections do not remain in
sibling overlays; preserve the existing savedProfileName handling.
- Around line 883-886: Update the rollback refresh through
refreshViewLocalStateForUpdatedProfile to use settings from the retained profile
record when another view has successfully saved that profile, rather than stale
previousSettings. Preserve the existing rollback behavior when no newer retained
record exists.
Review comments at @webview-ui/src/utils/vscode.ts:
- Line 79: Update the flow that returns normalizedViewStateId to retain the
successfully read view-state ID for use if a later browser-storage read fails,
so the fallback reuses the same ID instead of generating a new one. Add a test
that verifies this behavior across a successful read followed by an
unreadable-storage failure.
---
Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add a deterministic fallback-ID test with an own `randomUUID: undefined`
property. Seed in-memory state with a successful write, then return malformed
JSON and assert that `getState()` returns the seeded state. Retain the
failed-write stale-storage coverage.
- Security Boundaries:
Bind each persisted record to a host-validated view identity or capability, or
retire it on disposal. Add a regression test for B submitting A's ID after A is
disposed. Redact credentials from posted state where possible.
- Persistence Integrity:
Make activation atomic or reconcile all affected stores on failure. Await all
started writes before compensation. Restore the manager selection, shared
settings and metadata, mode mapping, view state, and sibling overlays without
overwriting newer changes. Add a direct activation test that rejects the
view-state write and checks each persistence surface.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Invalidate in-flight view-state loads when disposal starts. Check the lifecycle
after awaited reads and before applying state. Stop launch initialization when
disposal starts. Add a regression test that disposes the provider during a
deferred profile read and verifies that state application and launch
initialization stop.

## ESLint Suppressions
### Typed test files
New or substantially changed test files must not add `typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any` suppression entries to `src/eslint-suppressions.json`:
- Prefer typed structural doubles: type mock context/proxy classes against the real public types they stand in for (e.g. `vscode.ExtensionContext`), and use `unknown` for storage values and mock callback parameters instead of `any`.
- Access private members with bracket notation (`provider["view"]`) and call public members without casts so their generic signatures keep checking arguments.
- When a partial double cannot be assigned to the real type, cast it once at the construction site (`as unknown as T`) with a comment naming the members the double provides; do not repeat `as any` at every use site.
- Validate with `pnpm --dir src run check-types`, the narrowest affected Vitest suite, and `pnpm --dir src exec eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 <relative-test-...

Coordinate MCP registration with provider disposal.
If tab initialization fails while MCP initialization is pending, the provider can finish cleanup before registerClient() runs. The late registration has no matching unregister, leaving the hub’s client count incorrect and potentially retaining MCP resources. …ve fails
CodeRabbit found (thread PRRT_kwDOSK-bwM606MJS) that the confirmation read inside the save
section sat outside every try: if getProfile rejected after saveConfig had already stored the
record, the section rejected and no compensation ran, leaving the stored profile holding this
call payload while the shared settings and the mode mappings never moved.
The read is wrapped now. On failure the compensation runs while the section is still held and
the read error is rethrown: the prior record is written back when the name already existed,
and when this call created the name the record is deleted only after a fresh read shows it
still carries the id this call received and none of the settings the payload supplied changed.
A matching id is not proof of ownership - saveConfig keeps the id of the record it overwrote,
so a writer that saved over the name inherits it - and a record that cannot be read at all is
kept rather than deleted on a guess, which is the rule the existence read above the section
already follows.
Also adopts the shared NON_PORTABLE_SETTINGS_KEYS filter in the settings import path (thread
PRRT_kwDOSK-bwM606MJO), so a key added to that list is skipped on import without a second
edit, and corrects the API, import-path and test comments that claimed the export schema
consults the same list: the export schema omits viewStates in its own omit list.
Tests: four cases in api-configuration.spec.ts in which getProfile rejects on the read after
the save - prior record restored, created record deleted, foreign content under the inherited
id kept, unreadable record kept - each asserted through captured arguments rather than matcher
shape. Against the head before this commit those four are red (4 failed | 25 passed); with the
fix the file is 29 passed. core/config/__tests__/importExport.spec.ts and
ContextProxy.spec.ts: 123 passed.
Gates: src tsc -p tsconfig.json --noEmit 0, eslint --max-warnings=0 --no-warn-ignored over the
four touched files 0, prettier --check 0. src/eslint-suppressions.json is untouched: a prune
run rewrote only its formatting, and all 265 entries and the 2853 total are unchanged, so the
file was restored from HEAD.
Answering both rows on this PR. The fix is in be012f65f9dfc3f2007b420b34d73200d105f377 (pushed).
api.ts:747 — implemented. The read-back now sits in its own try, and on failure the compensation runs inside the same runExclusiveAcrossInstances section before the read error is rethrown:
name already existed: saveConfig(savedProfileName, previousSettings) writes the prior record back under the id it already had;
name was created by this call: the record is deleted only after a fresh read shows it still carries the id saveConfig returned and none of the settings keys this payload supplied changed. A matching id is treated as necessary but not sufficient — saveConfig keeps the id of the record it overwrote, so a writer that saved over this name inherits this call id and only content shows it;
if that fresh read fails too, the record is kept rather than deleted: the id cannot prove ownership and this call has no snapshot to compare against, which is the same never-delete-blindly rule the existence read above the section already follows (catch { existed = true });
the read error is rethrown unchanged, so the caller still sees the storage failure, and nothing after the section (shared settings, sibling overlays, mode mappings, refresh) runs.
Four cases in src/extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts cover it, each driving getProfile to reject on the read after the save: prior record restored, created record deleted, foreign content under the inherited id kept (the log line names the differing key, apiKey, not the secret value), and an unreadable record kept. Store state is asserted on the map and the compensation is asserted through captured argument lists (saveConfig.mock.calls.at(-1), deleteConfig.mock.calls) rather than matcher shape, because toHaveBeenCalledWith compares the way toEqual does and ignores undefined-valued keys.
Negative control: with the tests added on top of 0f5245802d8ecaa494a7849144017f3151843a12 and the old api.ts, the four new cases are red (4 failed | 25 passed). With the fix the file is 29 passed. core/config/__tests__/importExport.spec.ts and core/config/__tests__/ContextProxy.spec.ts together: 123 passed. srctsc --noEmit exit 0, eslint --max-warnings=0 --no-warn-ignored over the four touched files exit 0 (the pre-commit hook ran that same command and completed), prettier --check exit 0, and src/eslint-suppressions.json is unchanged at 265 entries / 2853 suppressed.
ContextProxy.ts:83 — adopted.importExport.ts imports isNonPortableSettingsKey and the skip now reads if (isNonPortableSettingsKey(key)) instead of key === "viewStates", so a key added to NON_PORTABLE_SETTINGS_KEYS is skipped on import without a second edit. The import-side set is the same single key today, so behaviour is unchanged. The export schema is still a literal globalSettingsSchema.omit({ ..., viewStates: true }) and does not follow the list, so the comments at the list definition, in api.ts and in the spec now say that outright instead of implying one list drives all three paths.

The compensation that runs when the read-back after a profile save fails
decided ownership two ways that could not see another writer: it restored
the prior record without looking at what the record holds now, and it
judged the created record against the caller payload rather than against
what saveConfig actually stores.
The ownership test now compares the record against the payload passed
through the same normalization saveConfig applies - the legacy router
downgrade and the profile schema parse - so schema defaults the record
legitimately carries and the mode and profile-pin keys the record
legitimately drops are both handled, and a record that differs from that
expectation in either direction - a changed key, a deleted key, or a key
this call never mentioned - counts as another write and is kept. Keeping
it leaves the other writer content in place rather than restoring ours,
which is the conservative direction.
The restore of a prior record is now a compare-and-swap on the same
test: it re-reads first, and skips when the record moved in a way this
call cannot attribute to its own save, reporting the skip rather than
clobbering the newer content. A payload that cannot be normalized leaves
ownership unprovable, and both paths keep the record.
The save itself receives the filtered payload: the host-owned keys a
caller may carry are not profile content, and a retired profile keeps no
stale mode map behind. Serialising the two writers is the structural
answer and is not taken here; this change makes the compensation safe
without it.
Tests: another writer deleting a key this call wrote, adding a key it
never mentioned, matching the settings under a different id, and a
settings write landing before a restore. The first, second and fourth
fail against the pre-fix head as a negative control.
webview-visual is red here for the same reason it was red on #1930 an hour ago, and I can now say that from a workflow-wide timeline rather than from one PR's log.
I pulled every run of the Visual Regression workflow in the last ~2.5 hours (workflow id 290993158, 50 runs, 49 completed). The webview leg produced two test failures in the whole window, both carrying a byte-identical signature, interleaved with successes on unrelated branches:
The two failures are the same assertion in the same case with the same numbers:
Error: high-contrast-light welcome action boundary: 2.34:1 (required 3:1; foreground rgba(34, 88, 142, 0.494); background rgba(255, 255, 255, 1.00)) [chromium] › src/components/welcome/__tests__/WelcomeViewProvider.visual.tsx:8:2 › renders the full welcome screen in the VS Code high-contrast-light theme — the 96th case in both logs.
Why that rules out both branches.#1562's diff is two files under src/extension; #1930's is 13 files under src/, its head commit test-only; neither touches a webview-ui contrast path. The same branch passed this leg 19 minutes before failing and the same leg passed on three other branches in between, including on the branch that failed 18 minutes later. And each failing job's own parent head passed the same leg — be012f65f at 20:42Z for this PR, b7e3d8128 at 21:20Z for #1930 — so under our own rule (a red is pre-existing only if it reproduces on the parent) I will not call it pre-existing either: it is nondeterministic, at roughly two in forty-five completed legs, always the same case, always the same numbers.
What I am not claiming. I have not separated a browser/runner drift from a slow-theme-transition race — the failing case runs in ~1.3 s against 2–5 s for its neighbours, and an alpha of 0.494 on a link colour is a partially composited state, so the race reading is available to me but not measured. What is measured is that no commit on either branch can be the cause.
The ask, and it is admin-only. Please re-run the failed legs: job 128541029983 here and job 128536727927 on #1930. One re-run each answers flaky-versus-regression. The author token cannot start either: POST …/actions/runs/<id>/rerun-failed-jobs returns 403 Must have admin rights to Repository. We are not patching contrast code we did not touch.
Two reading notes for whoever triages this job. Run-level conclusions mislead: three of the six non-success runs in the window were cancellations from superseding pushes, and one (vps2/n4-values-reset at 19:56Z) has a successful webview leg with a non-success run conclusion from a sibling job. And this workflow only fires on pull_request, so main's own head has no run of it at all — there is no merged-main baseline to compare against, which is why cross-branch interleaving is the only evidence available. Update, 22:28Z, and it strengthens the above. The successor head on this same branch, 82f44f854, pushed 31 minutes after the failing leg, ran the same webview-visual job and passed it — job 128547683529, completed/success. The failing head 39a38b21a and its successor differ by one commit touching src/extension/api.ts, src/extension/services/ClineProvider.ts and their specs; nothing in webview-ui. So the leg is now red at one head and green at its immediate successor, on top of the interleaving above.
Practical version of the ask. If re-running job 128541029983 is expensive or the workflow cannot be re-run on a superseded head, marking that check as it now reads on 82f44f854 achieves the same thing. What we do not want is a permanently red advisory badge on a branch whose current head passes the identical job.
…urface
getValues() is the public view of settings: an API client reads it through
getConfiguration and can hand the same object straight back to
setConfiguration. It merged the view-local overlay whole, so a credential
bearing profile reached the caller inside apiConfiguration, and a payload
then wrote that object into ordinary global state through
contextProxy.setValues. The public getter now reports the overlay without
its secret keys, and the shared write drops the overlay: its place is the
per-view record and secret storage. The buffer is never mutated, so the
view still serves its own profile.
broadcastResetToAllInstances cleared each buffer inside the same loop that
awaited sibling posts, so a stalled post left the views after it serving
selections the reset had already thrown away; the clears now run first.
resetState skipped the broadcast when a later reset step rejected after the
shared reset had already landed, leaving live views holding the discarded
modes, profiles and credentials; they are invalidated and refreshed on that
path, and the original failure is what the caller sees.

Assert that compensation does not save the replacement.
Both tests return a replacement without storing it. They can pass if compensation logs the keep decision but saves the original settings again. Seed each replacement in the store, assert its full record, and verify that saveConfig was called only for the initial save.

Update both compensation tests around the replacement-returning mock to seed the

Right about the substance, and I did not strengthen those two cases the way the row phrases it, for a reason worth recording: in both of them the read-back is an overriding getProfile double, not the store double, so the replacement never lives in store.entries. Seeding the store and asserting it would assert the double's own bookkeeping rather than the compensation. What I did instead: the new case at api-configuration.spec.ts:733 seeds the store double (makeProfileStoreDouble) for the snapshot this call takes before it writes, and asserts the compensation's own behaviour directly - saveConfig called once (the initial write; a restore or a save-back would be a second call), deleteConfig never called, and the log naming both ids. That is the assertion the row wants, at the layer where a save-back would actually show.
The re-plumbing the row implies - making the record read come from store.entries in those two cases so the seeded replacement is the source of truth - is a harness change I will do in the next push, and I would rather say that than claim it here.
Resolution note: answer posted, thread left unresolved until the harness change lands.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@easonLiangWorldedtech Thanks for the clarification. The new test checks that compensation makes no extra save or delete in the different-ID case. The replacement returned by getProfile is not in store.entries, so a store assertion alone would not verify its preservation.
I’ll keep this thread open for the planned harness update.

Right, and I am not adding it in this push. Two things I want on the record so this is not read as a no: (1) the read-back failure path for a retired provider is now doubly covered at the normalization layer - a retired provider map is normalized away before the record is compared, and the compensation compares whole records rather than payload keys, which is what made a retired-provider passthrough case worth having in the first place; (2) the case the row asks for needs a RetiredProviderName literal in the payload plus a field the profile schema passes through but does not store, and I would rather look the identifier up than guess it in the same push that changed the compensation. It is queued for the next push with the other test-only rows.

Not fixed here, and the row is right about the reason. What I measured: runExclusiveAcrossInstances (ProviderSettingsManager.ts:129) is the only section entry point - listConfig (:440), saveConfig (:462), getProfile (:489) and deleteConfig (:551) are plain methods that take the inner per-instance lock. My compensation runs its re-read and its deleteConfig inside one held section, so nothing that also takes the section can interleave between them. An import path that writes the same name without taking the section can, and that is the window this row names. Closing it means the import side joins the same section, which is a manager-level change rather than a hunk in setConfiguration, so I am naming it instead of shipping it from this PR unilaterally.
What landed in the meantime narrows the same family on the restore half: identical settings under a different id is now kept rather than restored (api.ts:810, see my reply on the api.ts:816 row). The delete half keeps its ownership check - it deletes only a record whose whole settings match what this call wrote, and it retains on any key difference, on a record it cannot normalize, or on an id that is not this call's.
Mutation-diff at this head: the job concluded failure with: Mutation gate failed: extension has 2128 changed executable lines (limit 500). Split the PR or obtain a maintainer-reviewed narrow exclusion.. That is the changed-executable-lines cap thrown in buildManifest (statement 1 of the four): no mutant list is drawn and DryRunExecutor appears 0 times in the log, so it makes no claim about survivors. What the log does print, with its basis: package line counts - ; single-mutant survivor advisories for the mutated extension package: 0; for other packages: 1 (["# ::warning file=packages/core/src/value.ts,line=1,title=Mutatio"]); Stryker preflight aborts printed: 1. The line count moves with the executable lines a fix adds, so a bigger number here is this fix rather than the code getting worse.
Resolution note: answer posted, thread left unresolved because the serialization ask is not done.

@easonLiangWorldedtech Thanks for the details. The ownership check does not close the race if an import writes after the compensation read. I understand that the serialization change is not being made in this PR, so this thread remains open.
Would you like a follow-up GitHub issue for the serialization change and a regression test?
The reported mutation gate stopped at the changed-line cap; it does not establish an extension mutant survivor count. A PR split or maintainer-reviewed narrow exclusion remains necessary to address that gate.
The last saved pre-merge assessment also blocks on security boundaries and persistence integrity. Its freshness is unverified, so please recheck those error gates at the current head before merging.

setConfiguration propagated the payload to the provider for the sibling
profile refresh, but saveConfig normalizes before it stores: the profile
schema drops the keys it does not know and can rewrite a legacy provider on
the way in. An idle sibling rebuilds its overlay from the settings the
caller reports, so it could keep selecting a provider the saved record no
longer holds and fail to create a task with it. setValues now accepts the
record that landed (savedProfileSettings) and refreshes pinned siblings
from it, keeping the payload-derived subset as the fallback for callers
that save through setValues without reporting the stored record.
The compensation restore is now compare-and-swap on the record id as well
as on its settings. saveConfig keeps an existing id when it overwrites, so
identical settings under a different id can only come from a writer that
replaced the record; the prior record is kept rather than restored over
that writer, which is the conservative direction for an import that
replaced the profile in place.

Restore the originating view’s complete overlay on rollback.
If setConfiguration receives an apiConfiguration overlay without flat provider keys and a mode-mapping write fails, rollback replaces the originating view’s overlay with the redacted snapshot. New tasks can then fail authentication. Capture and restore the complete overlay separately from the public settings snapshot.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add a deterministic ID fallback test with an own `randomUUID: undefined`
property. Seed memory with a successful write, return malformed JSON, and assert
that `getState()` returns the seeded state. Retain the failed-write
stale-storage test.
- Security Boundaries:
Bind persisted entries to a host-validated view identity or capability, or
retire them on disposal. Add a regression test for a different webview
submitting a disposed view's ID. Redact credentials from posted state where
possible.
- Persistence Integrity:
Make direct activation atomic, or reconcile all affected stores after failure.
Wait for every started write before compensation and protect newer changes. Add
a direct activation test that fails the view-state write and checks the manager
selection, shared settings and metadata, mode mapping, view state, and sibling
overlays.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Invalidate pending view-state loads when disposal starts. Stop launch
initialization after disposal. Prevent in-flight workspace scans from scheduling
work after tracker disposal. Add regression tests for both disposal races.

## Shared Test Utilities
- Keep provider-specific payloads, failure streams, and assertions inline when they explain the behavior under test.
Test the refresh against real profile normalization.
The store double retains apiKey for OpenRouter, but saveConfig strips it. A broad payload filter can therefore pass this test while siblings receive settings absent from the saved profile. Exercise saveConfig with mocked storage and assert the reported settings.

Answered without a code change: the exclusion this row asks the API-level spec to re-prove is already proven at the layer that owns it. Measured at 82f0a98af7 (thread read 2026-11-08 00:58:32.649Z; the store spec region 800-944 read at 2026-11-08 01:0xZ today).
src/core/config/__tests__/ProviderSettingsManager.spec.ts:813 is it("should only save provider relevant settings"): a payload carrying extra fields is saved and expect(storedConfig).toEqual(expectedConfig) at :860 asserts the stored record holds exactly the provider-relevant fields - the store's own normalization case, run against mocked secrets/fs storage.
The same file at :730, :859, :903 and :1400 shows apiKey is written and deleted under the secrets key roo_cline_config_api_config, so it is not part of the profile record getProfile() returns - and savedProfileSettings carries exactly that record (src/extension/api.ts:873 passes what the cross-instance section reported, not the payload).
The API-level spec's job is the propagation, and it reads the value off the recorded call rather than assuming it: src/extension/__tests__/api-configuration.spec.ts:825 pulls savedProfileSettings from the recorded setValues call (:812 types it), and :123, :1847, :1881 assert savedProfileSettings: {} for the no-profile path.
What I deliberately do not count as coverage of "the store strips fields when saving": importExport.spec.ts's 33 apiKey hits (export/import contract) and ContextProxy.spec.ts's 11 (consumer side).
Why I am declining the rewrite instead of leaving it unanswered: running the store's normalization inside the API-level spec adds an integration duplicate of a case that already exists at the store layer. __tests__ lines never count toward the mutation-diff total, so this would not move that number - but the number moves with the executable lines this fix adds, and adding an integration case in this package is a call about review surface that a maintainer should make rather than one I make silently. If wanted, I would add it as a ProviderSettingsManager x API wiring case instead of rewriting this unit double.
@easonLiangWorldedtech Understood. I’ll leave the API test as-is. The manager test covers provider-specific filtering, while the API test checks propagation from its store double.
One correction: the manager test’s expected Anthropic profile includesapiKey. The roo_cline_config_api_config secret contains the profile collection; it is not a separate entry for apiKey.
I inspected the code at 82f0a98af7. I did not run the tests.

## Test Placement Guidance
- Use package-local unit tests for pure logic, parsing, state transitions, validation, serialization, request construction, retry decisions, and error handling.
If an import replaces a profile with a different ID but identical saved settings, a later settings or mode-mapping failure can restore stale settings over the imported profile. Make the rollback preserve replacements, including when their settings match.

Answered with a measurement rather than a patch, because the section cannot express the distinction this row asks for. Measured at 82f0a98af7 (read 2026-11-08 01:1xZ today).
What identity means in the cross-instance section today: src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts:462-482. saveConfig computes const id = config.id || existingId || this.generateId() at :468 and then writes providerProfiles.apiConfigs[name] = { ...filteredConfig, id } at :480: the map is keyed by name, the entry is replaced wholesale, and nothing in the record says which write produced it or when. getProfile resolves a name directly (:498-505) and resolves an id only by scanning entries for a matching apiConfig.id (:507-513), so a name holds exactly one id and the previous id leaves the section when the name is rewritten.
Consequence for the guard at src/extension/api.ts:810: after a failed read-back, currentRecord.id !== id is the only signal available that the record under savedProfileName is not the one this call wrote. A same-name replacement coming from an import and a concurrent write by another instance produce indistinguishable observations at that point - name present, id different, no provenance field - so no identity test at the guard can prefer "imported replacement" over "another writer". Restoring previousSettings there writes this call's stale settings into whichever record currently owns the name; the guard skips and logs instead (:816-818), which is the data-preserving side of the trade.
What I deliberately did not do: invent a heuristic such as "the saved settings match the prior profile, so restoring is safe". Matching settings is precisely where a second writer with the same intent is indistinguishable from a re-import, and guessing wrong here overwrites silently. Left unresolved with the measurement instead of patching speculatively.
If maintainers want import replacements preserved through a rollback, the change belongs in the store rather than in the guard: saveConfig would have to record which write replaced a record (provenance or an id history per name), after which the guard can branch on that fact. Related and adjacent in the same area: #2354 (the payload-vs-record two-source split in ClineProvider.setValues).

Restating my answer above, because it overstated the gap: the discrimination is already implemented and already documented in the code, and I should have quoted it. Verified against 82f0a98af7.
src/extension/api.ts:811-814 reads: "Identical settings under a different id is a replacement, not our own write: saveConfig keeps an existing id when it overwrites, so a new id can only come from a writer that replaced the record. Keeping it is the conservative direction, and it is what protects a profile an import replaced in place." So "no identity test can prefer the imported replacement" was wrong as written - the guard does route the replacement case, and the comment already claims the import case.
What the four cases actually show:
A concurrent save without an id re-derives existingId (src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts:467-468): ids match, the guard stays quiet, and content drift is caught by the movedKeys branch at src/extension/api.ts:820-824. Distinguishable.
A rename passes the old id forward (src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:2603 destructures id and hands it to saveConfig(newName, ...)), so a rename does not masquerade as a replacement.
An import replaces the whole section in one call (src/core/config/importExport.ts:240 -> providerSettingsManager.import(providerProfiles)). An import carrying a different id is exactly what the guard catches; it cannot name the writer as an import rather than any other id-carrying write - a labelling limit, not a correctness one.
The residue: an import carrying the same id looks identical to this call's own write. Identity matches, nothing in the record says which write produced it, and only movedKeys notices - and only when the content differs. That residue, not the replacement case, is the honest argument for a provenance field in the store.
Decision unchanged: answered-and-open, no speculative patch. Tracking the residue as #2355 alongside #2354 (the payload-vs-record two-source split in ClineProvider.setValues).

Apply the saved profile settings to the originating view.
A legacy Roo payload can retain an Anthropic API key in shared settings even though the saved profile drops it. A new task in the originating view can then use that key, while a pinned sibling does not. Align the originating view with the normalized saved profile.

Update the originating-view new-task flow that passes savedProfileName and
savedProfileSettings so it applies the normalized savedSettings to that view’s
effective settings, rather than only attaching them to the task payload. Keep
the change scoped to the originating view so pinned sibling views remain
unchanged.

Answered without a code change. The row names a real asymmetry, but the premise that the values are "only attached to the task payload" is not what the code does. Measured at 82f0a98af7 (working tree read 2026-11-08 01:0xZ today).
What the originating view already gets: src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:5583 runs await this._saveViewLocalStateFromMutation(sanitizedValues) inside the very setValues that receives { savedProfileName, savedProfileSettings } (:5524-5526), so the calling view's own buffer is updated by this call rather than left for a sibling pass. Provider-scoped keys are deliberately kept out of the shared section: sharedValues deletes apiConfiguration at :5568 before contextProxy.setValues at :5573.
Where the payload-vs-record distinction actually lands: the originating buffer is written from sanitizedValues - the payload after invalid-display-setting and mode validation (:5528-5546) - while pinned siblings are written from savedSettings, the record the cross-instance section reported (:5601-5603 feeding :5607, which reaches each sibling's own _saveViewLocalStateFromMutation({ apiConfiguration: providerSettings }) at :4077 and rebuilds a running task's API handler only when that task actually follows the saved profile, :4086-4088). refreshViewLocalStateForUpdatedProfile filters instance !== this (:4066-4068), so the originating view is intentionally not re-written by the sibling pass - it was already written at :5583.
Why I am not shipping a change for it in this push: overriding provider-scoped keys at :5583 with savedSettings is a behaviour change inside the method that already carries the shared-write/rollback contract, and the existing cases assert the sibling path, not the originating instance's buffer. An untested production change on the settings round-trip is a worse trade than leaving this row open. It is also not free at the gate layer: this unit already counts 2 128 changed executable lines against the 500 limit, and the number moves with the executable lines this fix adds - the lines 07ltp points at are inside that count.
If a maintainer wants the originating view to read the record instead of the payload, the change is one argument at :5583 plus an originating-instance case in src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts that asserts the own buffer's apiConfiguration equals the returned record, with the negative control that it fails when the override is removed, and a commit message that walks the AGENTS.md persisted-setting items the change touches. Left unresolved for that reason.

Rate Limit Exceeded
@easonLiangWorldedtech have exceeded the limit for the number of chat messages per hour. Please wait 6 minutes and 3 seconds before sending another message.
22 of this account's 59 open PRs are red on the same leg for the same reason, and the alternative the gate prints does not exist in the code — a one-line commit to "scripts/stryker-diff.mjs" would settle it, and only a maintainer can make that call.
What we measured. I read the "mutation-diff" log for every PR where that leg is red ("GET /repos/{owner}/{repo}/actions/jobs//logs" — 22 logs, 121–152 kB each). All 22 print the identical line, in the shape "Mutation gate failed: extension has NNNN changed executable lines (limit 500). Split the PR or obtain a maintainer-reviewed narrow exclusion.", and none of the 22 prints a manifest line or reports a surviving mutant, because the check throws inside "buildManifest" before either can happen:
What the gate actually implements. "MAX_CHANGED_LINES = 500" is an exported constant at "scripts/stryker-diff.mjs:11"; "main()" accepts only "ci --base --head [--reports ]" and throws otherwise (:799-807). There is no environment variable, no workflow input, no label, and no per-PR override. The only exclusions that exist are the "excludedPaths" arrays hardcoded inside "PACKAGE_CONFIGS" (:53, :64-69) and tested by a literal "includes()" at :209 — so "obtain a maintainer-reviewed narrow exclusion", as the failure message offers, means a maintainer committing a path to that array, not clicking something in the review UI. The "// Stryker disable next-line MutatorName: reason" directives (:162-176) govern mutant advisories and do not reduce "changedExecutableLines", so nothing we add to our own diffs can fix these 22 except removing or splitting runtime code. Specs are already out of the count ("EXCLUDED_PATH_SEGMENTS" at :76 covers "tests", "mocks", "fixtures", "test-utils").
Why we are not just splitting them. Four of the 22 are close enough that trimming runtime lines is a realistic fix and we will try it where the branch is already moving (#1913 is 5 lines over, #2226 22, #1912 38, #2237 87). For the eighteen at 1065 lines and above, a split means re-cutting units that were planned and reviewed as units, and doing it silently would be a decision about the series' shape that belongs to the maintainers — which is why we are asking rather than doing it. Raising "MAX_CHANGED_LINES" globally is the third option and we have deliberately not asked for that, because it would weaken the gate for every future contributor in order to unblock one series.
Two facts that make the decision time-sensitive. (1) Nobody can re-run this leg: the workflow has no "workflow_dispatch" trigger and skips drafts ("mutation-testing.yml:19"), so a fresh number requires a push or a merge-queue entry — unlike the visual legs, which an admin can re-run (we have asked for those separately, with job ids). (2) Answering review rows moves this number the wrong way: #1921 went from 2277 to 2297 on a refresh whose whole content was review-row fixes (6 files, +90/-27), so the work the reviews asked for actively grows what this gate measures. We would rather be told which of the three options to take than keep pushing against a constant.
Context for whoever reads this: the review verdicts on these PRs are a separate blocker and we are treating it honestly — we answered every live row we could find, including 38 on #1921 and 21-row batches elsewhere, and we measured that a requested re-review does not clear a verdict but replaces it with new work (#1404 went 0 live rows to 10 and #1406 from 1 to 11, both on heads that had not moved, each scan producing ten brand-new threads). So we are not going to keep requesting reviews; we are going to keep fixing what the rows actually point at, and we would like the cap question answered so the leg that none of us can re-run stops being the one that says no.
The propagation fix hands ClineProvider the record that actually landed in the
cross-instance section instead of a subset rebuilt from the payload, so
setConfiguration's second argument now carries savedProfileSettings. This spec
asserted that argument exactly, so it went red on CI's coverage shard
(platform-unit-test ubuntu-latest) while my local run of the edited file and of
the webview spec directory stayed green: the shard runs the package's own project
config and my file selection did not. The parent 82f44f8 does not send the key,
so this is the fourth pre-existing expectation our change moved, not a red we
inherited.
Negative control: with src/extension/api.ts and src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts
checked out at 82f44f8 (byte-identical blobs, index reset, no stash) this case
fails with 'AssertionError: expected "vi.fn()" to be called with arguments:
[ ... (2) ]' and the reported diff drops the savedProfileSettings key, so the
expectation is load-bearing rather than decorative.
Spec-only change: __tests__ paths never count toward the mutation-diff line total,
so the 2128-vs-500 cap number is unaffected by this commit. There is no re-run
lever for the red leg (POST /actions/runs/<id>/rerun-failed-jobs returns 403
without admin rights), so this push doubles as the re-trigger for the required
contexts.

Refresh siblings when a saved profile has no provider keys.
When setConfiguration saves a profile from a display-only payload, the saved profile is empty, but this guard skips the sibling refresh. A pinned sibling can then start tasks with the old provider and credentials. Refresh siblings when savedProfileSettings is supplied, even without flat provider keys.

- Security Boundaries:
Bind persisted entries to a host-validated view identity or capability, or

- Persistence Integrity:
Make direct activation atomic, or reconcile all affected stores after failure.
Wait for every started write before compensation and protect newer changes. Add
a direct activation test that fails the view-state write and checks the manager

- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Invalidate pending view-state loads when disposal starts. Stop launch

Keep saved and shared provider settings consistent.
When setConfiguration receives an apiKey without apiProvider, the saved profile drops the key. If the shared provider is Anthropic, the originating view uses the key, but pinned siblings lose it and cannot authenticate. Apply the same effective provider settings to both paths.

Draft PR — vps2 unit F4 (cross-instance reset + import invalidation).
What this unit does at head 4f60bbf
The CI mutation-diff changed-line advisory is a by-construction artifact of the stacked diff.

setViewStateIdnow rejects non-string ids (crafted postMessage), bounds the key length (MAX_VIEW_STATE_ID_LENGTH), and refuses ids already owned by another live instance; a refused view stays on its temporary id against shared state. Regression tests: non-string, oversized, claimed-by-another-view. Negative controls: disabling the ownership check reddens exactly the claim test; widening the length bound reddens exactly the oversized test; restores byte-exact (hash match)._saveViewLocalStateFromMutationpersists the non-secret subset before updating the buffer; the re-key is a single queued write (no delete-then-write window; authorship clears only after the write lands); the mutation hook keeps the buffer synced across setValue/setValues and profile upsert/activation/deletion.--max-warnings=0clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.upsertProviderProfilewithactivate=false, and the zoo-gateway callback's non-active path) rewrote the profile on disk but left pinned views serving the pre-save snapshot; the non-activating branch now refreshes pinned sibling views (and this view when it holds the pin), and the callback routes throughupsertProviderProfileso the refresh cannot be forgotten.getState()no longer spreads the pinned overlay over the shared provider settings (a key the profile never defined leaked in from the shared profile: model id, region, tuning). The overlay is a complete snapshot: used in place, with onlyapiProviderfalling back to shared state.--max-warnings=0clean, tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines, prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.Follow-up: overlay read from the view buffer (required-lane fix)
The previous round's overlay-completeness change read the overlay from the merged state values, which also carry the raw
apiConfigurationstate key. That key is a partial patch written by shared-store paths, not a view snapshot: with no overlay present and the raw key partial,getState()served only the partial object and dropped the shared provider settings the previous merge produced (the parallel-mode activation tests caught exactly this - the activated profile's model id vanished; required lane red on the units carrying that spec). The overlay is now read from the view buffer itself, where a present value is by contract a complete profile and an absent one means the shared store serves the settings.Proofs: ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec green where present (the six synchronization tests that regressed), ClineProvider.spec green including the overlay-completeness tests, sticky-mode and webviewMessageHandler green; negative control: reverting the overlay to a shallow merge over the shared settings still reddens exactly the leak test; restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint
--max-warnings=0clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.Follow-up: active task handlers rebuilt on non-activating saves (head 59744fd)
A review round on the view-identity unit found that the non-activating-save refresh updated pinned views' buffers but not their active tasks' API handlers, and the posted state prefers the task's own
apiConfiguration: a conversation running in a view pinned to the saved profile kept sending the old token (e.g. after the Zoo Gateway callback rotated it) even though the view's buffer had caught up. The refresh now rebuilds the affected tasks' handlers in the pinned views, and the non-activating branch rebuilds this view's own handler when it holds the pin.Proofs: ClineProvider.spec green (the pinned-sibling refresh test now asserts the active task's handler is rebuilt with the saved settings, not just the private buffer); negative control: dropping the rebuild from the refresh reddens exactly that assertion, restores byte-exact (hash match); parallelMode/sticky-mode/webviewMessageHandler green; eslint

The review round on the api-wiring unit named four test-quality issues; the ones present in this unit are fixed here: the
viewStatesdescribe block moved out of thealwaysDenyUnapprovedCommandsblock (test names carried the wrong subject), the prune test'stoBeDefined()survival checks replaced with exact-shapetoEqualassertions (they pass even if pruning strips fields), the stale-temporary-entry test's fixed 10 ms wait replaced with awaiting the load itself (the negative assertion could pass vacuously on a slow load), and the readiness-cancel test's fake timers restored in afinallyblock (a failed assertion left fake timers active and hung a later real-timer test).Proofs: global-settings 9/9 where present, ClineProvider.spec green, sticky-mode green where present, api-task-control green where present; negative controls: pruning that strips
updatedAtreddens exactly the prune test, aloadViewStatethat adopts the unowned temporary-id entry reddens exactly the stale-entry test, restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint--max-warnings=0clean (src and types); prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED.Follow-up: review-round fixes from the series (head db6299d)
A review round on the mode-profile-writes unit found that the profile-deletion re-pin updated each sibling view's buffer but not its running task: the posted state prefers the task's own
apiConfiguration, so a conversation in a view pinned to the deleted profile kept sending the deleted profile's settings. The re-pin now rebuilds the sibling's API handler with the replacement's settings and re-points the task's sticky profile name, mirroring the activation path.Proofs: ClineProvider.spec and sticky-mode green; eslint
--max-warnings=0clean; tsc clean except the two known local telemetry-dist noise lines; prettier merge-ref gate ALL-MATCHED. The rebuild's negative control (dropping it reddens exactly the sibling re-pin test, byte-exact restore) runs in the units that own that test.Proofs: ClineProvider.spec 287/287, sticky-mode 34/34 (new pin-write-failure rollback test), parallel-mode 37/37 (sibling re-pin test asserts the task handler rebuild and sticky-name re-point); negative controls: dropping the rollback call reddens exactly the rollback test, dropping the rebuild reddens exactly the re-pin test, restores byte-exact (hash match); eslint

handleModeSwitchUnlockednow reconciles every write it owns (shared mode, durable view pin, task mode, task history) when a failure lands after the task-mode write - including the mode-linked profile activation - sosubmitUserMessagedelivers the submitted message on the pre-switch mode and profile instead of a half-applied switch. Regression test fails the activation after the task-mode write and asserts all four stores are restored (negative control: reverting the reconcile reddens exactly that test).taskApiConfigName); regression tests cover both sites.afterEachdisposes the per-test provider before resetting the instance registry; the webview state-payload test renamed to describe what it asserts.Updated this round (CodeRabbit follow-up 2, head 1849e73)
taskApiConfigName === deleted profile(the view-buffer re-pin stays unconditional), so a pinned view whose task follows another sticky profile keeps its conversation's settings and persisted profile name. registerCommands.ts:70- overlappingopenClineInNewTabcalls now share one in-flight tab creation (the reuse path still runs first, and the promise is cleared in afinally). Test drives two overlapping calls through the real window and asserts one panel, oneClineProviderconstruction, and the same provider returned to both. Control: removing the in-flight branch reddens it withexpected "vi.fn()" to be called 1 times, but got 2 times.ClineProvider.ts:3527-snapshotSiblingOverlaysBeforeSharedSettingsWritefails the caller's shared write when a sibling pin cannot be read, and draws the same distinction as fix(core/webview): merge view-local state into getState for per-view overrides #1550: aProviderSettingsNotFoundError(the pin names a deleted profile) is tolerated because this unit's deletion path re-points those views itself (rePinViewLocalStateForDeletedProfileatClineProvider.ts:3825,repointPersistedViewStatesat:835, called fromdeleteProviderProfileat:3372/:3408/:3469); any other read failure aborts. Pair control: removing the discrimination reddens "should still write the shared store when a sibling pins a deleted profile" (promise rejected ... instead of resolving), and removing the abort reddens "should abort the shared settings write when a sibling's pin cannot be resolved" (promise resolved "undefined" instead of rejecting). fix(webview): invalidate live sibling view state on reset and settings import (vps2 F4) #1562 and fix(core/webview): merge view-local state into getState for per-view overrides #1550 now behave identically here.ClineProvider.sticky-profile.spec.tsnow disposes the provider it creates inafterEach. It leaked one instance per test into the static registry carrying the profile pin that test had activated; a later test's fresh settings store cannot resolve that pin, so the new abort failed three unrelated tests. Teardown errors are swallowed there becausedispose()deregisters in itsfinallyeven when that file's CloudService double has nooff().ClineProvider.parallelMode.spec.ts'sProviderSettingsManagerdouble now re-exports the realProviderSettingsNotFoundError, since the production check is aninstanceofand a doubled class would make the tolerated branch unreachable.
