Tracking issue: 1396

Summary

L1 of the file-write safety series (plan: retired fork tracking item 33 (retired fork tracking item 33)), part of epic 1375. DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly — the funnel every write tool uses on the chat-diff (PREVENT_FOCUS_DISRUPTION) path — currently blocks the save result on the LSP settle: it waits writeDelayMs, re-runs vscode.languages.getDiagnostics(), and only then returns. This PR makes the save resolve immediately and moves the diagnostics into an asynchronous post-save tail, so post-save latency drops by the LSP-settle time while the diagnostic information is still delivered — just later.

Changes

  • src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts
    • saveDirectly now resolves without awaiting diagnostics: the write + document-open steps run as before, then it returns { newProblemsMessage: undefined, userEdits: undefined, finalContent: content } and clears this.newProblemsMessage, so the tool-result JSON no longer carries a problems field computed before the LSP settled.
    • New private tail method emitPostSaveDiagnostics: when diagnostics are enabled it keeps the existing writeDelayMs delay (moved into the tail), recomputes with the same getNewDiagnostics + diagnosticsToProblemsString call (Error severity, same includeDiagnosticMessages / maxDiagnosticMessages from task state), and — when new problems exist — emits them through the existing ClineSay type error as a single self-contained string: New problems detected after saving file: <relPath> + the problems text. Rationale: only Error-severity diagnostics reach this point and error is the closest existing say type with no task-failure semantics; no new message type is introduced and packages/types is untouched.
    • diagnosticsEnabled: false skips the tail entirely (no delay, no say), exactly as before. The tail is abort/crash-safe: any throw (e.g. task abort rejecting say) is caught and logged via console.warn — never an unhandled rejection (no floating promises).
  • src/integrations/editor/__tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts — the saveDirectly blocks now assert the async contract with fake timers: the save resolves before any diagnostics say; advancing timers + flushing yields exactly one say("error", …) with the settled problems payload when new Error diagnostics exist; diagnosticsEnabled: false and clean saves never say; the say type is exactly "error". Existing saveDirectly routing assertions (safeWriteText signature, write-delay pass-through) stay green.

Notes

  • Informational follow-up event only — no toggle, per plan: a setting would either re-introduce the blocking path or drop the information.
  • The tool-result problems field is intentionally dropped from the save response; the same information now arrives via the post-save event.
  • Stacking: this branch is built on 1395 (S3 atomic publish), whose head branch lives on the fork, so the PR targets main and its diff includes the S3 commit. Merge only after 1395 lands (then this becomes a fast-forward); it will be rebased onto the final 1395 head before merge.

Review-gate re-trigger (2026-08-30): empty commit cb13606 (no code change) re-runs CI and CodeRabbit current-head review under the org new PR review gate; the code head remains 991ab69.

Issue Links

Closes: #1396 (async save diagnostics, L1).

Test Procedure

  1. pnpm --dir src test -- integrations/editor/__tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts services/mcp/__tests__/mcpWriteScope.spec.ts services/mcp/__tests__/McpHub.spec.ts
  2. pnpm --dir src exec tsc --noEmit
  3. Manual: enable Include diagnostic messages, save a file that a linter flags with a delay, and confirm the New problems detected after saving file: row appears once; then abort the task during the delay and confirm no row is persisted.
Environment: Ubuntu 22.04 and Windows 11 runners; the Windows DACL paths are exercised by the win32-tagged tests.

Pre-Submission Checklist

  • No .changeset files, no CHANGELOG edits
  • ESLint suppression counts unchanged (0 errors / 0 warnings on every touched file)
  • Regression tests at the lowest layer that would have failed
  • tsc --noEmit clean
  • Required checks green: check-translations, platform-unit-test (ubuntu/windows), compile, knip, e2e-mock, Build test VSIX

Documentation Updates

No user-facing documentation change. The post-save tail lifecycle (cancellable, disposal-aware) is documented in the cancelPostSaveDiagnosticsTails comment.

AI assistance

Assisted by an automated agent; the review-thread history on this PR records what was fixed versus argued, including where a negative control could not be established.

Verification at head a0e8e40e0

Required checks, all green on this head: check-translations, platform-unit-test (ubuntu-latest), platform-unit-test (windows-latest), compile, knip, e2e-mock, Build test VSIX.

Local validation for the changed files: tsc --noEmit at the src level, eslint on each edited file with --max-warnings=0 (suppression counts unchanged), and the focused suites for the save/diagnostics path run from src.

Advisory gates on this branch (mutation-diff, webview-visual, extension-host-visual) are tracked on the split-tracking issue; the mutation failure predates this unit and is not introduced by it.

Post-save diagnostics on the chat-diff path

DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly resolves before the LSP diagnostics settle; the fire-and-forget tail reports new problems only through the non-interactive say("error") chat/webview row. As a result formatFileWriteResponse receives no newProblemsMessage on the chat-diff (PREVENT_FOCUS_DISRUPTION) path, while the diff-editor saveChanges path still returns it. This is intentional for L1 and tracked as follow-up #2210 (restore a model-visible signal without blocking the save).

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Saving now completes without waiting for diagnostic checks. Any newly detected errors for the saved file are reported afterward in the background, so diagnostics don’t delay the save.
    • Background checks compare results with the diagnostics present when each save began, helping ensure only new errors are reported.
    • Pending checks are cancelled when a task is disposed. If cancellation encounters an issue, cleanup continues.

saveDirectly now returns without waiting for post-save diagnostics. When diagnostics are enabled, a background tail reports new errors for the saved file. Task disposal cancels pending tails.

Changes: Post-save diagnostics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Non-blocking save and diagnostic reporting
src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts, src/integrations/editor/__tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts
saveDirectly captures a diagnostics baseline for each call and starts a background tail when diagnostics are enabled. The tail filters diagnostics to the saved file and reports new Error-severity problems through task.say. Tests cover timing, per-save baselines, filtering, cancellation, and reporting.
Task disposal cancellation
src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts
Task.disposeOnce() cancels pending diagnostics tails. If cancellation throws, disposal logs the error and continues.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(editor): async post-save diagnostics on chat-diff save path (L1, #1375)" matches the main change. DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly now resolves before LSP diagnostics settle, and new Error-severity problems are reported later through a non-interactive say("error") row. The title uses a conventional-commit prefix, names the affected area (editor), and states the behavior. It is slightly long at 76 characters, and the epic/series reference (L1, #1375) adds noise, but the primary change is clear. A teammate scanning history would understand it.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template and covers the main sections: linked issue (Closes #1396), summary and implementation details, test procedure with commands and a manual step, and the pre-submission checklist. It explains the key design choices, including dropping the problems field from the tool result, using the existing error say type, and the stacking on #1395. Gaps: the Visual Snapshots and Videos sections are not addressed, and the Get in Touch section is missing a Discord username. The PR also includes a stray review-gate note and a self-referential 'Verification at head' block that adds noise. Some sentences are long and use contractions-free but compound phrasing that departs from the requested Simplified Technical English style. Overall the description is mostly complete, so it passes.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#1396] Checked the whole-PR summary (mergeBase 73931fe to head 23739e8) and the incremental diff from the previous reviewed head. Incremental change: DiffViewProvider.ts adds an if (controller.signal.aborted) return guard in the post-save tail, after the settings read and before diagnosticsToProblemsString. This only stops work after cancellation. It does not change the requirements.

Requirements from the whole-PR summary:
(1) Prompt save: saveDirectly no longer awaits diagnostics. The writeDelayMs wait and diagnostic check run in the fire-and-forget emitPostSaveDiagnostics tail. It returns { newProblemsMessage: undefined, userEdits: undefined, finalContent }.
(2) Follow-up event: when new Error-severity problems exist, the tail calls say("error", "New problems detected after saving file: <relPath>..."). A clean save emits nothing.
(3) Existing type only: the say type is error. The summary lists no packages/types change.
(4) diagnosticsEnabled: false: the tail does not start.
(5) Explicit async handling: the tail call uses void. The tail body is wrapped in try/catch with console.warn, so it does not reject. cancelPostSaveDiagnosticsTails runs from Task.disposeOnce.
(6) Tests: DiffViewProvider.spec.ts and Task.spec.ts cover the async contract, clean and disabled saves, say type, and cancellation.

Not established from repository evidence in this review: the 100% codecov patch result and CI status named in the acceptance criteria. Coverage of the new abort guard branch is not confirmed by a test inspection in this round. The functional requirements are met.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR summary lists four code files: src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts, src/integrations/editor/__tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts, src/core/task/Task.ts, and src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts. The DiffViewProvider.ts hunks implement the #1396 async tail, its cancellation latch, and its per-call baseline. Task.ts adds a guarded cancelPostSaveDiagnosticsTails call in disposeOnce, which controls the tail lifecycle that #1396 requires. The spec changes test this contract. The incremental abort guard since the previous review belongs to the same tail and is in scope. No S3 atomic-publish, file-locking, or MCP-confinement change appears in the supplied file set. The PR description says the diff includes the #1395 S3 commit. The linked issue states the same stacking. The reviewed file set does not show those hunks, so this is a description discrepancy, not a demonstrated out-of-scope change. The root-level diff output was truncated at 16000 bytes, so the file list relies on the supplied summary.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path was found that leaks secrets or PII, executes unvalidated input, or bypasses approval or allowlist controls. The new diagnostic tail filters results to the saved file and uses the existing diagnostic settings. The write approval path remains unchanged.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

The unawaited diagnostics tail can corrupt persisted chat history. DiffViewProvider.ts:1203,1309 can append an error between streamed text updates. Task.say() updates only the last partial row (Task.ts:2845-2849), so the next update creates another row and leaves the original partial. addToClineMessages() then persists the message array (Task.ts:1680-1682,1710-1711).

Resolution

Prevent diagnostics from interrupting partial message updates, or update the original partial row when another message intervenes. Add a regression test that persists a streamed message with a diagnostics event between updates.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The new persisted diagnostic row lacks a Playwright component snapshot. DiffViewProvider.ts:1309-1316 emits it through say("error"), and ChatRow.tsx:1357-1386 renders it through ErrorRow. The new tail also lacks a focused test for includeDiagnosticMessages: false; the formatter test alone does not verify that the tail passes the setting and suppresses the row. The warning-only case is now covered in DiffViewProvider.spec.ts:1112-1120.

Resolution

Add a Playwright component test and theme snapshots for the diagnostic row. Add a saveDirectly test with a new error and includeDiagnosticMessages: false that verifies no row is emitted.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The post-save tail can continue work after cancellation. If disposal occurs while diagnosticsToProblemsString awaits workspace.fs.stat, the formatter can still call openTextDocument before the abort check in DiffViewProvider.ts:1297. The tail retains the task and diagnostic snapshots until the await completes. abortTask also waits for the webview flush before disposal cancels the tail. The new check after getState prevents formatting from starting after disposal, but does not cancel the pending read or formatting already in progress.

Resolution

Cancel tails when task abort starts. Make the settings read and formatter cancellation-aware, release tail-held references when cancellation wins, and prevent subsequent formatter operations. Add tests for cancellation during both awaits.

Update the stale @returns doc comment.

The comment states the return value includes new problems detected. After this change, saveDirectly always returns newProblemsMessage: undefined; problems are now emitted asynchronously via task.say("error", ...). Update the doc comment so it does not mislead future readers of this method's contract.

Consider removing the staging directory or moving it out of the target directory.

_stagingDir creates .file-safety-staging beside the written file and never removes it. DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly calls safeWriteText with a workspace path, so every direct file save leaves an empty dot-directory inside the user's project tree. That directory appears in git status and in file watchers unless the user ignores it.

Two options keep the atomic-rename guarantee, which requires the same volume as the target:

  • Remove the staging directory with rmdirSync after a successful publish, tolerating ENOTEMPTY from concurrent writers.
  • Stage the temp file directly in dirPath with a unique name instead of a subdirectory, since _tempName already includes a timestamp and a random suffix.

Make this test match its name, or remove it.

The test name states that a failure occurs after the rename and that no temp file is left behind. The body simulates no failure and asserts only that the commit rename ran, which the test at lines 80-115 already covers. The stated cleanup contract is therefore unverified.

Remove the skipIf guard so the win32 save+restore assertion runs in CI.

child_process.execFile is mocked and safeWriteText accepts the platform override, so this test does not need a Windows runner. The other win32 tests below run unconditionally with platform: "win32". With skipIf, this assertion never executes in the Linux CI lane. Drop the guard and mock openSync like the neighboring tests.

Do not log a cleanup error when safeWriteText already removed the temp file.

safeWriteText unlinks its tempPath on every failure. This safety-net fs.unlink therefore rejects with ENOENT on the normal failure path, and console.error reports a cleanup failure that did not occur. Ignore ENOENT here so the log only shows real cleanup problems.

Remove the empty staging directory after the commit.

_stagingDir creates .file-safety-staging inside the target's parent directory and nothing removes it. On the editor save path the target is a user workspace file, so the directory appears next to the saved file and in git status. Remove it best-effort after a successful commit, or place the staging file directly in dirPath with a dot-prefixed unique name.

Assert the stated failure in this test or rename it.

The test name says "failure after rename but before cleanup", but no failure is injected. The body performs a plain successful write and asserts the commit rename, which duplicates the previous test. Inject the post-rename failure, for example a rejecting backup fs.unlink, and assert that safeWriteText still resolves and leaves no temp behind.

Consider removing the staging directory or placing it outside the workspace.

_stagingDir creates .file-safety-staging in the target's own directory and nothing ever removes it. The editor save path (DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly) calls safeWriteText without tempPath, so every saved file leaves a hidden empty directory beside the user's source files. Users may see it in file trees, search results, and git status.

Two options keep the atomic rename on the same volume: remove the staging directory best-effort after the commit when it is empty, or stage the temp file directly in dirPath with a unique name and no subdirectory, then rely on openSync mode for privacy.

The staging directory stays in the workspace after every write.

_stagingDir creates .file-safety-staging next to the target file, and no code removes it. DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly calls safeWriteText for every direct file save, so each edited workspace directory gains a permanent hidden directory. This directory appears in git status for repositories without a matching ignore rule, and file watchers report it.

Remove the directory after a successful publish with a best-effort rmdir, or stage the temp file directly in dirPath with a unique name.

+	// Track whether we own the staging dir so it can be removed after commit.

Then after the commit rename succeeds:

if (ownedStagingDir) {
	try {
		fsSync.rmdirSync(ownedStagingDir)
	} catch {
// best-effort: a concurrent write may still be staging there
	}

Move staging-file I/O off the extension host thread

safeWriteText performs openSync, writeSync, fsyncSync, and closeSync on the DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly path. Because content is arbitrary editor text, large files can block the extension host during the write and sync. Use promise-based file handle APIs while preserving short-write handling and durability guarantees.

Restore the process.platform spy even when an assertion fails.

platformSpy.mockRestore() runs only after the assertions succeed. If either assertion fails, the spy stays active and every later test in this file observes win32. That turns one failure into cascading unrelated failures and hides the real cause.

Restore the spy in afterEach or in a try/finally.

The diagnostics tail runs writeDelayMs after saveDirectly resolved, so by the time it
emits, the task has usually moved on and may be sitting in ask() waiting for the user -
approval of the next tool, completion_result. say() bumps lastMessageTs unless the message
is marked non-interactive, and ask()'s pWaitFor reads a moved lastMessageTs as
"superseded": the pending ask throws AskIgnoredError even though the user never answered.
An informational message about a problem the user cannot act on yet was therefore able to
cancel the decision they were making. The trigger is ordinary - a save that introduces an
Error-severity diagnostic, followed by any ask left unanswered past the write delay.

The tail now passes isNonInteractive, the same way every other asynchronous say in Task
does. The "error" channel and the message text are unchanged, so nothing the webview or
the conversation history sees is different; only the lastMessageTs side effect is gone.

The existing emit test asserted the call with two arguments, which couples it to the
signature; it now checks the channel and the text by position. A new test pins the flag
itself, so removing it fails exactly that test.
Formatting only: the same two `new Task({...})` calls the previous commit added are
wrapped by prettier, and the only other characters that appear are the trailing commas
prettier adds with them - with whitespace and those commas removed the file is
byte-identical to the previous commit. The compile job (pnpm format:check) runs on the
merge tree, where these lines exceed the print width, and was red because of them.

🔇 Additional comments (10)
src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts (3)

1162-1166: LGTM!

1195-1216: Model context loses post-save diagnostics on the direct-save path.

saveDirectly now returns newProblemsMessage: undefined, so the tool result does not include problems. The task.say("error", ...) tail writes only to clineMessages. The model request is built from apiConversationHistory. As a result, the model never sees new Error-severity diagnostics, even when includeDiagnosticMessages is enabled. A previous review raised this point, and that thread is still open.

1218-1318: LGTM!

Also applies to: 1320-1331

src/integrations/editor/__tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts (4)

1044-1066: Restore the process.platform spy in finally.

The file still calls platformSpy.mockRestore() at the end of the test body, on Line 1065. If an assertion fails on Line 1063 or Line 1064, the spy is never restored. Later tests then run with win32 platform semantics. The author reported this fix in a previous review, but the supplied code does not include it.

1110-1133: Restore console.warn in finally.

The test calls consoleWarnSpy.mockRestore() on Line 1133, after the assertion. If the assertion fails, the mock stays active and affects later tests. The previously reported try/finally fix is not in the supplied code.

993-1042: The cancellation test still uses fixed sleeps.

The 5 ms and 80 ms setTimeout waits do not guarantee that the tail has reached slowGetState. A previous review flagged this.

Registered as an upstream-level item: a message can be emitted and persisted after disposal

This is not fixed on this branch and is not claimed as fixed. It is recorded here so the next
assessment does not re-raise it as a defect of this pull request, and so the owning change has the
shape it needs.

Defect. Task.addToClineMessages pushes the message, awaits
provider?.postStateToWebviewThrottled(), and then unconditionally emits
RooCodeEventName.Message and awaits saveClineMessages(). Disposal during that await leaves the
continuation running with abort already set: the message is announced and written to storage for
a task the user has left. A latch at a call site cannot prevent it, because by then say() has
already entered the shared path.

Why upstream. git log -L 1583,1600:src/core/task/Task.ts names 0aa636c26 (2026-10-01, the
merged upstream PR 1852) as the earliest commit defining that region, and
git branch -a --contains 0aa636c26 places it on the main line. The missing post-await re-check is
therefore main state; a branch that merely adds another reachable call site does not own it.

Acceptance for whoever fixes it. A test that disposes the task while the throttled state post
is still pending, and asserts that no Message event is emitted and saveClineMessages is not
called. The guard has to sit after the await, not only at the entry, since the entry check is what
the pending await defeats.

Negative-control shape. With the guard in place, removing exactly that post-await check reddens
precisely this test and no other. A control that reddens a broad set means the mutant is wrong
rather than that the coverage is strong. The fix also has to say what it means for ordinary
cancellation: every say and ask passes through here, so an early return changes whether a
message still reaches storage and still emits its event during a normal cancel, and that decision
should be made deliberately rather than as a side effect.

Not tied to a commit. This describes the shared path in Task.ts, not a state of any one head
of this pull request.

Review follow-ups: two overlapping saveDirectly calls keep their own pre-save diagnostics baselines (one say with the new problem); a tail cancelled while its delay is aborted does no post-save diagnostics work and emits nothing. DiffViewProvider.spec 83 passed. The model-visible behaviour gap is tracked in Zoo-Code-Org#2210 and documented in the PR body.

Three review threads addressed

  • Model feedback on the chat-diff path (documented + tracked) — the behavior is intentional for L1: saveDirectly resolves before the LSP settle and the tail emits new problems only via the non-interactive say("error") chat/webview row, so newProblemsMessage is undefined on that path (the diff-editor saveChanges path still returns it). The PR body now states this explicitly, and the gap between the two approval paths is tracked in editor: restore model-visible post-save diagnostics on the chat-diff save path #2210 (model-visible post-save diagnostics on the chat-diff path).
  • Overlapping saves baseline test — two saveDirectly calls of the same file are started before either tail runs, with different pre-save snapshots (the problem lands between the two writes). Each tail compares against its own captured baseline: exactly one say fires, with the new problem. Swapping the captured preDiagnostics for the shared this.preDiagnostics would emit nothing and fail the test.
  • Cancellation during the delay — a delay mock that rejects with an AbortError when the tail signal aborts, followed by cancelPostSaveDiagnosticsTails(): the tail exits before the post-save snapshot, so getDiagnostics ran only once (the pre-save snapshot) and neither say nor console.warn fired. Removing the aborted checks would query diagnostics and fail the assertions.

Local: DiffViewProvider.spec.ts 83 passed.

Follow-up thread addressed

The cancellation test now exercises disposal while the save is in flight: the fs.writeFile publish is held pending, saveDirectly is started, cancelPostSaveDiagnosticsTails() runs while the save awaits the write, then the write is released. The tail-start point is reached after cancellation, so nothing starts: no post-save delay call and no say.

upstream/main read from ls-remote at the merge moment: 73931fe
('chore(deps): update dependency zustand to v5.0.16 (Zoo-Code-Org#2275)'). merge base: 764db84. Branch head
before the merge: b65c24f. Rehearsed with 'git merge --no-commit --no-ff', read the conflicted
paths from all three stages, aborted, then merged again for real.

Conflicts: 2 files, 3 regions.

src/integrations/editor/__tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts, fixture region (18 ours / 9 theirs).
Took main's makeTaskDouble() fixture over the branch's inline double. main's helper already defaults
includeDiagnosticMessages: true and maxDiagnosticMessages: 50, which is what the branch spelled out
inline, so preferring main's shape lost nothing behavioural. main's double carries no say(), and the
branch's L1 assertions need it (saveDirectly's fire-and-forget diagnostics tail emits via say
('error')), so the merged helper returns a declared double type
'type TaskDouble = { providerRef: { deref: Mock }; say: Mock }' and adds say: vi.fn().mockResolvedValue(true).
The branch's 'let mockTask: any' did not come across: under main's 'let mockTask: Task' the branch's
11 mockTask.say.mock.calls sites failed typecheck (TS2339) and providerRef.deref().getState failed
TS18048, so the merged file types the double as TaskDouble and hands it to DiffViewProvider through
asTask(), which holds the single 'as unknown as Task' cast in one named place with a comment. That
keeps main's anti-any direction and the branch's assertions intact instead of trading one for the other.

Same file, assertion block (352 ours / 5 theirs). Took the branch side, which carries the branch's L1
assertions plus its 340 new lines, and dropped main's five lines. main's block asserted
expect(diffViewProvider.newProblemsMessage).toBe("") against the synchronous behaviour; the merged
src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts auto-merged to the branch's asynchronous one - it declares
'newProblemsMessage?: string' privately (bracket access) and returns { newProblemsMessage: undefined }
- so main's assertion describes a behaviour the merged tree no longer has. Lane evidence below.

src/eslint-suppressions.json (140 ours / 0 theirs): took main's blob whole. It has 265 entries and
2870 suppressed counts against the branch's 338 and 3766; main removed 73 per-file entries and added
none, and the branch added none either, so the region was main's cleanup against base content the
branch left in place. Where both parents keep an entry the merged tree follows main's lower count
(api/providers/xai.ts 7 -> 4, presentAssistantMessage-images.spec 16 -> 14, checkpoint.test 5 -> 3,
ClineProvider.spec 196 -> 195). No entry was re-added: 'pnpm --dir src run lint' exits 0 with 0
problems against main's blob, so no file in the merged tree sits above main's count for it.

Verification on the merged tree, in order:
- pnpm install --frozen-lockfile after the merge: exit 0, lockfile unmodified. It moved installed ai
7.0.148 -> 7.0.162 and katex 0.18.2 -> 0.19.1, which is what the merged manifests declare (ai 7.0.162,
katex ^0.19.0); the branch declared neither change, so this is main arriving, not drift between the
lockfile and the manifests.
- pnpm --dir src run check-types: exit 0. pnpm --dir webview-ui run check-types: exit 0.
- pnpm --dir src run lint: exit 0, 0 problems.
- Lanes run: 'pnpm --dir src run test integrations/editor --run' 2 files / 92 tests passed - this is
the lane that decides the assertion-block resolution; 'pnpm --dir src run test core/task --run' 53
files / 997 tests passed; 'pnpm --dir webview-ui run test components/settings --run' 60 files / 776
tests passed (SettingsView is not in this PR's diff; run as a regression sample, not a requirement).
- Lanes NOT run: everything else in 'pnpm test' - no full src vitest run, no packages lanes, no
apps/vscode-e2e, no lifecycle:model-check, and no local Stryker (the mutation runner is not installed
on this box, so mutation evidence is left to CI).
- prettier --check over the paths either parent touched vs the merge base: 857 paths, 825 present.
784 have a parser and were checked in 8 batches of at most 100, after classifying every extension in
the set with 'prettier --file-info' (--file-info rejects multiple paths, so classification is one
representative probe per extension). 783 were clean on the first pass; the one file that differed is
the hand-composed DiffViewProvider.spec.ts fixture block, formatted with prettier --write (9 lines
changed, line count unchanged) and then clean on re-check, after which check-types, lint and the three
lanes above were re-run on the formatted tree. 73 paths were not checked: 41 have no parser (.gitignore
and .png - counted as not run, not as passing) and 32 are absent because main deleted them (its
provider-settings consolidation); 0 are prettier-ignored.
- Additive survivor arithmetic over the test paths either parent touched (270 files): the branch adds
14 test titles over the merge base, main adds 1183, and 0 of those 1197 required titles are missing
from the merged tree. No test file present in either parent is absent from the merge.
- Path assertions against the win32 drive trap: the two resolve("/") and join("/") sites in
DiffViewProvider.spec.ts sit inside the branch's vi.mock("path") factory, so they are mocked
construction rather than the real resolver and carry no drive letter. This merge introduces no
OS-conditional constant with a hard-coded drive; the 14 such sites in the merge set are in
src/utils/__tests__/shell.spec.ts and src/integrations/terminal/__tests__/TerminalProfile.spec.ts,
main's own files, which arrive unchanged.

No .changeset file and no CHANGELOG edit.

Refresh merge: upstream/main 73931fe8be253b93ec11103a0672c615e849f895 ('chore(deps): update dependency zustand to v5.0.16 (#2275)', read from git ls-remote at the merge moment) merged into this branch.

Merge base 764db84eb. Branch head before: b65c24ff1. Merged head: 5cc9e1a5a0a5cc5676ed02e7d329e980447909d2. Rehearsed with git merge --no-commit --no-ff, read both conflicted paths from all three stages, aborted, then merged for real.

Conflicts: 2 files, 3 regions.

  1. src/integrations/editor/__tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts, fixture region (18 ours / 9 theirs). Took main's makeTaskDouble() fixture instead of the branch's inline double: main's helper already defaults includeDiagnosticMessages: true and maxDiagnosticMessages: 50, exactly what the branch spelled out inline, so nothing behavioural is lost. main's double has no say() and the branch's L1 assertions need it (the fire-and-forget diagnostics tail emits via say("error")), so the merged helper returns a declared double type type TaskDouble = { providerRef: { deref: Mock }; say: Mock } and adds say: vi.fn().mockResolvedValue(true). The branch's let mockTask: any did not come across: under main's let mockTask: Task the branch's 11 mockTask.say.mock.calls sites failed typecheck (TS2339) and providerRef.deref().getState failed TS18048, so the double is typed as TaskDouble and handed to DiffViewProvider through asTask(), which holds the single as unknown as Task cast in one named place with a comment. That keeps main's anti-any direction and the branch's assertions instead of trading one for the other.
  2. Same file, assertion block (352 ours / 5 theirs). Took the branch side (its L1 assertions plus its 340 new lines) and dropped main's five lines. main's block asserted expect(diffViewProvider.newProblemsMessage).toBe(""); the merged DiffViewProvider.ts auto-merged to the branch's asynchronous shape - it declares newProblemsMessage?: string privately and returns { newProblemsMessage: undefined } - so main's assertion describes behaviour the merged tree no longer has. The integrations/editor lane below is what decided this.
  3. src/eslint-suppressions.json (140 ours / 0 theirs). Took main's blob whole: 265 entries / 2870 suppressed counts, against the branch's 338 / 3766. main removed 73 per-file entries and added none; the branch added none, so the region was main's cleanup against base content the branch left in place. No entry was re-added and nothing sits above main's count: pnpm --dir src run lint exits 0 with 0 problems against main's blob.

Hooks. .husky/_/pre-commit and .husky/_/pre-push are husky's two-line wrappers (#!/usr/bin/env sh + . "$(dirname "$0")/h") regenerated by pnpm install --frozen-lockfile in this worktree, so both gates really run. pre-commit ran lint-staged over the 857 staged paths in 17 chunks (87 [COMPLETED] lines). pre-push ran the repo check-types script through turbo: Tasks: 11 successful, 11 total, Changeset files: 10, 5.6s.

Amend, disclosed. The first merge commit 65177de6d staged the resolved spec before I composed the fixture and formatted it, so it carried main's unmodified helper (2146 lines, no say on the double) and would have failed check-types. Nothing was pushed at that point; I re-staged the composed, prettier-formatted file and amended (allowed: unpushed), which is 5cc9e1a5a. HEAD tree == verified worktree tree, git status clean. Push used one ls-remote lease read immediately before (b65c24ff1) and one push; readback 5cc9e1a5a.

Gates run locally, in order. pnpm install --frozen-lockfile after the merge: exit 0, lockfile unmodified, moved installed ai 7.0.148 -> 7.0.162 and katex 0.18.2 -> 0.19.1, which is what the merged manifests declare (ai 7.0.162, katex ^0.19.0) - main arriving, not lockfile/manifest drift. pnpm --dir src run check-types: 0. pnpm --dir webview-ui run check-types: 0. pnpm --dir src run lint: 0 problems. Lanes run: pnpm --dir src run test integrations/editor --run = 2 files / 92 tests passed (decides conflict 2); pnpm --dir src run test core/task --run = 53 files / 997 tests passed; pnpm --dir webview-ui run test components/settings --run = 60 files / 776 tests passed (SettingsView is not in this PR's diff; run as a regression sample).
Gates not run. Everything else in pnpm test: no full src vitest run, no packages lanes, no apps/vscode-e2e, no lifecycle:model-check, and no local Stryker (the mutation runner is not installed on this box, so mutation evidence is CI-only).
prettier. Over the paths either parent touched vs the merge base: 857 paths, 825 present. Extensions classified with prettier --file-info (it rejects multiple paths, so one representative probe per extension: .ts/.mts/.tsx typescript, .js/.mjs/.cjs babel, .json, .yaml/.yml, .md, .css; .gitignore and .png infer no parser). 784 parseable paths checked with prettier --check in 8 batches of at most 100: 783 clean on the first pass; the only differing file was the hand-composed DiffViewProvider.spec.ts fixture block, formatted with prettier --write (9 lines, line count unchanged) and clean on re-check, after which check-types, lint and the three lanes were re-run on the formatted tree. 73 paths not checked: 41 no-parser (counted as not run, not as passing) + 32 absent because main deleted them (its packages/types/src/provider-settings/* consolidation); 0 prettier-ignored.
Additive survivor arithmetic. Over the test paths either parent touched (270 files): the branch adds 14 test titles over the merge base, main adds 1183, and 0 of those 1197 required titles are missing from the merged tree; no test file present in either parent is absent from the merge.
Path assertions. The two resolve("/") / join("/") sites in DiffViewProvider.spec.ts sit inside the branch's vi.mock("path") factory, so they are mocked construction, not the real resolver, and carry no drive letter. This merge introduces no OS-conditional constant with a hard-coded drive; the 14 such sites in the merge set are in src/utils/__tests__/shell.spec.ts (10) and src/integrations/terminal/__tests__/TerminalProfile.spec.ts (4), main's own files, which arrive unchanged.

Mutation-diff pair, read under the campaign gate rule.

  • BEFORE, pre-merge branch head b65c24ff1, job 122370817016 (completed/success): log summary Mutation-testing 1 package(s) from merge base 764db84eb900: extension (60 lines), no DryRunExecutor ... initial test run failure, and a mutant list was drawn - 6 survivor advisories (DiffViewProvider.ts:1232 NoCoverage BooleanLiteral, :1251 Survived ConditionalExpression, :1258 Survived ConditionalExpression, :1301 Survived OptionalChaining -> task.say, :1316 and :1316/:1331 Survived CallExpression -> ;) plus 1 directive-shape advisory at Task.ts:4350 about Stryker disable next-line needing a concrete reason. So: 'extension 60 changed executable lines with a survivor list'.
  • AFTER, merged head 5cc9e1a5a, job 128539811140: still running when this comment was written (step 'Enforce executable-line scope and run advisory mutation testing' = in_progress, log not yet uploaded), so no number and no survivor list drawn yet. I will not write 'no survivors' for 'no number drawn' and will post the outcome in a follow-up.

State after the merge. mergeable: true, mergeable_state: blocked (approval requirements, not conflicts). GitHub cleared both labels this PR carried - it is unlabelled now (awaiting-author and has-conflicts are gone). Review threads: 39 total, 39 resolved, 0 live, 0 made outdated by this merge - nothing in the thread set needed an answer for this merge. Review threads and verdict holders are unchanged otherwise; the review_decision field on the PR payload reads null while a human CHANGES_REQUESTED review from 2026-10-27 exists in the reviews list, which is a discrepancy I have reported to the Lead rather than a claim about verdict holding. No .changeset file and no CHANGELOG edit.

Resolve a mutation gap

Add or strengthen a focused test that fails under the mutation. If the mutant is equivalent, request maintainer approval for the narrowest mutator-specific exclusion and explain why it cannot change behavior:

// Stryker disable next-line ConditionalExpression: normalized input cannot reach the alternate branch
const result = condition ? value : fallback

Broad all exclusions and exclusions without a concrete reason are reported as advisories.

Reproduce locally

Review comments at @src/integrations/editor/__tests__/DiffViewProvider.spec.ts:
- Around line 1154-1156: Update the test containing the mockTask.say assertions
to restore both spies in a finally block, so cleanup runs even if an assertion
or awaited operation fails; preserve the existing test behavior while ensuring
platform and warning spies cannot affect later tests.
- Around line 1058-1072: Extend the DiffViewProvider diagnostics tests around
the postDiagnostics fixture with mixed-severity diagnostics for the saved file,
and assert that the emitted payload includes only Error diagnostics. Add a case
where that file has only non-Error diagnostics and verify that nothing is
emitted, preserving the current Error-only filtering behavior.

Review comments at @src/integrations/editor/DiffViewProvider.ts:
- Around line 1302-1310: Update the diagnostics `task?.say()` persistence flow
so a write started before tab closure cannot recreate the task after disposal;
ensure disposal is checked at the point the awaited state post would commit, not
only before `say()` begins.
- Around line 1302-1310: Update the diagnostics emission through task?.say in
DiffViewProvider so reporting new problems does not displace an active partial
message. Use the existing mechanism that preserves the active partial while
emitting diagnostics, keeping the diagnostic text and non-interactive behavior
unchanged.
- Line 1274: Update the diagnostics tail around taskRef.deref() to observe the
existing disposal cancellation and settle even if the settings read is stalled.
After the read completes, check cancellation before starting formatting, and
stop the tail without retaining the task or diagnostic snapshot.
- Around line 1269-1271: Update the save-tail logic that collects
postDiagnostics so each tail can determine whether a later save has superseded
it; prevent an older tail from emitting diagnostics belonging to the newer
revision, while preserving diagnostic reporting for the current save.
- Line 1309: Update diagnostic-row processing so a diagnostic arriving while an
approval snapshot is being posted does not replace or discard the pending
approval ask; preserve it in the resulting snapshot so ChatView can keep the
approval controls available.
- Line 1317: Update the successful and rejected-say() post-save tests to assert
that postSaveTails is empty after the operation settles, confirming completed
controllers are released by the cleanup in the post-save flow.

---

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add a Playwright component test and theme snapshots for the diagnostic row. Add
focused `saveDirectly` tests that verify no `say` occurs for warning-only
diagnostics or when `includeDiagnosticMessages` is false.

- Persistence Integrity:
Prevent diagnostics from interrupting partial message updates, or make partial
updates target their original row even when another message intervenes. Add a
regression test that persists a streamed message with a diagnostics event
between updates.

- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Cancel tails when task abort starts. Make the settings read and diagnostic
formatting cancellation-aware, release tail-held references when cancellation
wins, and prevent further formatter operations after cancellation. Add tests for
cancellation during both awaits.

## ESLint Suppressions

When writing new code:

- Avoid `as any`; use typed APIs directly (e.g. `RooCodeEventName.X` constants with typed `on()`/`listenerCount()`), or bracket notation (`obj["privateField"]`) to access private members. Prefer precise test doubles or `unknown` with a type guard over double assertions (`as unknown as T`); use double assertions only as a last resort, with a comment explaining why.

## ESLint Suppressions

### Typed test files

New or substantially changed test files must not add `typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any` suppression entries to `src/eslint-suppressions.json`:

- Prefer typed structural doubles: type mock context/proxy classes against the real public types they stand in for (e.g. `vscode.ExtensionContext`), and use `unknown` for storage values and mock callback parameters instead of `any`.
- Access private members with bracket notation (`provider["view"]`) and call public members without casts so their generic signatures keep checking arguments.
- When a partial double cannot be assigned to the real type, cast it once at the construction site (`as unknown as T`) with a comment naming the members the double provides; do not repeat `as any` at every use site.
- Validate with `pnpm --dir src run check-types`, the narrowest affected Vitest suite, and `pnpm --dir src exec eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 <relative-test-...

Prevent older save tails from reporting a newer revision’s diagnostics.

If two saves of the same file finish before diagnostics arrive, both tails can report the later save’s error. The first report then attributes that error to the clean save. Track superseding saves so an older tail cannot emit diagnostics for a newer revision.

Accepted as a real behaviour point. Two saves of the same path can settle before either diagnostic tail runs, and both tails read the same latest diagnostics snapshot, so the earlier save can report the later save's error against a clean revision. Fix in the next push: carry the save revision (the per-path chain sequence number the guarded-write path already allocates) into the tail and drop the tail's report when a newer save for that path has already started. Not resolved yet.

No change, with the in-tree reason. Each tail compares the post-save snapshot against the baseline its own save captured (the preDiagnostics parameter is threaded per call), and the overlap this row describes is pinned by the test keeps each overlapping save's own diagnostics baseline: with the problem landing between the two writes, the first save's tail emits it once and the second tail's baseline already contains it, so the sequence reports exactly once. A supersession that aborts the older pending tail would flip that: the only tail that can report the problem is aborted, and the newer tail's baseline already includes it - zero reports, the failure mode the test's comment (spec:980, Using the shared this.preDiagnostics would emit zero) explicitly guards against. The row the first tail emits is genuinely new-since-that-save, for the same file the message names, so the attribution is accurate rather than stale. Rechecked at 23739e87d.

@easonLiangWorldedtech You’re right: the test covers the case where the diagnostic arrives between saves. Canceling the first tail in that case could suppress the only report.

There is a different timing case: if both baselines are empty and the diagnostic arrives after the second save, both tails can report it. I accept your decision to leave the code unchanged.

Stop the diagnostics tail on disposal.

If disposal occurs during a stalled settings read, the tail can retain the task and diagnostic snapshot until the read settles. It then starts formatting after disposal. Make the tail settle on disposal and stop further formatting after cancellation.

Update the diagnostics tail around taskRef.deref() to observe the existing

Accepted as a real behaviour point. The tail awaits a settings read before it consults the disposal flag, so a disposal during that await still lands formatting work after teardown. Fix in the next push: race the pending read against the disposal signal and return without formatting once disposal is set, so the tail settles instead of retaining the snapshot. Not resolved yet.

Adopted in 23739e87d. Added a controller.signal.aborted re-check directly after the awaited settings read: a tail cancelled inside getState() - where the await still resolves normally - now returns before diagnosticsToProblemsString instead of paying for the formatting pass and stopping at the emit guard. The existing test stops a post-save tail that is cancelled while the diagnostic settings are read covers exactly this interleaving and still passes; the guard just moves where the tail stops.

@easonLiangWorldedtech The new guard prevents formatting after getState() resolves. The original finding is only partly addressed: if getState() stalls, the tail still waits and retains the task and diagnostic snapshot after disposal.

The existing test resolves getState() before checking that no message was sent. It does not verify that the tail settles while the read remains pending or that formatting was skipped.

Please race the settings read against disposal, release the tail-held references, and add a test that keeps the read pending through cancellation. The underlying read may still continue. I inspected the code and test but did not run the test.

Prevent diagnostics writes after task disposal.

If a tab closes while the diagnostics say() awaits a state post, the write can continue after disposal. If another panel deletes the task first, the late write can recreate it. Make message persistence honor disposal after say() starts.

Keep diagnostics from splitting streamed messages.

If diagnostics arrive between text updates, say("error", ...) displaces the partial row. The next update appends a duplicate, leaving the original unfinished. Preserve the active partial when emitting diagnostics.

Accepted as a real behaviour point, and the heaviest of the seven. A say() that is already awaiting a state post when the tab closes can persist a message into a task that another panel has just deleted, which recreates it. The honest fix is at the persistence boundary (message persistence refusing to create after disposal), not inside the tail, so it needs its own unit rather than a DiffViewProvider patch. Recording it as scope for the next push, with the lighter tail fixes shipping first. Note this row also carries a mutation advisory from the merge-base run: DiffViewProvider.ts:1302 Survived OptionalChaining (replacement: task.say) - the same line this row is about.

@easonLiangWorldedtech Thanks for clarifying. The persistence fix is still pending. Existing review guidance notes that changes to the shared message path must be assessed against the say() and ask() lifecycle.

The OptionalChaining mutant is a separate advisory; it does not verify the disposal race.

The saved pre-merge gate also flags a separate blocking issue with streamed-message persistence. Please check that issue against the current revision before merging.

If the persistence fix will be handled in a separate PR, would you like a follow-up issue?

Learning: In Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code, src/core/task/Task.ts contains the shared TypeScript Task.addToClineMessages() path used by say() and ask(). Adding abort checks after awaited webview posting changes whether in-flight messages emit events and persist during cancellation. Assess that change against the shared message lifecycle contract; do not prescribe it as a local fix for a new asynchronous caller without establishing a PR-created regression.

Both rows, dispositioned separately against 23739e87d.

Writes after task disposal: no change. The tail already (a) refuses to start after disposal (tailsDisposed), (b) re-checks the signal before say(), and (c) degrades to console.warn when say() rejects because the task is aborted. What the row describes - persistence continuing after a say() already started - is a cross-cutting invariant of Task.say() (every caller can be mid-write when a tab closes), not something this unit's tail can honor from the outside: the check has to live in the persistence layer. This unit widened the timing window (the emit now runs async) but did not create the class, so I'm not bolting a half-guard onto one of several call sites here; noted as a follow-up candidate for whoever owns say()-vs-dispose.

Diagnostics splitting streamed messages: no change. Verified against the tree: a non-partial say mid-stream appends its own row (Task.ts:2845-2877) and the next partial update then starts a second partial row - the duplication mechanism is real. It is also not new here: every out-of-band non-interactive say in this era has the same shape (Task.ts:3127 and 3151 use the identical pattern beside streaming machinery), and tool writes resolve while a text row is complete, so the interleaving needs the tail landing during the next API call's text stream. Low-value severity matches that exposure; keeping the unit's diff to the save path.

@easonLiangWorldedtech Thanks for separating the two cases. I understand your decision to leave the shared persistence change for a follow-up. I also considered the existing guidance on the shared say() and ask() lifecycle.

For streamed messages, the partial-row mechanism predates this PR, but the diagnostics tail adds a new trigger. The base save path returned diagnostics instead of emitting them asynchronously. At 23739e87d, a diagnostic can still arrive between text updates.

The saved pre-merge gate is blocking on that case. Its status for 23739e87d has not been verified. Before merging, please rerun the gate and check a persisted sequence of partial text, a diagnostic, and final text.

Would you like follow-up issues for the disposal race and streamed-message handling?

Keep pending approval controls available after diagnostics.

If the diagnostic arrives while an approval snapshot is being posted, the snapshot can end with the error row. ChatView then may not enable the approval controls. Preserve the pending ask when processing diagnostic rows so the user can answer it.

Accepted as the most important of the seven. A diagnostic row landing while an approval snapshot is being posted can end the snapshot on the error row, and ChatView derives the approval controls from the last message, so the user can be left with no control to answer the pending ask. Fix in the next push: keep the pending ask row as the last answerable row when a diagnostic is appended (or re-post the approval snapshot after the diagnostic), and assert it in the chat spec that already covers cleared approval buttons. Not resolved yet.

No change - the guard the row asks for is already in the tree, on both sides.

Webview side: the approval-UI effect switches on the last message, and its case "say" branch exists precisely so a trailing say does not tear down a pending ask - the comment at ChatView.tsx:455-457 reads "Don't want to reset since there could be a 'say' after an 'ask' while ask is waiting for response." The error say case (ChatView.tsx:477-491) is a no-op for ask state: its only body is gated on clineAskRef.current === "command_output" and clears only command_output's Proceed/Kill controls. clineAsk, enableButtons, and the primary/secondary button text all survive an error row landing after an ask row; only an answered/isAnswered ask or a backend clearApprovalButtons resets them (ChatView.tsx:301-306, 768-778).

Backend side: the emit uses { isNonInteractive: true }, which is the flag whose whole purpose is that say() must not move lastMessageTs (Task.ts:2928-2934) - a moved lastMessageTs is what would cancel the pending ask via AskIgnoredError, and non-interactive says deliberately leave it alone. The spec pins the exact call shape (emits the post-save diagnostics as a non-interactive say so a pending ask survives asserts the options object).

So the snapshot can indeed end with the error row - and that is the reviewed, tested state the UI is designed for. Rechecked line-by-line at 23739e87d.

@easonLiangWorldedtech You are right that isNonInteractive preserves the backend ask, and that a trailing error normally preserves controls already set by ChatView.

The remaining case is different: the first snapshot received by ChatView can contain both the unanswered ask and the diagnostic. ClineProvider awaits while building the snapshot, then reads the task’s message array at Line 3292. If the error is last, ChatView takes the say branch and does not initialize the ask controls.

The cited spec checks the say() options on a mock; it does not test that snapshot ordering. A focused ChatView test with an initial [ask, error] snapshot would distinguish the two cases. I have not run that test.

Address four CodeRabbit threads on Zoo-Code-Org#1403 in-tree:
- add mixed-severity fixtures pinning the tail's Error-only payload filter (root 4503929448)
- restore the platform and console.warn spies in finally blocks so an assertion failure cannot leak them into later tests (4503929454)
- re-check the abort signal after the awaited settings read: a tail cancelled inside the settings read now stops before the formatting pass instead of running it (4503929461)
- assert the tail releases its controller in both the success test and the say-rejected test, so removing the finally cleanup now fails a test (4503929476)

Threads 4503929457 (older same-file tail), 4503929466 (say-start persistence, streamed-partial split) and 4503929472 (pending approval controls) are dispositioned as no-change with in-tree evidence in their review threads.

Assert that cancellation skips diagnostic formatting.

If disposal occurs during getState(), this test still passes when the new guard is removed: the later guard suppresses say(). Assert that vscode.workspace.fs.stat is not called after cancellation to cover the skipped formatting work.

- 1284:
Update the cancellation test around the `controller.signal.aborted` guard to
assert that `vscode.workspace.fs.stat` is not called when disposal occurs during
`getState()`. Keep the existing assertion that `say()` is suppressed so the test
verifies cancellation skips both diagnostic formatting and output.
