Gah - I've been struggling to update this all day. I think that the default R version in ubuntu 24.04 (R 4.3.3) defaults to a reticulate version (1.35.0, I think) that is partially incompatible with numpy 2. The reticulate changelogs suggest that 1.38.0 or greater is required for numpy 2.

I've therefore updated the R install to install reticulate from source, which requires specifying the python location. But it all seems to work, finally!

To get around "'x' must be an array of at least two dimensions" - probably a numpy 2.0 + older reticulate error
