Local multiplayer

Rafael Caetano edited this page Nov 2, 2023 · 2 revisions

The local multiplayer feature is enabled and on par with what the PC version offers. Unfortunately, this means that attempting any kind of connection will most likely fail. However, feel free to try it and report any findings you might encounter by opening a Discussion.

How to use

To use the local multiplayer feature, you simply need 2 (or more) devices connected to the same LAN (such as your home Wi-Fi). You should also be able to communicate with PC versions of melonDS. If you start a lobby for any game on one device, you should be able to see that lobby in other devices. You will also be able to find other users through DS Download Play and Picto Chat. However, attempting a connection will most likely fail.

What else can we expect from this feature?

Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done right now. The DS has very strict timings when it comes to local multiplayer connectivity and using wireless communications will surely cause problems. One possibility would be to try to run 2 melonDS instances on the same device, which should, in theory, provide almost instantaneous communication. However, this is a monumental task and completely out of scope for now. But I won't completely rule out this possibility.

What about online multiplayer?
