Summary

Part 1 of #682: layout.publication builds a finished sheet or figure of the active map in one step. It covers the profiles, the sizing and the footer with wrapping. The locator (part 2), and choosing corners by data coverage with overlap warnings and decimal (part 3), come in later PRs.

layout.publication={"profile": "a4-portrait", "extent": [-46.8, -11.6, -38.5, -2.2],
"title": "PIAUÍ", "subtitle": "Greening and browning of vegetation: NDVI trend, 2001–2025",
"sources": ["NDVI: MOD13Q1 v6.1 (NASA LP DAAC), via the Brazil Data Cube (INPE)", "Boundaries: IBGE 2022"],
  "note": "Only cells with a significant trend (p < 0.05) are coloured."}
  • Profiles (PUBLICATION_PROFILES):
    • Sheets: A4, A3 and A2, portrait or landscape. A sheet has a frame and margin, the title and the subtitle (wrapped), the map, and a footer. The footer has two boxed columns (sources | cartographic reference), with the note and the authorship under them. Sizes scale with the short side ÷ 210 mm.
    • Figures: journal figures 90, 140 and 190 mm wide, as tall as the extent's shape on the map's projection asks (0.45 to 1.3 times the width); thesis figures 160 × 225 and 160 × 110 mm. A figure is the map edge to edge, with a one-line projection and datum note under it at 7 pt. Its title, subtitle, sources and note belong in the caption, so they are left out, and warnings in the result says so.
  • The map frame:
    • The extent (or the view) is fitted with fit_scale, then the scale is rounded up to two significant figures, so the extent still fits (round_scale).
    • The graticule step comes from the extent: the smallest of 0.01° to 30° that draws at most five lines across (grid_step). It is labelled on every edge of a sheet, and on the bottom and left of a figure.
    • The frame faces north, whatever the view's bearing.
  • Surrounds, in fixed corners for now (part 3 chooses them by data coverage), each on a pale box and clear of the graticule's labels, which are drawn inside the frame:
    • the north arrow at the top right;
    • the legend at the bottom left, sized to what it lists;
    • the scale bar at the bottom right, with the numeric scale ({scale}) under it.
    • A legend too long for its corner is clipped as before, and the result warns.
  • Text that fits: the footer, subtitle and note are measured with the layout's own font and wrapped to their box. The footer grows to hold them. If it would leave the map less than 40 mm (on A4, scaled with the sheet like every size: 80 mm on A2), the command refuses and says what to shorten. A fixed-height figure is refused below 40 mm of map.
  • Tokens: {projection}, {datum} and {grid} are filled when the layout is made.
    • Projection and datum are the two halves of an EPSG name (SIRGAS 2000 / UTM zone 23S), else the projection's name over WGS 84.
    • {date}, {scale} and the other dynamic tokens stay live.
    • The reference defaults to "Projection: {projection}" and "Datum: {datum} · Graticule: {grid}".
    • The authorship defaults to "Made with RustGIS · {date}".
    • headings renames the two columns.
  • One layout each: every element is an ordinary one, editable and saved with the project. Running the command again with another profile adds another layout and leaves the first alone.
  • UI: Home › New Layout › Publication Layout lists the profiles, and makes one with the map's name as the title. A dialog for the texts can follow; for now they're edited on the page like any text element.
  • Render:
    • report::width_mm and report::wrap (the report's greedy wrap) are now public, so the engine measures with the layout's font.
    • layout::line_pitch_mm gives the line spacing text_block draws at.
    • legend() now draws from legend_rows. That same list feeds a new legend_size_mm, so the drawing and the size can't drift.
    • frame_render_scale gives the renderer's scale for a frame, as the layout's legend uses it.
  • Docs: a "Publication layouts" entry in layouts.md, and step 2 of the assistant's print-layout skill.

Not in this PR (parts 2 and 3 of #682):

  • the locator (a globe or an inset);
  • choosing corners by data coverage, overlap warnings and decimal.

Testing

  • publication_layouts_fit_their_pages (engine) builds every profile over Piauí with a long source line, and checks:

    • every element on the page;
    • a two-significant-figure scale within 10% of the fitted one that still fits;
    • the 2° graticule;
    • the footer under the map, with the long source wrapped to at least three lines, each measured within its box;
    • the tokens filled, and {date} left live;
    • a figure leaving its title to the caption, and a one-column figure taller than wide over Piauí;
    • each layout exported to PNG.

It also checks the steps for a city and the world, step_text, round_scale, and the refusals: an unknown profile, a malformed extent, and a footer that leaves the map no room.

  • legends_leave_out_what_the_frame_does_not_draw (render) now also checks that legend_size_mm holds what the legend draws, to within a row, for the drawn classes and for every class.

  • cargo fmt --all --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo xtask layers are clean.

  • rustgis-engine 266 passed (3 ignored), rustgis-render 108 and rustgis-ui-egui's unit tests 243 passed.

    • 25 of the 54 UI smoke tests (tests/smoke.rs, --test-threads=1) fail on this Windows machine with or without this change. On a branch at main d5910de the same 25 fail, the first with "No nodes found: New Bookmark". So that's this machine, not the new menu; CI runs them.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

…ed to its page (opengeos#682, part 1)

layout.publication builds a finished A4/A3/A2 sheet (frame, title, subtitle,
the map at a round scale with a graticule, a footer of two boxed columns with
a note and authorship, every text wrapped with the layout's font) or a journal
or thesis figure (the map edge to edge, its texts left to the caption).
The legend is sized to what it lists through legend_rows/legend_size_mm,
shared with the drawing. Home > New Layout > Publication Layout lists the
profiles.

Code review

The layout.publication command, the legend refactor in the renderer and the ribbon menu look sound overall. I found two edge-case bugs and a few smaller points. I read the diff and the surrounding code only; I didn't build or run the tests.

Bugs

  • Sheet title isn't wrapped (crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs:471). The title gets a one-line box, while the subtitle, note and footer are measured and wrapped. A long title, such as a long map name from the ribbon menu, overflows the frame. Confidence: medium.
  • Fixed-height figures have no room check (crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs:540). For thesis-* profiles, fh = page_h - note_h has no guard like the sheet's "no room" error. A long reference can make fh zero or negative, which puts elements off the page and gives fit_scale a non-positive height. Confidence: medium.

Security

  • Nothing found. Extents are validated as finite and in range, text length and list length are capped, and unique_name handles the layout name.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. Wrapping is bounded by the 2000-character and 50-item caps.

Quality

  • The ribbon menu always switches to the Publish tab, even when layout.publication fails (let _ = app.run(...)). Confidence: low.
  • tl!(*label) is applied to profile labels that come from a runtime table, so they won't be in the translation catalogs. The AGENTS.md says a missing entry shows in English, so this is acceptable. Confidence: low.
  • The for (k, given) loop shadows the outer scale factor k. It works, but it is confusing. Confidence: low.
  • The legend refactor into legend_rows keeps the old drawing behaviour, and the new test covers it.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap or panic! in non-test code, and layout.publication is a command registered in the engine. The new Publish › Layout command shows up in the ribbon.
  • I couldn't tell from the diff whether hostile_params_never_panic covers the new command automatically. If it runs only an explicit list, add layout.publication to it.

Code review

I read the whole diff and the surrounding source. I found no crash, security or layering problems, only minor correctness and quality issues. I couldn't build or run the tests here.

Bugs

  • Custom headings (inline comment on layout.rs:503, ~75% confidence). The values are used raw as element names ("{head} Box" and so on), are not passed through fill, and are drawn as a single uppercased line that is never wrapped or measured. A long heading overflows its box. An empty or duplicate heading gives odd or colliding element names. A renamed heading also breaks the Sources / Cartographic reference names that the test and the skill rely on.
  • Layout can overlap (~40%). The legend (bottom-left) and the scale box (bottom-right) are sized independently. On a narrow figure such as figure-1col (90 mm), the legend can be as wide as 45% of the frame and the scale box at least 25 mm wide, so they can collide. The north arrow and legend can also collide when the frame is short. The PR defers overlap checks to part 3, so this is noted, not blocking.
  • Warning on every figure from the menu (~50%). The ribbon always passes title, and figures drop the title, so each figure made from the menu returns a "title goes in the caption" warning. The UI discards it, so the user never sees it. It is harmless, but the menu could skip title for figure profiles.

Security

  • Nothing found. Text inputs are capped (2000 characters per text, 50 per list), the extent is validated as finite and in range, and the code has no unwrap, indexing or unsafe outside tests.

Performance

  • sync_sources and legend_size_mm run once per command, which is fine. aspect() makes about 132 projections, which is negligible.
  • sync_sources mutates the active map as a side effect (~30%). The new layout isn't created if the command errors earlier, but the sync happens just before the push, so nothing is left half-done.

Quality

  • PUBLICATION_PROFILES is a 5-tuple of (&str, &str, bool, f64, f64), which is hard to read. A small struct would document the "height 0 follows the map shape" rule better.
  • The new publication function is about 230 lines. The sheet-footer building could be split into its own function.
  • PUBLICATION_PROFILES entries are shown in the menu through tl!(*label) with a non-literal. This is fine given the repo's policy that missing catalog entries fall back to English, but those labels won't be extracted if extraction relies on literals.
  • The refactor of legend() into legend_rows, plus the shared legend_size_mm, is clean. It avoids drift between drawing and sizing, and the test now covers it.

AGENTS.md

  • Never-crash rules appear to be met in non-test code. The hostile-params test covers the new command automatically.
  • The interface text in the ribbon uses tl!.
  • Docs and the assistant skill are updated.
  • No new dependencies and no assets.

Code review

I read the diff and the surrounding code. I did not build the code or run the tests. The PR looks solid and I found nothing blocking. It follows the "never crash" rules: there is no unwrap, expect or panic, inputs are validated, and text length and list size are capped. The new ribbon menu uses tl!, and the render changes are shared between drawing and sizing, so the two can't drift apart.

Bugs

  • Unexpanded {date} and {scale} are measured when wrapping (crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs:464). The tokens stay live, so wrapping measures {date} (6 characters) instead of the date actually drawn (about 10). A right-aligned author line wrapped close to the box width could overflow slightly. Confidence: low to medium.

Security

  • Nothing found. Parameters are bounded: the extent is validated, the profile is looked up from a fixed list, text is capped at 2000 characters, and lists are capped at 50.

Performance

  • Nothing notable. legend_size_mm and aspect are cheap. sync_sources mutates the session map, but exports already do the same.

Quality

  • Empty column box (crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs:530). If only one footer column has text, both boxes are still drawn, so an empty "SOURCES" box can appear. The docs don't say this is intended. Confidence: low.
  • Double fill. The titled closure calls fill and then wrap calls it again. This is harmless but redundant. Confidence: high, and trivial.

AGENTS.md

  • Layering, wasm and translation rules all look respected: the engine uses crate::render, there is no std::time, and the menu labels go through tl!.
  • I did not check that the hostile-params test covers layout.publication. The command is registered, so it should be included automatically.

Code review

I read the whole diff and posted three inline comments. I found no definite bugs. I did not build the code or run the tests.

Bugs

  • None found. I checked layout.publication for these cases:
    • Extent: inverted, NaN or out-of-range extents are rejected.
    • Page fit: the figure height and the "no room" cases are handled.
    • Scale: round_scale rounds up, so the extent still fits.
    • Legend: the legend refactor keeps the old drawing behaviour. It now stops at the rectangle's bottom edge, with a small tolerance so a legend sized to its rows keeps the last one.

Security / Performance

  • texts_of accepts up to 50 texts of 2000 characters per field. wrap_with breaks an over-wide unbroken word by measuring every growing prefix. Hostile input could therefore cost a lot of font measuring. A tighter per-field or total cap would help. Confidence: low-medium. (Inline comment on crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs, line 383.)

Quality

  • publication calls s.map_mut().sync_sources(...) on the active map just to size the legend. That changes the map as a side effect of creating a layout. Please confirm it is safe with undo and dirty tracking. Confidence: low-medium. (Inline comment on crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs, line 394.)

AGENTS.md

  • tl!(profile.label) in crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs (line 947) passes a non-literal. The labels are defined in the engine crate, so they probably won't reach the translation catalogs. Confidence: medium. (Inline comment.)
  • The new code has no unwrap, expect or panic! outside tests and no unsafe, as the repo requires. The new command has a regression test. Whether the command is covered by hostile_params_never_panic was not checked.

Code review

This PR adds a layout.publication command, a ribbon menu for it, a faster word-breaking wrap_with, and legend_size_mm. I read the whole diff and some of the surrounding code. I did not build the project or run the tests.

I found no crash risks. The command validates its inputs, clamps text length and list size, and has no unwrap in non-test code.

Bugs

  • Heading tokens are uppercased (crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs, ~line 280). fill(&head).to_uppercase() turns a dynamic token left in a headings entry into {DATE}, which the layout never fills, so it prints literally. The fill call is also redundant because wrap_as fills again. Confidence: medium.

Security

  • Nothing found. Text lengths, list sizes and the extent are bounded. The halving word-break keeps a 2000-character word cheap, and a regression test covers it.

Performance

  • No problems found. wrap_with now takes a few measures per line instead of one per character.

Quality

  • sync_sources side effect (layout.rs, ~line 394). Calling s.map_mut().sync_sources(...) from this command mutates the active map and can start streamed reads. This is probably fine, since export does the same, but check it for undo, the dirty flag and the web build. Confidence: low.
  • Ribbon labels are not translatable (crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs, ~line 901). tl!(profile.label) passes a non-literal, so catalog extraction likely misses the 11 profile labels and they stay English. Confidence: low to medium.

AGENTS.md

  • The change follows the "never crash" rule, with no unsafe and no unwrap in non-test code.
  • The unit test covers all profiles, and the new command is covered by the existing hostile-params sweep, which I did not confirm.
  • I did not check cargo xtask ci, which AGENTS.md requires before commit.

On the uppercased heading tokens: fixed in 9193558. A heading is filled first, so {projection} reads in capitals too. It's then put in capitals by capitals, which leaves any {token} as it is, so a live {date} stays {date} and the layout fills it when it draws. The test's heading now holds {date} and checks it reads FONTES DOS DADOS, {date}.

Code review

I read the whole diff, checked that tl! accepts a non-literal, and posted one inline comment. I found nothing serious. I did not build the code or run the tests.

Bugs

  • Unmatched { in capitals (low confidence). capitals in crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs keeps the case of everything after a lone { until a }. A heading like "Data {2024" therefore stays in its original case to the end of the text. No test covers an unmatched brace. This is the inline comment.

Security

  • No issues. Input is bounded: texts are cut to 2000 characters, lists to 50 entries, and extent and profile are validated. wrap_with now breaks a long word by halving, so a hostile long word needs few measurements. There is a test for this.

Performance

  • No issues. The new legend_size_mm and legend_rows reuse the drawing path, so the size and the drawn legend stay consistent.

Quality

  • legend_rows is a good refactor. One test checks the size calculation against the drawn ink, and a second pins it at two rows.
  • The new tests use unwrap() and panic!, which is fine because they are test code.

AGENTS.md

  • The ribbon labels go through tl!, and the catalogs don't have to be updated in the PR.
  • layout.publication is a command and opens no dialogs.
  • No unwrap or panic in the new non-test code.
  • There are no new assets or dependencies.
  • The std::time rule is not touched.

Code review

I read the whole diff and the surrounding source. I did not build or run anything. The PR adds layout.publication with its profiles, a legend sizing helper, a bisecting wrap_with, and a ribbon menu. I found no definite bugs.

Bugs

  • None confirmed. I checked these specifically:
    • round_scale rounds up, so the extent still fits.
    • The capitals slicing is safe because { is one byte.
    • A figure with an empty reference list gets a zero-height element that still fits the page.
    • The wrap_with binary search stays in bounds; its monotonic-width assumption is reasonable.
    • Extent validation rejects non-finite values and out-of-range degrees.
  • Low confidence: sync_sources mutates the session map before the layout is pushed. The code comment says nothing after that can fail, and I agree. If undo for layout.publication only snapshots layouts, the map sync won't be undone. I did not check how the command registry handles undo for this command.

Security

  • None. Inputs are clamped: texts are capped at 2000 characters and 50 items, and extents are range-checked. There is no unwrap or panic! in non-test code. The long-word regression test also covers a hostile 2000-character word.

Performance

  • The wrap_with rewrite replaces a per-character measure with halving, which is a clear improvement. The new a_long_word_breaks_in_few_measures test covers it.
  • Nit: the drawn closure re-runs nine replace calls on every width measure. That is fine at this scale.

Quality

  • Inline comment posted on crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs:947. tl!(profile.label) takes a runtime value, so the profile labels may never reach the translation catalogs (confidence: low-medium).
  • publication is about 300 lines, with sheet and figure layout in one function. Splitting it into sheet_layout, figure_layout and the overlay placement would make it easier to maintain. This is optional.

AGENTS.md

  • The never-crash rules look followed. Please confirm that hostile_params_never_panic covers layout.publication with junk parameters; it runs every registered command, so it likely does.
  • Please run cargo xtask ci and the wasm build. crate::render::... and web_time aren't involved, so wasm looks fine.
  • The new strings use tl!, and the catalogs don't need updating.

Code review

I found no bugs or security problems. I read the diff only; I couldn't build or run the tests here.

Bugs

  • None found. I checked:
    • Hostile input: layout.publication bounds every field. Text is capped at 2000 characters, lists at 50, and the extent and profile are validated.
    • Slicing in capitals: it slices only after the end > 1 guard.
    • Word wrapping: the new halving search in wrap_with always makes progress.
    • Undo: the legend sync that changes the session's map is covered by an undo test.

Security

  • None. Nothing in the diff does file or network access beyond the existing export path.

Performance

  • The wrap_with rewrite replaces one measure per character with a halving search. That is an improvement, and it has a regression test.

Quality

  • ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs:960 (confidence: moderate, nit). The ribbon's match repeats each profile label from PUBLICATION_PROFILES. The labels can drift apart, and the fallback tl!(profile.label) is not a literal. I suggested a small drift test in an inline comment.

AGENTS.md

  • Commands are registered through CommandSpec, there is no unwrap or panic in non-test code, and the new text goes through tl!.
  • The extent is passed through web_time-free code, so wasm is unaffected.
  • I couldn't confirm cargo xtask ci or the layers check passed.

Code review

This PR adds layout.publication, with 11 profiles (sheets and journal or thesis figures), and a ribbon menu for it. It also adds a legend_size_mm helper and a faster word-break in wrap_with, plus docs and tests. I read the full diff. I did not run the build or the tests.

Bugs

  • Wrong warning on figures (confidence: medium, low severity). crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs:637 uses asked("author"), which is true for "author": "" or []. Those are the documented way to leave the author line out. A figure then warns that "author goes in the figure's caption … left out" when nothing was given. I posted an inline comment.

Security

  • Nothing found. I checked the following:
    • Free-text fields are capped at 2000 characters and 50 items.
    • The extent is validated as finite and within bounds.
    • Line and word counts in wrap_with are bounded.
    • The new binary-search word-break replaces a per-character loop, so a hostile 2000-character word stays cheap.
    • There is no unwrap, expect or panic in the non-test code.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. The legend sizing syncs streamed sources once. The greedy wrap re-measures the growing line for each word, which is acceptable at the bounded sizes.

Quality

  • ribbon.rs uses tl!(profile.label) as a fallback, which is not a literal. If tl! needs a string literal, this won't compile. If it accepts a runtime string, the catalogs can't pick the label up. The test only covers profiles that have an entry in publication_label. (Low confidence, since I didn't confirm how tl! is defined.)
  • publication is a very long function, about 300 lines. Splitting out the sheet layout and the figure layout would make it easier to maintain.
  • The unit scaling in legend_size_mm (points to mm through 25.4 / 96) relies on the LEGEND_* constants being in the same unit as the drawing. The new render test covers this.

AGENTS.md

  • The change follows the guidelines I could check from the diff: no unwrap in non-test code, no new dependencies, and strings wrapped for translation.
  • The ribbon labels and the docs follow the repo conventions.
  • There is a regression test for the long-word break, and the new command is covered by the engine tests.
  • I could not verify that hostile_params_never_panic covers layout.publication. It should if it iterates the whole command registry.
  • I did not run cargo xtask ci or the wasm build.

Code review

I found no correctness bugs and one minor localisation point. I did not build the code or run the tests. I read the whole diff and checked tl! in crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/mod.rs and the ribbon call site.

Bugs

  • None found. I looked at:
    • round_scale, step_text, capitals (its brace and slice handling), and datum_of.
    • The extent validation, the page-fit arithmetic in the sheet and figure branches, and the "no room" error paths.
    • The binary-search word breaking in wrap_with, which is cheaper than the old per-character loop and bounded by the existing take(2000) and take(5000) limits.
    • The legend refactor into legend_rows and legend_size_mm, which keeps the drawing logic the same.
    • Undo of the sync_sources side effect, which the new tests cover.

Security

  • None found. The command reads its parameters defensively:
    • Text fields are capped at 2000 characters, and lists at 50 entries.
    • The extent is range-checked, and the profile comes from a fixed list.
    • There are no unwrap, expect or panic calls in non-test code, and no new dependencies.

Performance

  • None found. The wrapping change reduces measuring cost for very long words.

Quality

  • Minor (about 50% confidence): in layout.publication, the drawn closure replaces live tokens with fixed sample widths such as {scale} as 1:10,000,000. A token with a wider real value could still overflow its box. This is an approximation, and the docs don't say so.
  • Minor (about 40% confidence): a sheet's title and subtitle are not trimmed. Only empty values are dropped.

AGENTS.md

  • crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs:978: the engine's English warning strings are shown in a toast without translation. I posted this as an inline comment (about 60% confidence).
  • Interface text otherwise uses tl! literals, and a test keeps the profile labels in step with the engine's.
  • Docs and the assistant skill are updated. No assets or dependencies were added.
  • Regression tests cover the new code, including hostile input to the new command.

Code review

I found no correctness bugs in layout.publication, the render changes or the menu. I read the engine command, the render refactors, the ribbon menu, the tests and the docs. I did not build the code or run the tests.

Bugs

  • None found.
    • Input handling looks safe: text length and list size are capped, the extent and profile are validated, and wrap_with now splits long words by binary search, so a hostile 2000-character word stays cheap.
    • capitals slices only at char boundaries, round_scale and step_text handle odd values, and legend_rows / legend keep the old clipping behavior.

Security

  • None found.

Performance

  • None found. The drawn token-substitution closure allocates on every measure, but the binary-search wrap keeps the number of measures small (confidence: low).

Quality

  • In figure profiles the reference line is placed at x = 0 over the full page width, so its first glyph touches the paper edge. An inset of about 1 mm would avoid that (confidence: low, design nit). I left an inline comment.
  • The ribbon shows the engine's English warnings as separate untranslated toasts. This may be acceptable because the engine strings are data, but it is an interface-text question (confidence: low). I left an inline comment.
  • publication() is about 300 lines in a single function. Splitting it into sheet and figure helpers, and into the surrounds (north arrow, legend, scale bar), would make it easier to maintain (confidence: medium, not blocking).
  • The profile labels are duplicated in the engine and in publication_label in ribbon.rs. A test keeps the two in sync, which is a reasonable trade-off for translation.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic! appears in non-test code.
  • The command is registered in crates/engine/src/cmd, and the UI dispatches it by id.
  • Menu labels use tl!.
  • The change adds no new dependencies or assets.
  • There is a regression test for hostile input, plus tests for undo and for a streamed layer.
  • Confidence that the guidelines are met: high. I did not run cargo xtask ci, so the PR's CI results are the check.

Code review

I read the full diff and the surrounding code, but did not build it or run any tests. I found no blocking issues, so I posted no inline comments.

Bugs

  • None found. I checked these:
    • wrap_with halving search: fits starts at 1, so the slice is never empty and the loop always ends.
    • capitals and round_scale: no unchecked slicing, and non-finite or non-positive input is guarded.
    • Hostile parameters: text and heading lists are capped at 50 items of 2000 characters each. The extent is validated, and profile is matched against the known ids.
    • Sheet and figure layout: both return Err when the texts leave the map under 40 mm of room.
  • Low confidence: the legend is sized from legend_size_mm before the layout exists, and s.map_mut().sync_sources(...) changes the session's map outside the undo path. The code comment says this is deliberate, to match an export. It needs a check that layout.publication undoes cleanly.
  • Low confidence: the legend box is built from the legend row text measured at 9 and 8.5 pt, and the legend itself draws at *1.33 px. The new test covers this to within 0.3 to 1.5 mm. A font that falls back (missing glyphs) could still clip the last characters, but that is minor.

Security

  • None. Inputs are bounded, with no file or network access and no unsafe. The new code has no unwrap or expect. The only ones are in tests.

Performance

  • The wrap_with change from a per-character scan (quadratic) to a halving search is a real improvement. a_long_word_breaks_in_few_measures covers it.
  • aspect makes about 132 projection calls, which is negligible.

Quality

  • Profile labels are written twice, in PUBLICATION_PROFILES and in publication_label (ribbon.rs). The new test keeps them in sync, which is acceptable. unwrap_or_else(|| tl!(profile.label)) passes a non-literal to tl!, so check that the macro accepts it. If it does not, the fallback entries will never reach the catalogs. Confidence: low.
  • publication is a function of about 300 lines. Splitting the sheet and figure branches into helpers would make it easier to read. This is a nit.
  • On a figure, the default author text is silently dropped, while the other texts a figure drops each add a warning. This is consistent but could surprise someone. This is a nit.

AGENTS.md

  • Everything is a command: layout.publication is a CommandSpec, and the ribbon calls it by id. ✔
  • Never crash: no panics in non-test code, and params are validated. The hostile_params_never_panic test should cover the new command, since it enumerates the registry. I didn't confirm that. ✔
  • Interface text: the menu labels use tl!. Command messages stay in English, as for other commands. ✔
  • Layering: the engine uses only render and map, and the ribbon only reads the engine's PUBLICATION_PROFILES. ✔
  • Docs and assistant skill are updated. No new assets or dependencies.

Code review

Nothing I'd block on. I read the diff and the surrounding source; I did not build or run anything. The only runtime-safety issue I found is a minor performance one (item 1 under Performance).

Bugs

  • None found. Checked:
    • The extent validation: finite values, ordered bounds, and ±180/±90 limits.
    • round_scale rounding up, and the grid_step and step_text boundaries.
    • Figure sizing when height is 0, and the 40 mm minimum for the map.
    • The footer arithmetic, including the case where one column is empty.
    • The legend's clamp against the scale-bar box.
    • The command's state change to the session map: sync_sources runs after the last refusal point, and the tests cover undo.

Security / input hardening

  • No concerns. Every text field is capped at 2000 characters, lists at 50 entries, and wrap_with still limits lines and words. The new wrap_with bisection removes the quadratic cost of splitting a long word, and a test covers it. There is no unwrap, expect or indexing in the non-test code. Confidence: high.

Performance

  1. drawn runs nine String::replace passes on every width measurement made while wrapping. With 50 sources of 2000 characters this does a lot of repeated work, though still bounded. Fine for now. Confidence: low.

Quality

  1. ribbon.rs: tl!(profile.label) is a fallback for a profile with no publication_label entry, so it is not a literal and the catalog tooling can't extract it. The guard test covers the current profiles. Confidence: low.
  2. The layout.publication labels are duplicated between the engine and publication_label in the ribbon. The test ties them together, and the comment explains why. Acceptable.
  3. step_text(0.02) gives 72″ and 0.01 gives 36″. This is correct but unusual next to minutes, so a grid of 1′12″ would read more naturally. Nit. Confidence: low.
  4. fill is applied to the text and then again inside wrap_as, so a filled value that itself contains {datum} would be filled a second time. This is harmless in practice. Confidence: low.
  5. The publication function is about 310 lines. Splitting it into sheet_layout, figure_layout and surrounds would make it easier to extend for the planned parts 2 and 3. Confidence: medium that this is worth doing.

AGENTS.md

  • Never crash: followed. The new code has no panicking constructs, and unwrap appears only in tests. hostile_params_never_panic should cover the new command through the registry, but I couldn't run it. Confidence: medium.
  • Wasm: the new code uses no std::time or file I/O. The test writes to a temp directory, which is fine for tests.
  • Translatable text: menu labels use tl!. Engine warnings and errors are English strings, as they are for other commands.
  • Layering: the engine reaches crate::render and the ribbon reaches rustgis_engine, both allowed.
  • Assets and docs: no assets were added. The docs and the assistant skill are updated.

From the latest review, in bc0fcc6:

  • Performance: the measuring stand-ins (drawn) now return early for text with no {, so most measures make no replacements.
  • Graticule step text: a step that isn't whole minutes reads in minutes and seconds (0.02° → 1′12″). Under a minute it stays in seconds (36″). Both are tested.
  • Left as they are: splitting publication into sheet, figure and surround helpers belongs with parts 2 and 3, where the locator and the corner placement need those seams. The fallback tl!(profile.label) only serves a profile added without a literal, which every_publication_profile_is_named_by_a_literal refuses.

Code review

I read the full diff and checked the macro and layering context. I found no defects that need a change before merge. I couldn't build or run anything here, so the review is by reading only, and I posted no inline comments.

Bugs

None found. What I checked:

  • Scale rounding. round_scale rounds up to two significant figures with a 1e-9 guard against float noise. The tests confirm the extent still fits at the rounded scale.
  • Graticule step text. step_text handles degrees, minutes, and minutes plus seconds. 0.02 gives 1′12″ and 0.01 gives 36″.
  • Long-word wrapping. The bisection in wrap_with is bounded. over starts at the character count, fits at 1, and the loop ends when they are one apart. Each piece makes progress, so it can't loop forever. A hostile 2000-character word costs only a few measures per line, and a test pins that.
  • capitals. It indexes with rest[1..end] and rest[..=end] at byte offsets, but { and } are single-byte, so there is no UTF-8 boundary risk.
  • Page fit. In figures, the Reference text ends at fh + note_h, which is at most the page height. In sheets, frame_bottom - frame_top < 40k returns an error, so the map never gets negative room. The test checks every element of every profile against its page.
  • Undo. The command mutates the map through sync_sources. The comment says it does so only after the last fallible step, and the new streamed-layer test checks that undo restores the map.
  • Input handling. Texts are cut at 2000 characters and lists at 50. extent is validated as finite and in range, and profile is type-checked. The command returns errors rather than panicking, and the hostile-params test should cover it.

Security

None. There is no new I/O or network use, and all parameters are bounded.

Performance

  • Low confidence, minor: wrap_with re-measures the growing line (format!("{line} {word}")) for every word, which is O(n²) in line length. The 2000-character cap per field and the 50-item list cap keep it small.

Quality

  • Low confidence, nit: in ribbon.rs, tl!(profile.label) is a non-literal tl!, used as the fallback for a profile that has no literal. The unit test makes sure every current profile has a literal, so the fallback is just a safety net. It is acceptable.
  • Low confidence, nit: legend_size_mm converts using 96 dpi constants (25.4 / 96.0) and LEGEND_ROW duplicated in the layout code. A shared helper would avoid drift. The render test covers it for now.
  • The publication function is about 300 lines. It reads well and is commented, but splitting the sheet and figure branches into helpers would make it easier to maintain.

AGENTS.md

  • Never crash: no unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code. Indexing uses get() or is guarded.
  • Everything is a command: layout.publication is registered in cmd/layout.rs, and the ribbon calls it by id.
  • Translatable text: the profile names go through tl!. The new catalog strings are the maintainer's job per the guidelines.
  • Wasm: render and engine use no std::time. The one test-only std::fs use (tests.rs) is fine.
  • Docs and skill: docs/user-guide/layouts.md and the assistant's print-layout skill are updated.
  • Regression tests: tests were added for the new command, the streamed layer under undo, and the long-word wrap.
