This fixes some parsing errors can that can arise.
Now that I am opening this PR I just noticed there are others like it (#137, #135) as well as several issues which I found (#143). Not sure how to proceed, but in case anyone finds it useful, this is fairly robust (I haven't tested the other solutions).
