Summary

Improves error handling in the deduce_base function to prevent crashes when remote branches are missing or merge-base fails.

Changes

  • Added check for remote branch existence
  • Added graceful error handling for merge-base failures
  • Added clear error messages to help users resolve issues

Error Examples

  • Missing branch: "ERROR: Remote branch 'origin/main' does not exist"
  • Merge-base failure: "ERROR: Failed to find a merge base"

Testing

Verified the tool exits gracefully with appropriate messages when remote branch is missing or merge-base fails.

The code looks good to me, but I'm just a user of the project who wanted to see this improve. I'm not a maintainer. 😃
