Difference between UI Patterns and Single Directory Components?

Best way I can describe it is that SDC is a child of UI Patterns. UI Patterns was too large a feature to probably ever get adopted into Drupal core so a portion of it was broken off and merged into core.

With SDC now part of core, UI Patterns 2.x is being redesigned to work with SDC as well as build additional features on top of it.
