This pull request adds an option to allow Nemo to display real filenames - a feature I’ve personally wanted for a long time, and one that others have requested as well:

This also solves issue of having multiple files appear with the same name, in some cases, and other issues.

The feature is optional and disabled by default, so it won’t affect existing users. It can be enabled with:

gsettings set org.nemo.preferences show-real-filename true

Please, please implement this. A file manager that is unable to display (nor allow editing of) a file's name is a joke.

Sorry we are too busy reading spammy comments like yours, maybe if there were less it would leave us more time to do code reviews and merges!!

I apologize for my rude and ungrateful comment. It was made in frustration. I've also recognized a need to adjust my expectations about a lot of the software on Mint.

No thanks, we're satisfied with how desktop files are handled currently. They're special files and most users count on their current behavior. This also wouldn't be the correct place to implement this. I also am against adding a 'hidden' option only a handful of people might use or know about.

A desktop file is considered trusted and reads as its display name if:

  • It's executable by you.
  • It lives in a system data directory (XDG_DATA_DIRS).
  • It's a symbolic link pointing to one of those directories (this is new behavior for the upcoming release).

Also new will be the ability to display/edit the desktop file if it's not currently trusted - alongside 'launch anyway' and 'mark as trusted' (if you're the owner).
