docs(cloud): open signup at sign-in, and refused invitation edits - #1219
Conversation
Two user-visible behaviours from layer5io/meshery-cloud#6002 were missing from the User Invitations page. The open signup invitation is applied on every sign-in through the organization's own address, not only at first-time registration, so an existing Layer5 Cloud account that has never been a member joins on that sign-in. It is applied only to non-members, which is why an admin's deliberate removal of a role or team is not undone by the next login and why one person is counted once against the quota. When the invitation is disabled, expired, at quota, or does not list the person's address, they sign in with no membership and see no error - the four things to check when open signup appears to add nobody. An invitation edit that matches no live invitation of the organization, which a stale edit dialog reaches after another admin deletes the invitation, now reports that it was not found rather than reporting success, and refusals state their reason. Complements #1215, which documents the manage-invitations permission on the open signup marker and the precedence of the Edit Organization picker; no overlapping lines. 📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe user invitations documentation now explains concurrent invitation deletion feedback and how the default open signup invitation applies during sign-in. ChangesUser Invitations Documentation

Review point: the four ineligibility conditions describe what happens to someone who is not yet a member. An existing member keeps the membership, roles, and teams they already have whatever the open signup invitation's state, so say so rather than leaving the outcome unscoped. Review loop closed. Every comment on this PR has been answered; nothing is left open. The one review finding. The inline note asking that the no-membership outcome be scoped to non-members was correct and is fixed in 697ed2b, with a reply on the thread. The automated walkthrough's Merge Risk line raises the same point, and it was computed against Preview verified, not just built. The first publish attempt was queued behind concurrent Pages deployments and 404'd. It is live now and carries all four new passages, with the User Management cross-reference correctly rewritten to the preview path: https://docs.layer5.io/pr-preview/pr-1219/cloud/concepts/identity-and-security/users/user-invitations/ Re-checked against what meshery-cloud#6002 currently carries, since its head moved after this page was written (now Two things landed on #6002 after this page was written. Neither makes anything here false, and both are recorded rather than quietly absorbed:
Not merging. Merge authority for this PR has not been given, so it is left open for a maintainer. |
What
Adds the two user-visible behaviours from layer5io/meshery-cloud#6002 that the User Invitations page does not yet carry: how the open signup invitation is applied at sign-in, and what an administrator now sees when an invitation edit is refused.
One file, additive prose only, no restructuring:
content/en/cloud/concepts/identity-and-security/users/user-invitations/index.mdRelationship to #1215
#1215 is already open against this same page for the same upstream change, covering the Manage Invitations permission on the open signup marker (both directions) and the precedence of the Edit Organization picker over
isDefault. This PR deliberately does not repeat those facts and touches no line #1215 touches, so the two apply in either order. If #1215 is closed rather than merged, its two facts still need a home here.Every user-visible change in #6002, and where it landed
isDefaultis persisted and read, so the open signup control finally takes effectisDefaultas working. #6002 makes the existing text true rather than stale, so manufacturing a change here would be noise.isDefaultpreserves the stored valueisDefaultOn the API contract, corrected
The brief for this work said a newly returned 404 is undeclared in the pinned
meshery/schemascontract. Checked directly againstschemas/constructs/v1beta3/invitation/api.ymlat v1.3.44:updateInvitationdeclares200/400/401/404/500, so the 404 is in the contract. The undeclared status is the 403 oncreateInvitationandupdateInvitation, and it is already escalated upstream: meshery/schemas#1173 with the fix open at meshery/schemas#1174.Nothing here states an HTTP status code either way. These pages describe what an administrator sees, so the refusal is written as behaviour ("reports that the invitation was not found", "reports the specific reason") and no undeclared contract is asserted as fact.
Testing
npm run buildclean: 1623 pages, no shortcode orreferrors, and the new{{</* alert */>}}and the User Management cross-reference render correctly inpublic/.markdownlinton the changed file before and after: no new rule classes. The only additions areMD013line-length, which every prose line on this page (and the repo) already carries.Summary by CodeRabbit
