I think this documentation should be clarified - I got the impression that validation only starts on fields once the user has clicked Submit. Actually, fields get validated once the user has edited them too. So if you have a "required: minimum 2 characters" field, if the user enters one character and tabs out, an error message will be displayed even though they haven't yet clicked Submit.
