Tattha **khīṇan** ti samucchinnaṃ. **Purāṇan** ti purātanaṃ. **Navan** ti sampati vattamānaṃ. **Natthisambhavan** ti avijjamānapātubhāvaṃ. **Virattacittā** ti vigatarāgacittā. **Āyatike bhavasmin** ti anāgatam addhānaṃ punabbhave. **Te** ti yesaṃ khīṇaṃ purāṇaṃ navaṃ natthisambhavaṃ, ye ca āyatike bhavasmiṃ virattacittā, te khīṇāsavā bhikkhū. **Khīṇabījā** ti ucchinnabījā. **Avirūḷhichandā** ti virūḷhichandavirahitā. **Nibbantī** ti vijjhāyanti. **Dhīrā** ti dhitisampannā. **Yathāyaṃ padīpo** ti ayaṃ padīpo viya.

Kiṃ vuttaṃ hoti? Yaṃ taṃ sattānaṃ uppajjitvā niruddham pi purāṇaṃ atītakālikaṃ kammaṃ taṇhāsinehassa appahīnattā paṭisandhiāharaṇasamatthatāya akhīṇaṃyeva hoti, taṃ purāṇaṃ kammaṃ yesaṃ arahattamaggena taṇhāsinehassa sositattā agginā daḍḍhabījam iva āyatiṃ vipākadānāsamatthatāya khīṇaṃ. Yañ ca nesaṃ buddhapūjādivasena idāni pavattamānaṃ kammaṃ navan ti vuccati, tañca taṇhāpahānen’eva chinnamūlapādapapuppham iva āyatiṃ phaladānāsamatthatāya yesaṃ natthisambhavaṃ, ye ca taṇhāpahānen’eva āyatike bhavasmiṃ virattacittā, te khīṇāsavā bhikkhū “kammaṃ khettaṃ viññāṇaṃ bījan” ti <small>(a. ni. 3.77)</small> ettha vuttassa paṭisandhiviññāṇassa kammakkhayen’eva khīṇattā khīṇabījā. Yo pi pubbe punabbhavasaṅkhātāya virūḷhiyā chando ahosi, tassāpi samudayappahānen’eva pahīnattā pubbe viya cutikāle asambhavena avirūḷhichandā dhitisampannattā dhīrā carimaviññāṇanirodhena yathāyaṃ padīpo nibbuto, evaṃ nibbanti, puna “rūpino vā arūpino vā” ti evamādiṃ paññattipathaṃ accentī ti. Tasmiṃ kira samaye nagaradevatānaṃ pūjanatthāya jālitesu padīpesu eko padīpo vijjhāyi, taṃ dassento āha “yathāyaṃ padīpo” ti.
