"common devices" might be too geneal. How about "wireless routers".
Or "Open Source outdoor cases for off the shelf wireless routers" - but maybe that is too long. :-)

How can a student create such cases for testing? Can 3D printing produce cases of sufficient quality? Or will those cases be be produced by some company?

Will the material be UV resistant? Also, if the surface is not smooth, then moisture might not evaporate easily and dampen the signal.

I think you can name thingiverse and others here as examples.

There is also some open wifi router hardware project for/by libremesh etc. that might need a case. Or the MPPT tracker for solar powered setups. Just an idea.

@mwarning awesome, thank you very much for the advises!

As far as I know comes the LibreRouter with a outdoor case, the MPPT tracker case could be interesting, I'll add that!

I though of 3D printing, most cities/universities got a makerspace kinda thing where prototypes could be printed.

Will the material be UV resistant? Also, if the surface is not smooth, then moisture might not evaporate easily and dampen the signal.

I'm not to familiar with the material but I read that various 3D printed gadgets are durable enough to sustain multiple years outside in sun light.

is this idea ready to be merged?

@andibraeu I'm afraid not. While I liked the idea with 3D printing, the material doesn't seem to last long enough. I'd rewrite the idea to write manuals on how to but a regular device in a outdoor box, but this might be a bit to easy for a GSoC. What do you think?

I also miss the Code part of Google Summer of Code ;)

You could add this as project idea, we do not necessarily need to add only GSoC ideas here.

Hiho,

We have desinged, printed and already deployed modular 3D enclosures for BananaPi R64 & some Mikrotik routers in our Freifunk mesh:

https://github.com/SupraCoNeX/SupraCoNeX_3D_outdoor_enclosure_OpenWrt_Router

Would be nice to get more people involved.
