# Coding Guidelines

Follow conventions as much as possible for quotes, tabs/spaces, etc. as they've been established in the project.

Follow these additional guidelines to ensure your code is clean, maintainable, and adheres to best practices.

## General

- Use TypeScript for all code.

- Use descriptive variable names.
Use camelCase for variables and functions
Use PascalCase for types and interfaces
Use proper capitalization for acronyms
Use auxiliary verbs for boolean states (e.g., isLoading, hasError)
Prefer interfaces over types for object definitions
Avoid enums; use const objects with 'as const' assertion
Define strict types for message passing

## Cloudflare Workers

Optimize for Cloudflare Worker's edge computing environment.
Do not rely on persistent application (in-memory) state across requests.

We have enabled limited compatibility with Node.js, but not all Node APIs are guaranteed to work.

DO NOT use Node.js filesystem APIs (\`fs\`, \`fsSync\`, \`fsPromises\`, etc.) as we do not have access to the filesystem.

DO NOT use \`process.env\` to access environment variables, as we are not in a Node.js environment where \`process\` is defined.

We have some observability in place.
If a logging library is in the project, use it.
Log errors with appropriate context
Include relevant state for debugging

## Hono

When you can, mount route handlers at the route definition,
instead of splitting out into its own function,
as this preserves the type inference that Hono gives us

- Use middleware for reusable logic.
If you want to define middleware in a separate function or file,
use \`createMiddleware\` from Hono to get proper type inference.

- Only validate request inputs when asked to. Use whatever validation library is in the project (zod, joi, etc.). If there is none, ask me to specify one.

- Use environment variables for configuration.
When you add environment variables, you need to add them to the \`Bindings\` type passed as \`new Hono<{ Bindings: Bindings }>()\`.
Then, you can access them in the context parameter of route handlers: \`app.get("/new-route", (c) => { const env = c.env; })\`

- Use \`c.env\` to access environment variables in route handlers, DO NOT use \`process.env\`

- Use pagination for potentially large result sets

- Ensure consistent API response structure

### Database/Drizzle Best Practices

You should use Drizzle to define the database schema and then use the Drizzle query builder to construct queries. This gives us type safe database access.

#### Schema Changes
- Design schemas thoughtfully in \`src/db/schema.ts\`

- Use indexes strategically

- Use Drizzle helpers to define the schemas

- You need to generate and then apply migrations after schema changes.
This happens via package manager scripts. You need to run \`%{package-manager-name} run db:generate\` to update the generated types,
then run \`%{package-manager-name} run db:migrate\` to update the database itself.


#### SQL Query Construction

- Prefer using the drizzle sql query builder over raw sql or the ORM query client.

## Project Setup

- Use %{package-manager-name} for package management
- Use the npm package script \`db:setup\` to create the database, generate the types, migrate the database, and seed the database.
- Distinguish between production and development dependencies

## Database

(D1-specific)
- If you rename a D1 database \`binding\` in \`wrangler.toml\`, you need to update the \`Bindings\` type in \`src/index.ts\` to match the new database binding name.
- If you only rename the D1 database itself, then update the database scripts in \`package.json\` to reflect the new database name.
