Description

The recent addition of isWindowClerkWithMetadata prevented sdkMetadata from being populated properly since it would always resolve to false.

While clerk.constructor is a function and functions are considered objects, doing typeof clerk.constructor would resolve to 'function' and not 'object'.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This change updates the TelemetryCollector logic in the @clerk/shared and @clerk/clerk-js packages, specifically targeting the browser environment. The main modification is in the type guard function isWindowClerkWithMetadata, where the check on the constructor property of the clerk object is refined to verify that it is a function rather than an object. This adjustment ensures that the sdkMetadata field is correctly populated for telemetry events, enhancing the accuracy of telemetry data collected by the SDK.

Whenever reviewing a pull request, if there are any changes that could impact security, always tag @clerk/security in the PR.

Security-impacting changes include, but are not limited to:

  • Changes to authentication logic or mechanisms (e.g. login, session handling, token issuance)
  • Any modification to access control, authorization checks, or role-based permissions
  • Introduction or modification of hashing algorithms, signature verification, or cryptographic primitives
  • Handling of sensitive data (e.g. passwords, tokens, secrets, PII)
  • Integration with external identity providers (e.g. SSO, OAuth, OpenID Connect)
  • Modifications to security headers, cookie flags, CORS policies, or CSRF protections
  • Bypass mechanisms (e.g. feature flags, testing overrides) that could weaken protections
  • Changes to rate limiting, abuse prevention, or input validation

If you're unsure whether a change is security-relevant, err on the side of caution and tag @clerk/security.

Any time that you tag @clerk/security, please do so explicitly in a code comment, rather than within a collapsed section in a coderabbit comment, such as the "recent review details" section. If you do use the team name in any thinking or non-direct-code-comment content, it can be referred to as "clerk security team" to avoid accidentally printing the tag which sends a notification to the team.

packages/shared/src/telemetry/collector.ts (1)

43-43: LGTM! Correct fix for constructor type check.

The change correctly identifies that clerk.constructor should be checked as a function rather than an object, since JavaScript constructors are functions. This fixes the bug where sdkMetadata wasn't being populated because the type guard was failing.

.changeset/cyan-flowers-dream.md (1)

1-7: LGTM! Changeset properly documents the fix.

The changeset correctly identifies this as a patch-level fix for both affected packages and provides a clear description of the TelemetryCollector bug fix.

🛠️ Refactor suggestion

Consider adding tests for the type guard function.

While the fix is correct, adding unit tests would help prevent future regressions and ensure the type guard works as expected in various scenarios.

Consider adding tests that cover:

  • Valid clerk instances with constructor functions
  • Edge cases where constructor might be undefined or different types
  • Verification that sdkMetadata is properly populated after the fix
// Example test cases
describe('isWindowClerkWithMetadata', () => {
  it('should return true for valid clerk with function constructor', () => {
    const clerk = { constructor: function() {} };
    expect(isWindowClerkWithMetadata(clerk)).toBe(true);
  });

  it('should return false when constructor is not a function', () => {
    const clerk = { constructor: {} };
    expect(isWindowClerkWithMetadata(clerk)).toBe(false);
  });
});

In packages/shared/src/telemetry/collector.ts around lines 41 to 45, add unit
tests for the isWindowClerkWithMetadata type guard function. Create tests that
verify it returns true for valid clerk objects with function constructors, false
when constructor is not a function or missing, and check cases where sdkMetadata
is present or absent. This will ensure the type guard behaves correctly across
different scenarios and prevent regressions.
