feat(friendli): fetch models from /v1/models - #2331
Friendli models now come from the public https://api.friendli.ai/serverless/v1/models endpoint. This endpoint does not need an API key. The fixed friendliModels list stays as a fallback.
src/api/providers/fetchers/friendli.ts: A new fetcher gets the catalog and keeps only chat models. It maps the context window, max output, prices, cache read price, image input, and reasoning effort values.
FriendliHandler: The handler does not fetch the catalog at construction. It loads the catalog one time, before its first request, through getModels. If the request fails or returns no entry, the handler uses the fixed list or the default model info. The handler keeps a configured model ID that is not in the fixed list. The handler does not need an API key at construction, because the catalog is public.
Friendli is now a dynamic provider. requestRouterModels always fetches its catalog.
Webview: The model picker and useSelectedModel use the fetched models when they are available. Before the data loads, they use the fixed list.
Reviewers must check this behavior change: a request with no API key now goes to Friendli and fails with HTTP 401. Before, the handler failed at construction. Kimi Code works the same way.
Test Procedure
Unit tests:
cd src && npx vitest run api/providers/__tests__/friendli.spec.ts api/providers/fetchers/__tests__/friendli.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
cd webview-ui && npx vitest run src/components/ui/hooks/__tests__/useSelectedModel.spec.ts src/components/settings/utils/__tests__/providerModelConfig.spec.ts
pnpm check-types
The tests cover these cases:
Construction with no API key does not fail and does not fetch the catalog.
The fetcher calls the public URL and forwards the abort signal.
The handler loads the catalog one time, and waits for it before it streams.
An empty catalog falls back to the fixed list.
An unknown model ID keeps its ID when the catalog request fails.
The webview uses the fixed list before the router models load.
Manual check:
Run curl -s https://api.friendli.ai/serverless/v1/models. The response has a data list.
Select the Friendli provider in Zoo Code settings.
Open the model picker. It shows the models from the response.

Scope: My changes are focused on the linked issue (one major feature/fix per PR).
Self-Review: I reviewed my own code with care.
Writing Style: The PR title and description use Simplified Technical English (ASD-STE100): short sentences, plain words, active voice, one idea per sentence, no contractions.
Testing: New and/or updated tests have been added to cover my changes (if applicable).
Test Helpers (test changes only): Shared test helpers (src/test-utils/, @/utils/test-utils) are used only for mechanical duplication; test intent and scenario-specific mocks remain visible.
Visual Snapshot (UI changes only): If a user would notice this change at a glance (layout, theme tokens, brand elements, empty/error states), I added or updated a *.visual.tsx snapshot in webview-ui/. See webview-ui/AGENTS.md → "When a UI change needs a snapshot".
Documentation Impact: I checked if my changes need documentation updates (see "Documentation Updates" section below).
Friendli can discover available models and their capabilities, context limits, pricing, and other details from its public catalog without credentials.
Discovered models appear in settings and provide model information for selection, including models not in the static catalog.
Friendli remains usable with static model information while the catalog loads or if catalog details are unavailable.
Friendli is available as a dynamic provider, and configured model selections are preserved.
Models with toggle-only reasoning support can enable or disable reasoning without selecting an effort level.
Friendli is added to dynamic model handling. The system fetches and maps its public model catalog, includes Friendli models in router results, and uses fetched metadata in provider and webview model selection with static fallbacks.
Changes: Friendli model catalog

Summary
Recognize Friendli and map its catalog packages/types/src/provider-settings.ts, packages/types/src/__tests__/provider-identifiers.test.ts, src/api/providers/fetchers/friendli.ts, src/api/providers/fetchers/__tests__/friendli.spec.ts
Friendli is added to the dynamic provider list. The fetcher validates catalog responses and maps chat model metadata, including limits, capabilities, prices, reasoning options, and descriptions. Tests cover mapping and failure cases.
FriendliHandler caches fetched models and exposes catalog fetching. Model lookup uses fetched metadata, then static metadata, then OpenAI sane defaults. Router model results include Friendli.
Use fetched Friendli metadata in model selection webview-ui/src/components/settings/utils/providerModelConfig.ts, webview-ui/src/components/settings/utils/__tests__/providerModelConfig.spec.ts, webview-ui/src/components/settings/ApiOptions.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/useSelectedModel.ts, webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/__tests__/useSelectedModel.spec.ts, webview-ui/src/components/chat/ModelSelector.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/chat/__tests__/ModelSelector.spec.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/settings/providers/__tests__/*, webview-ui/src/utils/__tests__/validate.spec.ts
The settings and chat model pickers and the selected-model hook use fetched Friendli metadata when available and fall back to the static catalog. Supporting test fixtures include Friendli router data.

Resolve the catalog compatibility and metadata-handling gaps before merging. Valid catalog responses can fall back to stale models, failed initial loads do not recover on reused handlers, and short completion deadlines can be exceeded. Static fallbacks and cancellation handling limit the impact.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "feat(friendli): fetch models from /v1/models" matches the main change. The PR makes Friendli load its model catalog from the public /v1/models endpoint instead of only using the fixed list. The title is short, specific, and follows the conventional-commit style. It names the provider, the action, and the endpoint.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It links the issue (Closes: #2332), explains the how (new fetcher, handler lazy-loading with fallback, dynamic provider change, webview use of fetched models), and gives a test procedure with commands and a manual check. It flags the behavior change for reviewers: a missing API key now reaches Friendli and returns HTTP 401 rather than failing at construction. The checklist is filled in. Minor gaps: the test commands are listed but their results are not reported, and the Discord username is only "on request" rather than provided, which the template asks for. The Visual Snapshots section says no snapshot is needed, yet the checklist box is ticked, which is inconsistent. These gaps are not critical, so the check passes.

Explanation
[#2332] Requirement group: show models currently served, with correct context window, max output, pricing, and reasoning effort. The new getFriendliModels in src/api/providers/fetchers/friendli.ts calls the public https://api.friendli.ai/serverless/v1/models endpoint without authentication. It keeps only chat models and maps context window, max output, prices, cache-read price, image input, and reasoning effort values to ModelInfo. Requirement group: the picker shows the served models. ModelSelector.tsx enables router-model fetching for Friendli. providerModelConfig.ts returns non-empty fetched models. The ModelSelector tests cover models absent from the fixed list. Requirement group: keep the fixed list as fallback. The handler and providerModelConfig.ts use friendliModels when the catalog request fails or returns an empty map. Tests cover the empty-catalog fallback and the webview pre-load fallback. Automated tests cover the fetcher mapping, handler single-load behavior, and fallback. Non-coding items (manual curl check, Discord contact) do not apply. Limitation: the PR description lists test commands but reports no run results. This assessment relies on the test files and code evidence in the summary, not on executed test output.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
[#2332] Changes that support the objectives: the new fetcher, the FriendliHandler catalog loading and fallback, friendli in dynamicProviders (provider-settings.ts, provider-identifiers.test.ts), requestRouterModels and webviewMessageHandler.ts (fetch and aggregate Friendli catalog), GetModelsOptions in shared/api.ts, getStaticModelsForProvider and useSelectedModel.ts (use fetched models before fallback), and the matching test fixture updates (ClineProvider.spec.ts, webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts, IOIntelligence.spec.tsx, NanoGPT.spec.tsx, validate.spec.ts). The buildFriendliReasoningParams change for toggle-only models is in friendli.ts. It alters request parameters, not only catalog data. It relates to the reasoning-effort mapping that #2332 requires for each model. The PR description does not describe this change. The reviewer should confirm it is intended for this PR. Null-prototype handling of model IDs (__proto__, toString) supports safe lookup of catalog IDs from the fetcher. The PR description also states that a request without an API key now reaches Friendli and fails with HTTP 401. This follows from the public-catalog design and is a stated behavior change, not an unrelated change.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No concrete security boundary violation was found in the changed paths. The catalog fetch uses a fixed public endpoint and validates the response. Model selection remains subject to organization allowlist checks.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path meets the failure conditions. Friendli uses the existing model cache, which awaits writes and uses safeWriteJson for atomic replacement. The selected model ID remains unchanged when catalog data loads.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Two changed paths still lack focused regression coverage: - ApiOptions.tsx:776-780 passes the fetched catalog to the settings picker. The new ModelSelector test covers the separate chat picker, not this wiring. - friendli.ts:232-233 adds cancellation during catalog loading to completePrompt. The cancellation test covers only createMessage; the completePrompt test covers signal forwarding after loading.
Resolution
Add an ApiOptions component test that checks fetched Friendli models reach the settings picker. Add a completePrompt test that aborts a pending catalog load and verifies rejection without a chat request.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The catalog-settlement cancellation race remains. In src/api/providers/friendli.ts:96-97, the new wait can resolve and detach its abort listener before the generator resumes. If cancellation occurs in that gap, the generator still starts a chat. BaseOpenAiCompatibleProvider.createMessage passes no request options to createStream, so the aborted signal does not stop that request. Task.ts:6024-6040 can stop waiting and a restarted task can issue another request while the stale request continues. The added test covers cancellation only while catalog loading is pending.
Resolution
Check the signal after the catalog wait and before starting the chat. Forward the signal to the streaming request while preserving shared catalog loading. Add tests for cancellation at catalog settlement and during streaming.

84-89: Prevent a failed or empty catalog fetch from being retried per handler construction.
modelsLoad is memoized per handler instance. A new handler repeats the fetch when the cache is empty. The fetch now starts lazily in createMessage and completePrompt, not in the constructor. This addresses the earlier construction-time concern. No further action is needed.

Retry an empty or failed catalog on the next request.
If the first catalog load returns {} or rejects, modelsLoad remains settled. Later requests on the same handler never retry, so a fetched-only model keeps fallback metadata after the catalog recovers. Clear the settled promise on empty results and failures while retaining the shared in-flight promise. BaseProvider.ensureCatalogLoaded already implements that retry pattern. Extend the fetcher test around the model fixtures and assertions to verify that
image support is false for a text-only model and for a model with missing
input_modalities. Preserve the existing fixture and model-list checks, adding
only the cases needed to cover these two outcomes.

Accept null reasoning options.
Friendli permits reasoning_options: null. One such model causes validation to discard the entire catalog. Without a cached catalog, the picker falls back to the fixed list, hiding fetched-only models. Accept null and add a regression test.

Update the schema field reasoning_options so it accepts null as well as an array
or an omitted value, preserving validation of array entries. Add a regression
test confirming a catalog containing a model with null reasoning_options is
accepted and fetched-only models remain available.

Apply the completion deadline before loading models.
When a cold-cache catalog request stalls, completePrompt can remain pending past timeoutMs. Start the deadline before model loading and enforce the remaining budget through the completion request.

When a fetched-only model has a smaller window than the fallback, a resumed task or model switch can send too much history and receive a context-limit rejection. Expose catalog loading through ensureModelFetched so task preparation can use the fetched window.

Guard Friendli model lookups against inherited properties.
When the configured ID is toString or constructor and the catalog lacks that ID, useSelectedModel returns an inherited function as metadata. The task header then displays a one-token context window, while the backend uses 128,000. Use own-property checks and the backend’s sane-default fallback.

Update FriendliProvider.getModel to resolve configured IDs only from own

return the backend’s existing sane-default model metadata so the displayed

The current tests mount the picker separately for fallback and fetched data. A stale model-list memo could pass both. Add a test that mounts with no catalog, supplies the fetched catalog, rerenders the same picker, and asserts the complete replacement list.

Closes: #2332
Description
Friendli models now come from the public
https://api.friendli.ai/serverless/v1/modelsendpoint. This endpoint does not need an API key. The fixedfriendliModelslist stays as a fallback.src/api/providers/fetchers/friendli.ts: A new fetcher gets the catalog and keeps only chat models. It maps the context window, max output, prices, cache read price, image input, and reasoning effort values.FriendliHandler: The handler does not fetch the catalog at construction. It loads the catalog one time, before its first request, throughgetModels. If the request fails or returns no entry, the handler uses the fixed list or the default model info. The handler keeps a configured model ID that is not in the fixed list. The handler does not need an API key at construction, because the catalog is public.requestRouterModelsalways fetches its catalog.useSelectedModeluse the fetched models when they are available. Before the data loads, they use the fixed list.Reviewers must check this behavior change: a request with no API key now goes to Friendli and fails with HTTP 401. Before, the handler failed at construction. Kimi Code works the same way.
