feat(server-util)!: allow swappable DOM environments - #3237
Closes#3230. Takes the pluggable DOM direction from #2175, with direct Document injection instead of acquisition/release hooks.
Problem
Server-side exports of React custom blocks can finish successfully, then crash in React 19's development build when queued React work reads window.event. Temporarily installing DOM globals and restoring them when the export returns makes their lifetime shorter than React's work.
This revision replaces the scheduler-based workaround with a persistent rendering environment. It does not depend on React scheduler internals, event-loop timing, or changes to React or the custom-block callback-ref API.
Changes
Accept an optional document: ServerBlockNoteEditor.create(options, document). Other compatible DOM implementations can supply their document directly.
Provide the bundled JSDOM implementation through the opt-in @blocknote/server-util/dom entry point. The main entry point does not load JSDOM, and neither importing the factory nor calling it installs globals.
Fall back to the ambient DOM when no document is supplied.
On first DOM use, persistently bind the supplied document and its defaultView if globals are absent. Reuse matching globals and reject partial or conflicting environments instead of swapping them.
Share one document across nested exports and different editors. Remove scheduler probing, per-editor JSDOM instances, global restoration, and the arbitrary delay after context-root unmounting.
Keep JSON, ProseMirror, and Yjs conversions usable without a DOM.
Document setup, DOM lifetime, custom implementations, and worker/process isolation.
Usage / setup change
HTML/Markdown processing in Node now requires an explicit document unless the environment already supplies DOM globals:
Share this document across editors and keep the environment alive for deferred React work. An export resolving means its output is ready, not that all asynchronous component work has finished. For applications that cannot accept persistent DOM globals, initialize the editor, schema, and providers inside a dedicated worker or process. Serialize withReactContext calls on the same editor; use separate editors for concurrent context-dependent exports.
Verification
All 20 server-util tests pass, including existing snapshots, injected and ambient DOM handling, conflicting/missing environments, deferred component work, concurrent exports, nested context exports, and cleanup after failure.
Type-aware lint and the commit-time vp check --fix pass.
ESM build passes, including the document factory entry point. Merged origin/main and retained its ESM-only packaging; the /dom export follows the same format.
Standalone Node development-mode stress test: 10,000 React callback-ref exports across four editors sharing an injected document; all 10,000 effects and cleanups ran against the same document, with stable globals and a clean process exit.
Documentation links validate and the updated page renders successfully.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Server-side editors can use a supplied DOM document for HTML, Markdown, and React-context operations. A DOM utility is available through a separate package entry point.
Bug Fixes
DOM-dependent operations now validate that the document matches the active browser-like environment and report errors for missing or incompatible DOM setup. DOM-independent conversions continue to work without browser globals.
Documentation
Updated server-processing guidance and package documentation with DOM setup, document sharing, and React export concurrency considerations.
ServerBlockNoteEditor now accepts a supplied DOM document or uses the global document. DOM-dependent operations validate and use that document. The package adds a document factory subpath, tests DOM and React behavior, and updates server-processing guidance.

Summary
Select and validate the DOM document packages/server-util/src/context/ServerBlockNoteEditor.ts, packages/server-util/src/context/DOMEnvironment.test.ts
The editor accepts an optional document and uses it for HTML and Markdown conversion and React context rendering. It rejects missing or conflicting DOM environments. JSON and Yjs conversions remain usable without DOM globals.
React roots use the selected document. The delay before unmounting is removed. Tests cover deferred work, concurrent exports, nested exports, and callback failures while checking the application DOM.
The package exports getDocument() from a ./dom subpath. Tests cover injected documents and global handling. Documentation describes DOM setup, lifetime, isolation, and React context concurrency.

Explanation
The PR addresses [#3230]. ServerBlockNoteEditor now uses a persistent supplied or ambient Document and does not restore DOM globals after an export. It applies this environment to HTML, Markdown, and React-context exports. The implementation rejects partial or conflicting globals instead of swapping them. Tests cover deferred React work, concurrent exports, nested context exports, cleanup after failure, and the shared document. These changes cover the reported React development-build failure and preserve behavior for production builds.

Explanation
The changes stay within [#3230]. The ./dom entry point, document injection API, DOM-lifetime documentation, and regression tests support persistent DOM handling for React custom-block exports. JSON, ProseMirror, and Yjs support remains available without DOM setup. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Serialize overlapping DOM-global scopes.
If a second export starts while the first export awaits reactSchedulerIdle(), the second export saves the first editor’s JSDOM globals. The first export can then restore its original globals while the second export still runs. The second export can finally restore the first editor’s globals instead of the process’s original globals. This new wait extends that overlap beyond the export callback. Serialize scopes across editor instances, while allowing the nested _withJSDOM call used by withReactContext. Add descriptive messages to the DOM validation errors.
getDOMDocument throws new Error() with no message in both failure paths. Callers get an empty error and cannot tell which case failed. The failure cases are:
No document is available.
The document has no defaultView.
A global is missing.
A global conflicts with the supplied document.
Existing callers that used ServerBlockNoteEditor.create() in plain Node without DOM globals now hit this error. The error text gives them no way to find the fix, which is to pass getDocument() from @blocknote/server-util/dom. The tests and docs describe these failures as "clear", but the message is empty.
