Description

This change allows the collection of RegistryKey VmId for getting the ID value of that azure vm from the machine.

Motivation and Context

This PR addresses: BED-9763

How Has This Been Tested?

This has been tested by creating a build of the code and running a collection on an Azure VM. In addition unit tests were created to support and document this behavior.

Screenshots (if appropriate):

Types of changes

  • Chore (a change that does not modify the application functionality)
  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)

Checklist:

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added collection of Azure VM registry data, including the VM ID, through supported collection modes.
    • VM IDs are trimmed and converted to lowercase when present. Collection can still succeed when no ID is available.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Collection failures are reported when data cannot be collected, including timeouts or unsuccessful collection attempts.

Walkthrough

The change adds Azure registry collection flags and an output type. RegistryProcessor reads and normalizes the Azure VM ID, reports strategy status, and returns failures for unsuccessful collection or exceptions. Unit tests cover these outcomes.

Changes

Azure Registry Collection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Azure collection contract
src/CommonLib/Enums/CollectionMethod.cs, src/CommonLib/OutputTypes/RegistryData.cs
Adds AzureRegistry to the ComputerOnly and All flag combinations. Adds AzureRegistryData with a nullable VmId property.
Azure registry query and processing
src/CommonLib/Processors/RegistryProcessor.cs
Queries HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Azure\VmId with existing strategies and timeout handling. Reports attempt status, normalizes a returned VM ID, and returns failures for timeouts, unsuccessful collection, or exceptions.
Azure registry collection tests
test/unit/RegistryProcessorTests.cs
Adds tests for normalized and missing VM IDs, strategy outcomes, collection failures, exceptions, logs, and status events.

Preserve the ReadAzureVmId compatibility API.

When SharpHound resolves a 4.9.1-dev* package produced by this head, its Azure VM branch calls ReadAzureVmId(apiName). This head removed that method and exposes only ReadAzureRegistryData, so the downstream build fails before collection runs.

Review comment at @src/CommonLib/Processors/RegistryProcessor.cs at line 154:
Restore the public ReadAzureVmId compatibility API in RegistryProcessor by
delegating to ReadAzureRegistryData and returning its VmId as an
APIResult<string>. Propagate collection failures and return failure when VmId is
missing or whitespace; keep ReadAzureRegistryData unchanged.
