Description

Fixes #6137.

In dbt projects, SQLMesh's fromyaml builtin wrapped the parsed document in dict(...), so YAML whose top level isn't a mapping came back wrong:

  • A block-style list (- good\n- bad) raised an uncaught ValueError, which failed rendering.
  • A flow-style list ([1, 2]) or a scalar (42) quietly returned None, because the TypeError from dict() is caught and default is returned.

dbt's fromyaml returns yaml.safe_load(value) unchanged. sqlmesh.utils.yaml.load already returns plain Python objects (dict, list, int, ...), so this change drops the dict(...) wrapper and returns the parsed value directly. Mappings give the same result as before, and invalid YAML still returns default.

Test Plan

  • Extended test_yaml in tests/dbt/test_transformation.py with a flow-style list, a block-style list (built with {% set %}, like the example in dbt's docs) and a scalar. On main the test fails: it renders None for [1, 2], and the block-style list raises ValueError: dictionary update sequence element #0 has length 4; 2 is required. With this change it passes.
  • Ran pytest tests/dbt (slow tests included) on Windows: 296 passed, 2 skipped. One test, test_load_custom_materialisations, errored in the parallel run, but it passes on its own both on this branch and on main. To run the sushi_test based tests locally, I replaced the sushi_test/dbt_packages symlinks with directory junctions, since git checks them out as plain files on Windows.
  • ruff check and ruff format --check are clean on the changed files. mypy sqlmesh/dbt/builtin.py only reports the errors my local environment also gives on main (missing sqlmesh._version, signal.SIGUSR1).

Checklist

  • I have run make style and fixed any issues (ran ruff + mypy on the changed files only; on Windows, mypy only shows the same environment errors as on main)
  • I have added tests for my changes (if applicable)
  • All existing tests pass (make fast-test) (ran tests/dbt on Windows and compared against main; I didn't run the full suite)
  • My commits are signed off (git commit -s) per the DCO

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • YAML parsing now preserves the parsed value instead of converting it to a dictionary, allowing sequences and numeric scalars to be returned as expected.
    • Added coverage for YAML sequences, sequences generated from templates, and numeric scalars.

Thanks, this looks right: dbt returns safe_load unchanged, and our loader already gives plain dicts and lists, so mappings render the same as before. I checked the new assertions fail on main. Approving the CI run now so the dbt version matrix runs, and I'll merge once it's green.

The fromyaml builtin wrapped the parsed document in dict(), so YAML
whose top level is not a mapping was mishandled: a block-style list
raised an uncaught ValueError, and a flow-style list or a scalar was
silently returned as None. dbt returns the parsed value as is.

sqlmesh.utils.yaml.load already returns plain Python objects, so return
its result directly. Mappings are unaffected.

from_yaml now returns the value produced by the YAML loader directly. Tests cover parsing YAML sequences and a numeric scalar.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: mday-io

Merge Risk: Low · up to 8b917

The new scalar behavior remains incomplete for explicit null values; this is a narrow, localized fix.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 8b917

The change allows templates to receive YAML lists and scalars without adding execution privileges or weakening parsing controls. No introduced or worsened security issue was identified in the reviewed change.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is a value-shape change within existing DBT template execution. The changed test is not a new production ingress, and the inspected delta does not introduce a new authority-bearing call or forward parsed values to a new privileged sink.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Removing dict() changes post-parse conversion rather than the parsing trust boundary: the same input reaches the same safe loader before either implementation returns. The change therefore does not enable unsafe YAML construction or additional template evaluation through this call.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(dbt): return lists and scalars from fromyaml" names the main change. The PR drops the dict(...) wrapper in the dbt fromyaml builtin so that top-level YAML lists and scalars return their parsed values. The title is specific, short, and matches the raw summary, objectives, and linked issue #6137.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has a Description section that explains the bug (dict(...) wrapping breaks top-level lists and scalars) and the fix. It has a Test Plan section that describes the extended test_yaml cases, the failure on main, and the Windows test run. It has a Checklist section with the template items. Some checklist items are unchecked or qualified: make style was run only on changed files with ruff and mypy, and the full make fast-test suite was not run. These gaps are disclosed by the author. They do not make the description largely incomplete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #6137 is the only directly linked issue. Its coding requirement is that dbt-compatible fromyaml return top-level YAML lists and scalars unchanged, and keep mapping behavior and the default fallback for invalid YAML.

At the reviewed head, sqlmesh/dbt/builtin.py from_yaml returns yaml.load(value, raise_if_empty=False, render_jinja=False) directly. The dict(...) wrapper that caused the ValueError (block-style list) and the None result (flow-style list, scalar) is removed. The except (TypeError, YAMLError): return default branch is unchanged, so invalid YAML still returns default.

sqlmesh/utils/yaml.load returns the parsed ruamel object. For a mapping, the result is the same dict as before, without the extra copy. For empty input with raise_if_empty=False, load returns {}, which matches the previous dict({}) result.

Tests: tests/dbt/test_transformation.py::test_yaml adds assertions for fromyaml('[1, 2]') rendering [1, 2], a block-style list built with {% set %} rendering ['good', 'bad'], and fromyaml('42') rendering 42. These cover the three cases in the issue. The existing mapping assertion fromyaml('key: value') is kept.

I did not execute the tests. The verdict rests on the code path and the added assertions.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff (merge base 3fea21e to head 8b91758) changes two files.

  1. sqlmesh/dbt/builtin.py: one line in from_yaml, removing the dict(...) wrapper. This is the fix required by #6137.
  2. tests/dbt/test_transformation.py: three assertions added to test_yaml, covering flow-style list, block-style list, and scalar. These test the required behavior.

No unrelated files or behavior changes appear in the diff. The PR description's test-environment notes (symlink-to-junction replacement for sushi_test/dbt_packages on Windows) are local test-run steps. They do not appear as repository changes in this diff.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 2 files.

The 6 failures come from duckdb 2.0.0: that run tested a merge with main from Oct 13, before #6158 added the duckdb<2 pin, so the Python 3.11+ jobs installed 2.0.0 and failed with ResourceInUseException (3.9/3.10 got 1.5.6 and passed, and the dbt matrix is green). I've rebased onto current main so the next run picks up the pin.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Preserve explicit YAML null values.

sqlmesh.utils.yaml.load(..., raise_if_empty=False) converts every contents is None result to {}. Therefore, from_yaml("null") returns {} instead of the parsed scalar None. Distinguish an empty document from explicit null in the loader, and add a regression assertion.
