Hi,

ROC AUC and average precision can return incorrect scores with uint8, int8, or float16 labels. For example, a perfect ranking with 256 positive and 256 negative uint8 labels returns ROC AUC of 0.0 instead of 1.0.

Both calculations use typing.cast(float, y[i]), which does not convert the value at runtime. The accumulators can therefore inherit a narrow NumPy dtype and overflow.

This PR converts each label scalar to a Python float before accumulation. It also computes class-support weights as float64 NumPy values on CPU. This prevents support-count overflow and fixes weighted averaging with CUDA labels, which currently raises an error when NumPy attempts to convert GPU tensors.

The regression tests cover seven label dtypes on CPU and CUDA, tied predictions, unequal class supports, and both functional APIs and cumulative metric aggregation.

Testing

  • Before the fix, the new regression cases expose overflow on CPU and CUDA, along with CUDA-to-NumPy conversion errors during weighted averaging.
  • After the fix, both metric test modules pass all 100 tests and 84 subtests, including 28 explicit CUDA regression cases. No tests are skipped.
  • The ROC AUC and average precision handler tests also pass: 2 tests passed.
  • Black, isort, Ruff, and whitespace checks pass for the changed files.

Tested locally with Python 3.12.3, PyTorch 2.8.0+cu126, NumPy 2.5.4, and an NVIDIA RTX 2060.

The full MONAI test suite and static type checking were not run.

Types of changes

  • Non-breaking change (fix or new feature that would not break existing functionality).
  • New tests added to cover the changes.

Walkthrough

Average precision and ROC AUC convert label values to floats. Weighted class supports use CPU NumPy sums with float64 accumulation. New parameterized tests cover tied scores, label dtypes, CPU and CUDA, and averaging modes through functional and metric APIs.

Use tied predictions and a larger fixture.

The current fixture is perfectly ranked, so it does not detect the float16 accumulator regression. Use 4096 labels of each class with one shared prediction score. The original implementation then returns 1/6, while the fixed implementation returns the correct tied-score AUC of 0.5. Both APIs use the same calculation path.

Add a float16 weight-overflow case above 2048 positives.

The committed fixture uses supports 256 and 128. float16 represents every integer up to 2048 exactly, so the old sum(y_) weights and the new np.sum(..., dtype=np.float64) weights are both 256 and 128. Restoring the old weight calculation leaves this test passing, so the test does not detect a regression in support-count overflow.

Add a case with 2049 positive rows and 1024 negative rows. The old float16 sum saturates at 2048 for class 0, so the weighted result changes from 2049/3073 (about 0.666775) to 2048/3072 (about 0.666667). That difference exceeds rtol=1e-6.

Increase the class supports to exercise float16 support accumulation.

The fixture uses supports of 256 and 128. Both are exactly representable in float16, so the old sum(y_) calculation can still produce the correct weights. A regression in support accumulation can pass this test.

Use supports above the float16 unit-increment boundary:

Suggested fix
- y = torch.tensor([[1, 0]] * 256 + [[0, 1]] * 128, dtype=dtype, device=device)
- y_pred = torch.zeros((384, 2), device=device)
- y_pred[:256, 0] = 1
+ y = torch.tensor([[1, 0]] * 4096 + [[0, 1]] * 2048, dtype=dtype, device=device)
+ y_pred = torch.zeros((6144, 2), device=device)
+ y_pred[:4096, 0] = 1
