feat(nvcf-cli): add event-ledger stats and events commands - #2508
shelleyshen-0 wants to merge 34 commits into
Conversation
Add two read commands for the Event Ledger: "stats get" shows the latest event for every instance of a function version, and "stages events list" shows the event history of one instance, filtered by instance, deployment, GPU specification or cluster. api-key generate now also mints an Event Ledger key with the fnds:getEvents scope, saved to CLI state and used by the new commands. api-key show, clear and clear-all cover the function, task and Event Ledger keys. The compute-plane registration values now enable the NVCA OTel collector when the event-ledger Helm release is found on the control plane, and carry the Event Ledger service URL for split-cluster installs. The nvca helmfile accepts the setting from the registration values. Bump the event-ledger chart in the self-managed stack from 0.5.0 to 0.6.0.

Require explicit opt-in for an implicitly derived HTTP Event Ledger URL.
When base_http_url uses an api. hostname and neither --event-ledger-url nor event_ledger_url is set, the CLI derives an http://events... URL. eventLedgerAPIKey then falls back to the general API key, which get sends as a bearer credential.
Keep explicitly configured HTTP Event Ledger URLs supported. The documented non-TLS gateway configuration uses a plain gateway hostname and an explicit event_ledger_url, so that is an informed choice. Do not warn or reject that configuration solely because it uses HTTP. Require opt-in for the implicit HTTP derivation, or reject that derived URL. A warning alone does not prevent credential disclosure.

The Event Ledger events API does not require a context filter, so the CLI no longer requires one. With no filter, the command returns the events stored without a context. Docs, tests and the generated skill data are updated.
Time out the helm list call that checks for the event-ledger release so an unreachable cluster cannot hang up or install; a timeout leaves the NVCA OTel collector disabled with a warning. Update the api-key generate row in the CLI docs to mention the Event Ledger key.

What exactly is this doing, is it auto enabling something on the compute plane if the control plane have event ledger? That pattern sounds a little weird, like a user can enable event ledger without realising it
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Yeah it auto-enables the collector when the control plane has event-ledger deployed. The CLI checks for the event-ledger helm release during compute-plane register / self-hosted up, and if it's there, writes enabled: true into the registration values file.
The next line ORs it with the existing nvcaOperator.selfManaged.otelCollector.enabled setting, so either source can turn it on.
The reasoning is because if event-ledger is enabled on the control plane, you'd want the compute-plane collector on too, otherwise you're not getting any events into it. Didn't want to make people flip it in two places.
It's gated on addons.eventLedger.enabled on the control plane, it defaults to true in base.yaml. If the flag is disabled, then registrationOTelCollector falls through to false and the only place that enables the colletor would be nvcaOperator.selfManaged.otelCollector.enabled.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Rationale for that decision: compute planes register separately from the control plane, and the usual flow is to stand up a control plane once and then register N compute planes against it. Having the CLI auto-enable the OTel collector based on the control plane's Event Ledger status would be surprising, since operators already have to explicitly configure compute-plane options like Dynamo or KAI during registration, so Event Ledger should be just another explicit toggle there rather than an automatic side effect. It also would not help operators who register compute planes through GitOps/Argo instead of the CLI, since they would never hit the auto-enable path and could end up missing it entirely.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Per discussion removing registration-values auto-enable logic and require operators to set global.nvcaOperator.selfManaged.otelCollector.enabled: true. Since compute planes register separately from the control plane, and operators already explicitly configure other compute-plane options so it would be more consistent with existing pattern to allow explicit toggle on NVCA otel collector enablement rather than an automatic side effect of the CLI.
| Body string `json:"body,omitempty"` | ||

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Body is typed narrower than the server returns. Event Ledger stores and returns it as any (v3.go EventDetails). NVCA's collector uses the k8sobjects receiver in watch mode, which always sets the body to a map ({"type": ..., "object": {...}}), so stages events list will fail to decode NVCA events.
Since the whole response is decoded at once, one such event fails the command. The tests pass because their fixtures only use string bodies.
Suggest matching the server types.
api-key generate --for event-ledger reused the general NVCF function-key ServiceID as the mint request's audience and Key-Issuer-Id, instead of Event Ledger's own service ID. The mint succeeded, but the resulting key was unconditionally rejected by Event Ledger with 403, confirmed against a live stack. Add a dedicated ServiceID default, matching the existing NVCT pattern. …d PSAT auth The compute-plane stack pinned helm-nvca-operator at 1.28.0, which predates the self-hosted OTel collector PSAT auth path (chart 1.32.0+). On a self-hosted cluster, the collector falls back to authenticating with the NGC service API key against the external Event Ledger URL and is rejected with 403, instead of using the in-cluster PSAT path. Bump to 1.32.7, the latest published chart with the fix. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Shelley Shen <shelleys@nvidia.com>
The chart version bump alone does not update the running operator or agent images: global.nvcaOperator.imageTag and selfManaged.nvcaVersion are explicit overrides in this stack's base.yaml, independent of the chart's appVersion. Bump both to 3.12.7 so the operator actually runs the PSAT-aware reconcile code added in commit abe5bab, not just the chart templates. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Shelley Shen <shelleys@nvidia.com>
3.12.7, used in the previous commit, is the nvca-operator chart's default appVersion, but the nvca-operator and nvca container images are tagged on a separate, path-scoped versioning scheme from the chart. 3.12.7 predates commit abe5bab (the PSAT identity fix); 3.16.0 is the first image tag that contains it. Use 3.16.7, the latest published image, for both the operator and the agent/collector image tag. EventDetails.Body was typed string, but the server types it any (event-ledger EventDetails.Body) since NVCA's k8s-objects receiver sends a structured object, not a string. stages events list failed to decode the whole response once any event had an object body, confirmed live after fixing the event-ledger API key audience and the self-hosted PSAT auth path: json: cannot unmarshal object into Go struct field EventDetails.events.details.body of type string Widen Body to any and Attributes to map[string]any to match the server, and format a structured body as compact JSON in the text table. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Shelley Shen <shelleys@nvidia.com>
…lector Dropped the CLI and helmfile logic that auto-enabled the NVCA OTel collector on a compute plane whenever the control plane advertised a running Event Ledger. A control plane can have many registered compute planes, and some are registered through GitOps/Argo rather than nvcf-cli, so inferring the collector toggle from the control plane's state was surprising and unreliable (#2508, discussion r4277583900). Operators now set global.nvcaOperator.selfManaged.otelCollector.enabled explicitly in their compute-plane environment config, the same way they already opt in to KAI, Dynamo, and other optional compute-plane addons. The Event Ledger service URL is still plumbed through automatically; only the enable toggle is now manual. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Shelley Shen <shelleys@nvidia.com>
…e-plane registration The note about operators needing to enable the NVCA OTel collector explicitly sat as a stray paragraph between unrelated sections in both docs/overview/cli.md and the nvcf-self-managed-cli skill reference. Moved each into the surrounding text that already documents compute-plane registration, where the toggle is actually relevant. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Shelley Shen <shelleys@nvidia.com>
… section Reverts the cli.md part of ebcf0e8: the Event Ledger Commands section, right after the stats/stages examples, is the right place for this note since that's where readers already are when setting up Event Ledger. Only the nvcf-self-managed-cli skill reference needed to move its copy into the compute-plane register row. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Shelley Shen <shelleys@nvidia.com>
…n the cluster-config page The Event Ledger Commands section of docs/overview/cli.md was still the wrong home for this note: it documents reading events via the CLI, not compute-plane cluster configuration. Moved the explanation to self-managed.md's "Installing the NVCA Operator" section, next to the other global.nvcaOperator.* values documented there, and left a short pointer from cli.md. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Shelley Shen <shelleys@nvidia.com>
The CLI auto-enable logic for the NVCA OTel collector was removed already (6e50788), but the Event Ledger detection and the eventLedgerServiceURL/Enabled plumbing it fed stuck around, writing information-only data that nothing consumed: the compute-plane values never read Enabled after that fix, and eventLedgerServiceURL is purely collector export config, meaningless unless the collector is also manually enabled. Removed the live `helm list` detection (resolveEventLedgerAddon, eventLedgerDeployed) and every write path that fed it: the control-plane profile's addons.eventLedger, and the eventLedgerServiceURL field on the generated compute-plane NVCA values. Operators who enable the OTel collector now also set eventLedgerServiceURL themselves in their compute-plane environment config, the same as the enable toggle; documented both together in self-managed.md. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Shelley Shen <shelleys@nvidia.com>
…sponse The "A read key can query the ledger and bad queries are rejected" scenario was the only POST .../v1/keys + export-id pair in this feature file without a status assertion between the request and the JSON field export (every sibling scenario has one). A live run hit a non-200 response at that point and surfaced as an opaque "parse json: invalid character 'u' looking for beginning of value" instead of a clear status failure; the api-keys service logs confirmed the underlying key creation actually succeeded, so this was a transient response, not a product bug. Add the missing assertion so a future transient failure fails with a clear status code instead of a confusing downstream parse error. Verified: a full clean-slate TestEventLedger live run (fresh k3d cluster delete + rebuild) now passes 10/10 scenarios, 211/211 steps. This fallback can't succeed. Event Ledger only accepts keys with a policy for its own audience, so the function key always gets 403. Users without an Event Ledger key see "403: Forbidden" with no hint, and the function key is sent for nothing. Suggest removing the fallback and erroring with "run nvcf-cli api-key generate --for event-ledger". This also resolves the open thread on client.go.

ok agree. This follows the same fallback pattern as NVCT's dedicated key. Makes sense that it should be removed, since each key is meant for its own audience. Both fall back would introspect against an audience the function key's audienceServiceIds doesn't include, they can never succeed and it just produces a confusing 403/401 instead of a clear error.
I will remove it. NVCT has the same issue but I will do it outside of this PR.

With --validate, this key reaches the existing check at lines 295-298, which only distinguishes "task" and validates everything else with the NVCF audience. api-keys returns 400 "audience_service_id invalid", so --validate reports the Event Ledger key as failed although it works. Add an event-ledger case that validates with the Event Ledger service ID.
The Event Ledger only accepts keys minted for its own audience, so the general API key fallback in eventLedgerAPIKey could never succeed; it only produced a confusing auth error instead of a clear one. stats get and stages events list now fail fast with a message pointing to nvcf-cli api-key generate --for event-ledger when no dedicated key is configured. Signed-off-by: Shelley Shen <shelleys@nvidia.com>
api-key generate --validate checked every non-task key against the NVCF function audience, so an Event Ledger key always failed validation with audience_service_id invalid even though the key works. Add validateEventLedgerAPIKey, used for the event-ledger key the same way validateNVCTAPIKey is used for task keys. TestApikeyGenerate_ValidateBothKeysUsesCorrectAudiences already counted three introspect calls but never asserted the third one's audience, so it did not catch this. It now asserts all three audiences, and configureApikeyTest gets the Event Ledger service-id override the function and task cases already had. Signed-off-by: Shelley Shen <shelleys@nvidia.com>

clear-all clears the Event Ledger key from local state here, but only deletes server-side keys listed under the function and task issuers (lines 1015-1016). Event Ledger keys are minted under the Event Ledger issuer, so they are never listed or deleted and stay valid until expiry. On a local stack, listing under the Event Ledger issuer still showed them. Suggest adding an Event Ledger api-keys client to list and delete them too.
Event Ledger keys are issued under the NVCF issuer but a different ServiceID, so api-key list only ever listed function and task keys and silently omitted them. Add eventLedgerAPIKeysConfig and query it alongside the function and task clients. Also guard the "Listing API keys..." info log with IsJSONOutput(), for consistency with every other logging.Info call in this file and so the command is unit-testable in JSON mode without relying on logging's own package-level state being synced by root.go. clear-all only listed and deleted function and task keys, so Event Ledger keys stayed valid on the server after clear-all reported success. delete tried only the function and task issuers, so deleting an Event Ledger key by ID always failed. clear-all now also lists, prompts for, and deletes Event Ledger keys through eventLedgerAPIKeysConfig. delete now falls back to the Event Ledger issuer after both function and task 404, with a combined error when none of the three own the key. Add a scenario to event-ledger.feature that mints Event Ledger-audience keys through raw api-keys calls, then exercises nvcf-cli api-key list, delete and clear-all against them, confirming list surfaces the key and delete/clear-all actually remove it server-side. Update the fake HTTP responder and fake CommandRunner in TestEventLedgerFeatureFileWiresToSteps to wire the new steps: GET /v1/keys now returns 200, and the new api-key list/delete commands have canned output. newEventLedgerClient called client.LoadConfig, which requires a function API key, admin token, or OAuth2 credentials before the dedicated Event Ledger key is even checked. A user holding only an Event Ledger key could not run stats get or stages events list. Use LoadConfigWithoutAuth, which still loads EventLedgerAPIKey but skips the unrelated credential gate; the existing dedicated-key check right after still rejects a request with no Event Ledger key at all. The nvcf-cli api-key list/delete/clear-all Event Ledger coverage belongs with the api-key tests in src/clis/nvcf-cli, not in this PR's Event Ledger feature file. Signed-off-by: Shelley Shen <shelleys@nvidia.com>
TL;DR
Add
nvcf-cli stats getandnvcf-cli stages events listto read function deployment events from the Event Ledger, giveapi-key generatean Event Ledger key to authorize them, and bump the stalenvca-operatorchart/image pins so the self-hosted compute plane actually picks up the already-merged self-hosted PSAT auth fix for the OTel collector.Additional Details (optional for docs, build, test, refactor, ci, chore, style, and revert PRs)
Why: self-managed operators had no CLI way to read Event Ledger data, and the compute plane's OTel collector couldn't reach Event Ledger over the self-hosted PSAT auth path.
stats get --function-version-id <uuid>shows the latest event for every instance of a function version, with an optional--event-filter.--function-version-idmust be a UUID and defaults to the saved version ID.stages events listshows the event history of one context of a function version, most recent first. The context filters--instance-id,--deployment-id,--gpu-specification-id,--cluster-idand--resource-idare optional and must match how the events were ingested. With none, the API returns only the events stored without a context.--attribute-keywith--attribute-value(given together) keeps only events whose attribute has that value.EVENT_LEDGER_URLorevent_ledger_url, and otherwise replaces the leadingapi.ofbase_http_urlwithevents..event_ledger_hostsets a Host header for hostname-based routing.api-key generatemints an Event Ledger key with thefnds:getEventsscope under the Event Ledger service's own audience. It is saved to CLI state.api-key show,clearandclear-allcover the function, task and Event Ledger keys, including the saved task key, whichclearandclear-allpreviously left in state.clear-all --jsonnow clears the saved keys too.nvca-operatorchart 1.28.0 to 1.32.7 and thenvca-operator/nvcaimages to 3.16.7, which carry self-hosted PSAT auth for the OTel collector (replacing a broken NGC-service-key path). The chart pin predates that fix and was stale independent of this PR.global.nvcaOperator.selfManaged.otelCollector.enabled: true(andeventLedgerServiceURLfor split-cluster installs) explicitly in their compute-plane environment config, same as other optional addons (KAI, Dynamo). All CLI-side detection/write code for this was removed.Limitations:
