TL;DR

Wires the write cache to the events table. With cache.enabled set, the first event for a key is written to Cassandra at once, and a later event for the same key is held and flushed by the timing wheel, at most once per flush interval. Pending events are written when the service shuts down. The cache is disabled by default, so nothing changes unless it is turned on. This is PR 6 of 6 and builds on #2255, so this PR targets that branch.

Additional Details (optional for docs, build, test, refactor, ci, chore, style, and revert PRs)

Streaming sessions send the same status event at high frequency, and each one costs a Cassandra write even though only the latest value per key is kept. #2255 added the cache, eviction, timing wheel, and metrics, but nothing called them. This PR connects them.

How a write flows, in src/control-plane-services/event-ledger/internal/cache/:

  • events.go: UpsertEventV3 and BulkUpsertEventsV3 are overridden on the caching handler. A miss goes to writeMisses. A hit returns at once and is flushed later. A payload over 4 KiB bypasses the cache, so a few large events cannot use up the memory that MaxSize bounds.
  • flush.go: the flush function now takes a batch. The wheel calls flushDue, and completeFlush marks an entry clean only if its timestamp is still the one written, so an event that arrived during the write stays pending and is scheduled again.
  • writeMisses retries a failed write 4 times (waits of 100ms, 200ms, 400ms, inside a 10s timeout). If every try fails, the events are kept as pending entries on the wheel. Without that, a redelivery with the same timestamp would be discarded as stale and the event lost. The write error is still returned to the caller.
  • Drain and Close write the pending entries a batch at a time, oldest first.

Why a guarded write: the existing events upserts overwrite whatever is stored, so a delayed flush could replace a newer row. GuardedEventsWriter (internal/data_access/db.go) is an optional interface, and CassandraHandler.UpsertEventsIfNewerV3 implements it with a conditional insert (IF NOT EXISTS) and then a conditional update (IF timestamp < ?) that keeps created_at. Misses and flushes both use it.

Wiring: cmd/api/service/write_cache.go builds the cache when cache.enabled is true. It refuses to start if the database handler has no guarded write, applies the defaults for zero settings, and starts the wheel. cmd/api/startup/run_service.go drains the cache for up to 20 seconds after the HTTP server stops, inside the pod's default 30 second grace period. The Helm values and README now describe cache.enabled as active.

Limitations to know about:

  • A held event is acknowledged before it is durable, so a crash can lose up to one flush interval of the latest events.
  • Cassandra stores timestamps in milliseconds and the cache compares nanoseconds. Two events inside one millisecond can lose the second. I confirmed this against a local Cassandra 5 container.
  • An event with a payload over 4 KiB uses the unguarded upsert, so an older one can replace a newer row. Also confirmed against the container.
  • A miss costs one conditional write when the row is new, and two when it already exists.
  • A failed miss write holds the request for up to about 0.7 seconds of retries before the error is returned.
  • Inactivity eviction is not run yet, because evictInactive still has no caller. Only size eviction runs.
  • Writes that arrive after Drain are not flushed.

For the Reviewer

Please look closely at:

  • internal/cache/flush.go: completeFlush (the timestamp check) and writeMisses (the retry, then keep pending).
  • internal/db_client/cassandra/v2.go: upsertEventIfNewerV3. The change to this file only adds code. The two existing bulk methods are unchanged.

Questions:

  • Is it acceptable that a held event is acknowledged before it is durable, given the flush interval?
  • Should the two limitations above (same-millisecond events, oversize events) be fixed in this PR or in a follow-up?

For QA (optional for docs, build, test, refactor, ci, chore, style, and revert PRs)

Run:

  • go test -race ./... in src/control-plane-services/event-ledger: all packages pass.
  • bazel test //src/control-plane-services/event-ledger/...: 15 of 15 pass.
  • helm lint deploy/helm/event-ledger: clean.
  • The Cassandra integration tests against a local container: the guarded write test and the existing bulk tests pass. A throwaway end-to-end check also confirmed that a miss followed by hits leaves the latest event and the first created_at in the table.

QA is needed before the cache is turned on anywhere. It needs a run with cache.enabled=true against a real stack, watching the nvcf_event_ledger_cache_* metrics.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The optional event write cache reduces repeated writes for events with the same namespace, context, and name. Cached events are written at most once per flush interval, and pending events are written during shutdown.
  • Important Notes
    • Large-payload events bypass the cache. A crash may result in losing up to one flush interval of recent cached events.

📝 Walkthrough

The Event Ledger adds an optional cache for V3 event writes. The cache batches and flushes pending records through guarded Cassandra upserts. Service shutdown drains pending writes.

Changes: Event write caching

Layer / File(s) Summary
Guarded Cassandra writes
src/control-plane-services/event-ledger/internal/data_access/db.go, src/control-plane-services/event-ledger/internal/db_client/cassandra/v2.go, src/control-plane-services/event-ledger/internal/db_client/cassandra/v2_test.go
A guarded V3 writer contract and Cassandra implementation insert new event keys or update rows only when the incoming timestamp is newer.
Cache state and event admission
src/control-plane-services/event-ledger/internal/cache/*
Single and bulk V3 upserts cache payloads up to 4 KiB, retain the latest timestamp per key, and send oversized payloads directly to the wrapped handler. Flush callbacks accept batches.
Scheduled flushes, retries, and draining
src/control-plane-services/event-ledger/internal/cache/*
The cache writes due entries in batches, updates pending state based on write results, retries selected failures, drains entries in oldest-first batches, and records flush metrics.
Service integration and cache configuration

Explanation

Issue #2153 requirements are met. wrapWithCache reads cache settings, requires GuardedEventsWriter, constructs CachingDBHandler, and starts the timing wheel when enabled. UpsertEventV3 and BulkUpsertEventsV3 write misses immediately and hold later events. flushDue writes pending records with their stored timestamps. completeFlush clears state only after success and reschedules failed or superseded entries. The timestamp check preserves an event that arrives during a flush. Drain flushes remaining entries in batches. Tests cover these behaviors, and the reported existing V3 tests pass.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #2153 scope. Cache wiring, guarded Cassandra writes, timing-wheel flushing, shutdown draining, configuration, metrics, documentation, and related tests support connecting the cache to the running Cassandra handler. No unrelated functional change is established by the reviewed evidence.

…ing wheel

Wire the local write cache to the events table. A cache miss is written at
once through a timestamp-guarded Cassandra write, with retries, and is kept
as a pending entry if every try fails. A later event for a cached key is
held and flushed by the timing wheel. Pending entries are written when the
service shuts down.

The guarded write (UpsertEventsIfNewerV3) inserts a missing row and
otherwise updates it only when the stored timestamp is older, keeping
created_at. It is an optional GuardedEventsWriter interface, so the cache
refuses to start over a handler without it. cache.enabled now takes effect,
and its max size and flush interval are set from the service config.

Known limitations: a held event is acknowledged before it is durable, so a
crash can lose up to one flush interval; two events inside one millisecond
can lose the second, because Cassandra stores milliseconds; and an event
with a payload over 4 KiB bypasses the cache and uses the unguarded upsert.

…s write failures once

A bulk request flushed the entries evicted by each miss on its own, so a slow
database could hold the request for the flush timeout once per eviction.
BulkUpsertEventsV3 now collects the evicted entries across the batch and
flushes them in one call.

writeMisses logged a warning and also returned the error, so one failure was
reported twice. It now returns an error that says how many misses failed, after
how many attempts, and that they were kept for a later flush.

Relates to #2153

Route oversized records through the timestamp-guarded writer.

UpsertEventV3 sends oversized records directly to the unguarded writer. BulkUpsertEventsV3 does the same after writing cacheable misses. An older oversized record can therefore overwrite a newer record for the same key in Cassandra. Route both oversized paths through handler.flush.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve evicted records when every flush attempt fails.

flushEvicted removes pending records from the cache before it calls flushWithRetry. When all attempts fail, the function only logs "dropped evicted cache entries that could not be written". The previously acknowledged events are then absent from both the cache and Cassandra, so the cache violates the contract that failed flushes remain pending and are rescheduled.

Restore the failed records to the cache, or return the flush error to a caller that can persist and reschedule them.

Await handler completion before draining the cache.

Shutdown waits only five seconds, but request handlers can remain active for up to two minutes. If srv.Shutdown times out, the code still calls conns.DrainWriteCache. Drain stops the timing wheel and scans pending entries, while UpsertEventV3 can still add a pending cache entry. That entry can be added after the final scan and remain unsent.

Drain the cache only after all V3 handlers have stopped admitting writes. Preserve the cache's documented behavior for callers that honor this ordering.
