Hi @mherger

As discussed, I've had a first go at defining the set of "Goals" that we will use as the starting point for creating the more detailed Roadmap.

Obviously, this is only my reading of your thinking and my views on what I think is the direction you want to go in. It may be completely wrong, so feel free to change/add/remove, suggest something completely different. I won't be offended.

This is what It looks like in my editor, so it's easier to read without having to merge the PR :

Thanks for this first draft!

I decided to create a closed group to discuss this and related topics. Can you access https://forums.slimdevices.com/forum/developer-forums/roadmap-strategy-where-next?

Heh... this is the first time I set up a new channel, I think! All the others must have existed before I took over. Anyway: I tweaked a few more settings. Could you please try again?

I'm not sure remarks related to the roadmap are appropriate here, but what's really bugging me (for the last 15 years) is that LMS is not packaged in distro repos. Especially now we can see with the analytics that 25% of users are using Debian (not docker), it really should be available in debian repo. I know this is a huge task with all the vendoring and CPAN incompatibilities, but to stay relevant I really think this should be part of a technical roadmap.

For what it's worth, I could volunteer to get packages into Fedora, if others could volunteer to help with:

  • Removing the last few remaining non-free parts bundled with the source code.
  • Ensuring LMS is compatible with the latest upstream versions of CPAN modules and transcoding binaries.
