📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughDuplicate-message errors now leave locally stored messages marked as sent instead of failed. Channel state handling preserves a server creation date when available and uses the local date otherwise. Retry handling and tests cover duplicate responses. ChangesDuplicate Message State

Should we rethrow it if we are handling the exception?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I don't think it should. The composer treats a throw as a failed send (_sendOrUpdateMessage in stream_message_composer.dart): onMessageSent never fires, and onError fires for a message the list shows as sent. An app that shows a "failed to send" toast from onError would show it for a message that was delivered.
Returning the local copy keeps both callbacks accurate:
if (e is StreamChatNetworkError && e.isMessageAlreadyExistsError) {
return SendMessageResponse()..message = _markMessageAsSent(message);
}This needs _markMessageAsSent to return the sent message (suggestion on that method). The new tests would then expect the future to complete instead of throwsA.
I tried this on the PR head, with the new tests changed to await the call (the timed-out test keeps its throwsA, since its first attempt really does time out). All 225 tests in channel_test.dart, stream_chat_error_test.dart and retry_queue_test.dart pass, and removing the duplicate branch makes the group fail.
If the rethrow stays, the sendMessage dartdoc should say that the future can still complete with an error after the message is marked as sent (STYLE_GUIDE, Writing prompts for good documentation: "If there are Future values involved, what are the guarantees? Can they complete with an error?").

lets log this only when we don't handle the error
There was a problem hiding this comment.
If sendMessage returns instead of rethrowing (see the other thread), the retry queue never sees this error. Then this change and _isAlreadySent can be reverted entirely. I checked: with retry_queue.dart reset to master, "marks a timed-out send as sent once its retry is rejected as a duplicate" still passes.
If the rethrow stays, skip the log for the handled case. Use continue rather than return, which would leave the loop with _isProcessing still true:
| logger?.severe('Error while retrying message ${message.id}', error); | |
| if (_isAlreadySent(error)) continue; | |
| logger?.severe('Error while retrying message ${message.id}', error); |
After that, the guard and comment below go back to master's comment and a plain channel.state?.updateMessage(message);. That also drops the "stored by the server" wording (STYLE_GUIDE, No server or transport details in docs or comments).
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I checked the error against the backend. It has one source, ErrMessageWithIDAlreadyExists (code 4, HTTP 400), and no other error contains both fragments, so the predicate is safe.
On porting to v11: v11 replaced StreamChatNetworkError with StreamChatException and deleted stream_chat_error.dart. channel.dart and retry_queue.dart merge there without conflicts but won't compile, so the getter needs a new home, for example an extension on StreamApiException checking code == StreamErrorCode.inputError. Two things keep that port small:
- Use
_whenSendingMessageonly in the new tests. 5 of the 6channel_test.dartconflicts against v11 come from the ~13 existing stubs it rewrites, and v11 already rewrote those with its ownapiException(...)helper. - Reverting
retry_queue.dart(see that thread) leaves one file fewer to port.
Smaller test notes:
_whenSendingMessage,_inputErrorand_messageAlreadyExistsErroruse nothing frommain(), so they can be top-level functions after it. That's where TESTING.md keeps setup helpers.- The
isMessageAlreadyExistsErrortests instream_chat_error_test.dartbuildStreamChatNetworkError.raw(...)with nodata, which also makesisRetriabletrue. A real 400 always carriesdata, so reusing the_inputErrorshape fromchannel_test.dartkeeps them realistic. - The new group is nested three levels deep in
channel_test.dart. TESTING.md calls more than one level of nesting a signal to split, and STYLE_GUIDE nameschannel_send_test.dartas the split for this file. v11 has no such file yet, so moving these five tests into one would also land on v11 without conflicts.

After the state == null guard, state?.updateMessage reads as "might be null" when it can't be, and _findMessageInLocalState already uses state!. The guard itself has to stay: dispose() clears state, so a channel disposed while the send is in flight reaches this catch with no state. Returning the sent message lets the call site build its response from it (see the rethrow thread).

Description of the pull request
When a send reaches the server but its response is lost (connection drop, timeout, edge 5xx) or the edge retries the request itself, the same message id is sent again and the server rejects it with HTTP 400, code 4,
a message with ID … already exists.Channel.sendMessagetreated that like any other failure, so a message the server stored was shown as failed, overwriting the server copy delivered bymessage.new, until the next reconnect re-queried the channel.What changes
StreamChatNetworkError.isMessageAlreadyExistsError(@internal) recognises the rejection: code 4 and a message containing botha message with IDandalready exists, so other code-4 "already exists" errors (poll options, votes) don't match.Channel.sendMessagemarks the message as sent on that rejection and still rethrows the error to the caller.message.newsurvives.RetryQueueno longer writes its failed copy back over the message after a retry gets this rejection.Alignment with iOS and Android (AND-1542, CHA-5603)
