We already show the red dot over the dock icon if there is a PM count in macOS.

There is WIP PR #385 which updates the tray icon on PM (same as favicons).

Currently, we don't have a proper method to get the PM count. We have implemented the electron bridge (it passes the data from the web app to electron) in zulip/zulip#8520 and with #428 we will have the detailed unread counts (mention, PM etc).
