What is the motivation for this separation? At first I thought it made sense but after re-implementing a number of methods in a PHLabel subclass I am not so sure about it anymore. Shouldn't any object have the chance of becoming active itself?

(Maybe easier to discuss irl but wanted to leave that somewhere) :)
