Cannot send a message to users with whom I have no message history

Describe the bug
I'm using Beta on Chrome 98 for Mac, and I can't send a message to a user I have not previously messaged. If I open the dev console, I see the error cannot read property "id" of null.

There are no issues with sending DMs to users with whom I have previously messaged.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Navigate to messages
2. Type a message to a valid user you have not already messaged (first-time message)
3. Press "send"
4. Message will not send or appear in history

Expected behavior
Message sending successfully when I click the "send" button.
