Hide navigation if only single page available

I've seen a few mkdocs-material sites do this, but I can't see to find an answer.

In the material docs, it says you can hide the navigation menu from showing on certain pages by appending a setting at the top of the markdown page. Such as:

---
hide:
  - navigation
---

# Page title

However, is their a way to do this automatically if there's no other menu items in the navigation? I have an about page, and the file exists in the root folder, with no other menus associated to it. So it just shows "about" in the nav menu with nothing else.

Just to clarify, I'm speaking about the left side navigation, not the "About" in the tabs at the top.
