Merges stdlib-sync -> master

Over in GH#4911 I made some changes in response to review. These changes keep things relatively in sync.

@brettcannon I'm going ahead and merging these changes w/o approval, in order to get a new version out. I think that's probably fine now that we've stabilized the API in the stdlib.
