This is a request for the following Unicode codepoints, used in a number of colonial Latin alphabets for transcribing the Mayan languages:

  • U+A72A Ꜫ LATIN CAPITAL LETTER TRESILLO
  • U+A72B ꜫ LATIN SMALL LETTER TRESILLO
  • U+A72C Ꜭ LATIN CAPITAL LETTER CUATRILLO
  • U+A72D ꜭ LATIN SMALL LETTER CUATRILLO
  • U+A72E Ꜯ LATIN CAPITAL LETTER CUATRILLO WITH COMMA
  • U+A72F ꜯ LATIN SMALL LETTER CUATRILLO WITH COMMA

(U+A728 Ꜩ LATIN CAPITAL LETTER TZ and U+A729 ꜩ LATIN SMALL LETTER TZ, which are also Parra Mayanist letters, are already supported by Junicode.)

“Cuatrillo” is typographically a dotless J with a flag, perhaps a bit wider. “Tresillo” is a bit more complicated, but usually looks somewhat like a reversed ezh (Ƹ) with a bevelled corner.

The characters are described in more detail on this SIL page or in their Unicode proposal, which provides a number of examples. They are present in the SIL Latin fonts (Gentium, Andika, Charis, Doulos) and the shapes used there seem appropriate.

I’m not aware of any combining marks for which support is necessary for these characters, but it would be nice to have them in both Roman and Italic.

As these aren’t medievalist characters, I understand if you decide not to encode, but as they are mostly standalone characters without need for any special features, I am hopeful.

It's true that Junicode supports a number of fields that have nothing to do with the Middle Ages, but it has never supported Native American languages. As you can see in #318, I have decided not to get Junicode into any new areas. So, regretfully, I won't be adding these Mayanist characters.

Of course, as Junicode is an Open Source project, everyone is free to fork it and add whatever they need.
