Initialisation of the long expected GUI

Hi Y'all,

I started working on a GUI that can be used to access and manipulate AeoLiS' input files. I am thinking about a window with tabs where some related parameters are grouped.

This makes me wonder:

• What tabs would be appropriate?
• Maybe we can enrich the tabs with a direct visualization of for instance input and forcing conditions inside the GUI similar to our current 'visualization' flag that saves input to figures.
• How to deal with the large volume of input parameters and their defaults. Maybe we can use colors?
• We could add a run button to start the model run.

I would welcome some feedback about this.

Great idea! A wishlist from my side:

MAIN LAYOUT:

• Two permanent panels; left for input (incl. all content-tabs) and right the visualization
• Update (circular?) button on top of the boundary between the panels to update the figures in the visualization panel

WISHLIST LEFT PANEL (INPUT):

• Add detailed description to each variable (maybe read from configuration file?)
• For processes boolean panel; visualize process dependencies; (maybe visualize as dependency tree with each process being a block with option of turning off/on; if processes upstream are turned off, show warning that this influences processes downstream)

WISHLIST RIGHT PANEL (VISUALIZATION):

• In the visualization panel two subplots (top vs bottom)

  1. top-panel: Domain visualization:

     • Grid, including correct rotation, resolution, size, etc.
     • Boundary condition definitions
     • One spatial variable can be chosen on top (e.g., zb, zne, rhoveg, ...)
     • Optional: Live update of time-dependent variable direction (linked to bottom subplot)

  2. bottom-panel: Timeseries visualization

     • Timeseries with starttime, endtime (optional: output times)
     • Nice if input in seconds is directly converted to datetime to see if correctly interpretated
     • One temporal variable chosen to plot (e.g., water level, wave height, ...)
     • For vector variables; determine if component-based or magnitude+direction
     • Optional: Timeslider to project currect direction of plotted variable to upper plot

OPTIONAL: Input-file generator

• Generator for x-y grid (accounting for correct structure/order of cells i.c.m. grid rotation and boundary definitions)
• Generator for other variables (constant values; gradients, boolean) or even interpolator based on *.xyz input
• Generator of simple timeseries (could be usefull for placeholders?); constant value over time, sinusoidal, ...
