Morning all,
after fiddling all September (and longer) I decided to ask someone who knows their way around. In brief:

Debian 12 rental v-server with Xfce4 installed (but same trouble with Plasma)
obviously no soundcard
xrdp, xorgxrdp, freerdp2-dev, pulseaudio, pulseaudio-utils, pavucontrol installed from the Debian repos (but also no luck with compiling the newest versions of xrdp, and xorgxrdp)
modules compiled with your script, no problem
connection to server works fine with Remmina as well as Guacamole
no audio forwarding

What I think I understand is

the null-sink is created
the xrdp-sink is created
and then it doesn’t work 😆

Seriously, is there more information to be taken from this? Any other logs that could be of interest?
It sort of feels as if there are unset environmental variables involved, but from what I read in older cries for help, there is no necessity for these anymore?

Very grateful for a nudge in the right direction...

Due to my sloppily written setup script the $HOME/.local files belong to root. Hence xrdp-chansrv could not write to its log file, and crashed.
I am so sorry I wasted your time. Is there a piggy bank somewhere that I can feed soon to make me feel less awful?

That all looks OK.

Can you check that the client is set up correctly? In Remmina you'll need to set the 'Audio output mode' in the advanced settings.

‘Connected failed’ caught my eye.
There are two sockets in /run/xrdp/sockdir: xrdp:disconnect_display_10, and xrdp_display_10.
Trying to find the missing socket gave me
find: ‘/proc/1161/task/1161/net’: Invalid argument
and finally looking for this process resulted in tutor 1161 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? Z 15:29 0:00 [xrdp-chansrv] <defunct>
Is this helpful, or is it just a description of what we know already?

Looks like chansrv has died. That provides the interface for the sound, and creates the sockets.

Can you log out and back in? Check xrdp-chansrv is active and try again.

I can only log out the user from the xrdp connection. This doesn't do anything. From my understanding xrdp-chansrv doesn't start at all. Consequently there is no chansrv log file.

I set the log levels for xrdp and sesman to debug and attached two cleaned up files covering the time from reboot to 'xrdp connection established' Hopefully there is something useful in there. (And I hope I didn't delete anything important with the huge amount of bot garbage...)

chansrv is started (along with the session) by sesman. It looks like it's failing very quickly. I think we need to get to the bottom of that.

What's your version of xrdp from xrdp -v?

Restart chansrv as follows:-

Create a session.
Check chansrv isn't running. ps -ef | grep xrdp-chansrv will probably show you it's defunct.
Check the chansrv FUSE filesystem isn't mounted with mount | grep xrdp-chansrv. If you get a line like this:-
```
xrdp-chansrv on /home/tutor/thinclient_drives type fuse.xrdp-chansrv (...)
```
unmount the FUSE filesystem with fusermount -u /home/tutor/thinclient_drives (or wherever the line shows the filesystem to be mounted).
Create a terminal window in the session. Enter the command xrdp-chansrv to start chansrv in a terminal. See what happens.
To get xrdp to connect to chansrv, you'll need to disconnect the session (not log out) and reconnect it. See what happens to chansrv running in the terminal.

Please ask me if any of that isn't clear.

@subcupp - above all, thanks for your honesty!

It really helps other users reading this thread later on. I was a sysadmin for many years, and I'm sure that's a mistake I've made myself in the past. Amongst many others, that is.

You've not wasted my time - one of the reasons I do this is to keep my brain active, and this has been an interesting chat. For reference, as far as piggy banks go, the project has a link on the main page at https://github.com/neutrinolabs/xrdp, and in general github developers have 'Sponsor' buttons on their profile pages.
