Trying to implement service mapping using custom objects, having a hard time

I'm starting with a simple scenario, make virtual machines grouped by the service they belong to.

First I created a new Custom Object Type called Service and gave it a Name field. Next is establishing a relationship with Virtual Machines and so far I've tried two approaches:

1- Add a Custom Field to Virtual Machines with the type of Service: This is already proving challenging because the Related object type dropdown shows "Custom Objects > Custom Object" at best, so went with it for testing. Navigating to Virtual Machines after that shows an error about NoReverseMatch.

2- Do it the other way around: From the Service custom object type I added a field of type Object and specified Virtual Machine as related type. Sure it does "work" but I'd like to be able to see from the Virtual Machines list which Service each VM belongs to. Was thinking of using Custom Links but I only know how to link things using "object" context in Jinja. Tried to learn more and it seems the manage.py NbShell would have helped, but the lsmodels() does not seem to include something for Custom Objects. This is where I'm stuck at.

It really does feel the first approach would have been the friendlier one but doesn't seem to be accounted for yet. Any ideas or feedback would be appreciated.

When I make an Object field (e.g., IP Address) in a Custom Object Type, the view page for the "Related Object Type" (e.g., IP Address) breaks from that point on and shows this error page:

That pretty much means I can't use Object fields.
