Is it a bug?

  • I know this is an issue with the app, and contacting Mullvad support is not relevant.

I have checked if others have reported this already

  • I have checked the issue tracker to see if others have reported similar issues.

Current Behavior

If I'm using Mullvad VPN, version 2025.2 with WireGuard:

  • Local networking enabled
  • Tunnel Protocal - WireGuard
  • WireGuard settings: Port: auto, Obfuscation: Auto or Off, Quantum: Auto or Off, IP: Auto

My SMB/Samba/Windows file sharing to my local NAS disconnects within an hour. Even when I'm actively writing something to the network share.

If I switch to OpenVPN with default settings (everything set to auto). My SMB connection to my local NAS stays on for hours without disconnecting.

Expected Behavior

Enabling Mullvad VPM with WireGuard should not prematurely disconnect my SMB connection to my NAS.

Workaround seems to be to switch the protocol to OpenVPN.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Install Mullvad VPN, version 2025.2
  2. Enable Local Networking
  3. Enable WireGuard tunneling, with all automatic settings, or disabling most of the settings, but still using WireGuard
  4. From macOS mount, a NAS shared driva via SMB (smb:///)
  5. Wait for about an hour
  6. Network share will disconnect

Failure Logs

I can confirm this as well, I was just about to make a bug report on it.
I've also noticed I can't resolve the DNS name of my NAS when this happens, so maybe it's related to local name resolution? I haven't tried accessing my server via IP yet when it happens, but I will test it when I am able to.

Thanks for reporting this.

If it happens again, we would appreciate if you would send us the logs. You can send them privately using Settings/Support/Report a problem in the app. Be sure to include a link to this issue, as well as the timestamp at which the outage started.

@iblowmymind are you also on MacOS?

Yep, I am. Also haven't been able to reproduce yet, but I'll let you know when I do!

And of course, after switching to OpenVPN and back to WireGuard the issue isn't reproducing as frequently as before. I'll use WireGuard for a longer period and see if the same disconnects happen again.

Well that's weird, the issue occurred again and I tried to "Report a problem" however, it said it failed to send. I even made sure to turn off any firewalls and even restarted Mullvad, it still refused to send the logs.
