... the scanner does not work when enabling it to work before the map is revealed (assuming the map is not partially filled with unseeable garbage sectors/teleport closets to reveal 10 of 10) if you manage to pick up a computer area map or similar with a temporary or no scanner at all.
I should personally mention that is the setting I use all the time to keep myself unspoiled for most of the map, new to me or not.

P.S. Might suggest looking into seeing what happens if the revealed scanner is currently active and if you pick up an item with a timed scanner to see if it dispels HsN's scanner from there.
