my needs driven by wanting easy defaults around local custom projections, I'm tired of constructing proj strings and doing c(-1, 1, -1,1) * width for a four figure extent 😃

Hi @mdsumner! I would love to join forces with you on anything you find interesting (AOI/place, gdalio/whatarelief/climateR, data catalogs of all sorts). I have been trying to muster up the confidence to reach out to you but always feel things need to be in better shape before that :)

I will take a look at place too and maybe we can find areas of overlap/divergence and bring them together? From the looks of it we are after a similar use case (easily defining units to extract/manipulate data sources). I 100% concede AOI is a little USA-centric with states, counties and FIP codes taking the "priority".

In the near future I was hoping to get AOI up to rOpenSci... would slinging this work under either AOI or place and co-submitting that be of interest to you?

for sure, always up for exploring - there's so much unused power in this gdal stuff I'm just excited to see others take it up 😃

I got so much seeing your vsi talk, there are so many things that are important about it

anyway the place thing for me is about having an object that's sort of approximate, capture that back and forth that always happens when creating a map or hitting a dataset, but being able to change just one thing at a time, tweak the projection or make it slightly wider, or set the resolution etc - those interactive tweaks of just one parameter are what I like 👌
