maybe not in a completely new plugin but into the cxx frontend? after all it's only needed here...

mhhh .. could be 👍 although i am not sure ... a progressbar is nothing everyone wants .. so it also could be optional for cxx-users

Then I'd make it optional in cxx...as long as we use gems for our plugins
it feels kind of icky to pile up a huge number of plugins just to get the
behavior the normal user would expect.
