Is there a way to get rid of the black bars on either side of the screen?

In /boot/config.txt there is this section which you can edit (change hdmi_mode), then reboot:

# set HDMI mode to 16 (1024x768) for tablet compatibility
# change hdmi_mode to 35 (1280x1024) or 85 (1280x720) for larger area
