Hi,
I want to keep an eye on the size of (my) docker volumes (/var/lib/docker/volumes/...).
I currently use 'cAdvisor', but it doesn't provide (ready-to-use) metrics regarding these 'docker volumes'. At least, i can't see it.
( 'Node_exporter' was another candidate, but it does not provide such (disk-level-size) metrics either.)
What am i missing? In other words: which prometheus exporter is fine for this job and/or any suggestions on how to obtain such metrics would be nice ...

cAdvisor monitors the disks on the node, and the size of container writable layers, but doesn't explicitly monitor docker volumes. For disk-level metrics, I think those should be under the container_fs_usage_bytes metric with container name = '/

I have the same issue, it seems to me that container_fs_usage_bytes returns the value of the disk space used by the running container, which is the same as docker system df -v returning the value of Containers space usage.

My use case is that I want to use prometheus to monitor local docker volume usage (/var/lib/docker/volumes), the same as @WimLambrecht. But a solution doesn't seem to exist using any existing tools/exporters. Has anyone solved this problem with cAdvisor, node-exporter or any other tool that exists? I know I could use node exporter with push-gateway or something similar and set up static directory monitoring but that seems less than ideal.

@dashpole, is it your understanding that container_fs_usage_bytes should actually report the docker volume usage or is it actually just the temporary data used by the running container that will be released back to the filesystem when the container is removed?

It should not report the docker volume usage. It is reporting the amount used on the filesystem containing /var/lib/docker, and the capacity/available of that filesystem. This is temporary data that is released when the container is removed.
