Accessing model_field inside metadata

How do I access the model field (if any) that is associated with the DRF field inside a custom metadata class?

The current approach I have seems rather clumsy. Is there a better approach available?

class MyMetadata(metadata.SimpleMetadata):
    def get_field_info(self, field):
        field_info = super().get_field_info(field)

        try:
            model = getattr(field.parent.Meta, 'model')
        except AttributeError:
            pass
        else:
            info = model_meta.get_field_info(model)
            try:
                model_field = info.fields_and_pk[field.source]
            except KeyError:
                pass
            else:
                # do stuff now that we have the `model_field` of this particular field
