How to refer to pair and its next char?

I have the file:

foo={bar}: qux

I want to select {bar}: by using bar's hat. When I say "take pair bar past its next char", just {bar} is selected - obviously because "its" refers to bar, and its next char is }.

Could you please tell me what my options are here without mentioning :'s hat? I came up with "take pair bar past end of its paint", but it wouldn't work with foo={bar baz}: qux. Are there better phrases that refer to what comes after the pair?

That works. But how? Do I understand this correctly from a practical perspective?

• "pair bar" ({bar}) becomes reference 1
• "tail paint" and not "paint pair bar" is recognized as belonging together (greedy matching like in regexes?)
• "tail paint" creates working reference 2 (the "containing" paint foo={bar}:)
• "tail paint" extends just the end of reference 1 to the end of reference 2
• "take" selects reference 1

Maybe the cheatsheet should use the word "containing" in "Extend through end of [modifier]" (explanation for "tail [modifier]"). Besides the greedy matching behavior, I think "containing" is key to understand this.

To select {bar baz}: in "foo={bar baz}:" qux, I can use "take tail inside string pair bar". 👍

Tail swallows the next modifier to make a new modifier which extends from the start of its input to the end of the modified input. Eg "tail paint" looks at its input (in this case the output of "pair bar") and uses that as the start of its output target, and then modifies its input using "paint" (so ie "paint pair bar"), and uses that as the end of its output target

The key here is the line in the modifiers table of the cheatsheet where it says “[scope]” Containing instance of [scope]

Nice that "take tail second next char pair bar" also works, which has a gap between the targets.
