MacOS M1 using podman-compose

mac m1 and docker desktop for map is unreliable, especially after reboot the docker daemon will not run.

podman and podman-compose are able to fix this and run code-server better.

however unable to to save yet.

docker-compose up had no issue but podman-compose up give the following error

Failed to save 'test.py': Unable to write file 'vscode-remote://10.0.0.174:8443/config/workspace/test.py' (NoPermissions (FileSystemError): Error: EACCES: permission denied, open '/config/workspace/test.py')

unable to save anything.
any documentation for m1 mac vs-code server using podman would be ideal.
some permission issue

Just double-checking, you're using coder's code-server and not microsoft's code-server?

Yes using coder implementation. Working as expected with docker-compose

tried to add :z at the end of the volume mount as suggested by podman documentation but did not work

cool cool! i'm not super familiar with podman but maybe @code-asher is

The volume mounts appear to always be owned by root inside the container but since we switch to a user called coder it has no access to its own files.

I am not sure if this is the best way to solve it but changing the mapping worked for me:

--uidmap 1000:0:1 --uidmap 0:1:1000

This will:

map UIDs 0-999 in the container to automatically assigned UIDs, but map UID 1000 in the container to the host user's UID
containers/podman#2898 (comment)

Here is the full command I ran using our codercom/code-server image (I am not sure how it would look in a compose file and I did not test the linuxserver/code-server image):

podman run -it --name code-server -p 127.0.0.1:8080:8080 -v "/home/coder/.config:/home/coder/.config" -v "/home/coder/src/code-server:/home/coder/project" --uidmap 1000:0:1 --uidmap 0:1:1000 codercom/code-server:latest
