@clentafrica/wg-design please use these writeups to create signs or posters that educate villagers on what waste to add and what to avoid in their compost

What Can Go Into the Compost?

Green Waste (Wet Materials)

Add these for nutrients and quick decomposition:

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps: Banana peels, orange rinds, tomato tops.
  • Fresh grass clippings: Collected from mowing your lawn.
  • Coffee grounds or tea leaves: With or without the filter.
  • Manure: From animals like goats, cows, or chickens (no meat-eating animals).

Brown Waste (Dry Materials)

Add these for structure and to balance moisture:

  • Dry leaves: Gathered from your yard or surroundings.
  • Twigs and branches: Broken into smaller pieces.
  • Shredded paper or cardboard: Avoid glossy or colored prints.
  • Straw or hay: A great carbon-rich material for layering.

What Should Stay Out of the Compost?

Avoid These to Keep Your Compost Healthy:

  • Meat, fish, or dairy products: They attract pests and create bad odors.
  • Oily or greasy foods: These are hard to decompose.
  • Plastics, glass, or metal: These do not break down in compost.
  • Diseased plants or weeds with seeds: They can spread diseases or grow in your compost.

Why Avoid These Items?

Adding these materials can:

  • Make your compost pile smell bad.
  • Attract animals and pests to your pile.
  • Harm the soil when the compost is used.

Remember the Golden Rule:

50% Green Waste + 50% Brown Waste = Perfect Compost!
Keep your pile damp, turn it regularly, and watch waste turn into healthy soil!

Let’s turn waste into a resource for our farms and gardens!
