Is enabling the rds_tools extension necessary when using Aurora Postgres?

According to this blog post and this documentation, it seems that executing CREATE EXTENSION rds_tools; is only necessary for RDS Multi-AZ DB clusters, and is not necessary for Aurora clusters. This blog post doesn't mention that the rds_tools extension is required for the JDBC wrapper to gather topology information from the cluster. Executing CREATE EXTENSION rds_tools; on an Aurora Postgres cluster writer node appears to work, but I just wanted to confirm that it's not necessary.
