SUMMARY

We are trying to set-up a new cluster with 4.16 and it will be a great enhancement to select the snapshots location. Now in previous versions of ACS we have 2 secondary storages and the location of snapshots and templates are random, in fact, we have the problem that in 1 secondary storage there isn't enough space and ACS tries to save snapshots there.

We think that you can set-up secondary storages for different purposes. So, for example, we can set-up one or more exclusive secondary storage for snapshots and others for templates and ISOs.

Thinking on scale up Cloudstack with lots of VM, we need to have several secondary storages for snapshots and select the snapshot location for each VM because we could have remote secondary storages location to copy snapshots to other Datacenters (If we have a good cross connect).

Last, maybe it will be necesary to make a warning about secondary storage capacity commited to place snapshots there or not.

Hi @soptecsn - AFAIK the templates and snapshots are ordered in secondary storage by their internal IDs in subdirectories, and the data is replicated across the different storages. Can you explain what do you mean by random location and describe the proposed changes?

Hi Nicolas, Well, in the issue we propose to select snapshots locations. Now in cloudstack we can't choose this, ACS save the snapshots in the same storage the VM is, and sometimes this causes lot of performance and space problems. So, if we want to prepare an specific infrastructure servers for snapshots, it will be great to select like "snapshots pools" so we can separate the snaps from the production VM storage. @soptecsn this is no longer an issue after the new secondary storage management feature (https://www.shapeblue.com/cloudstack-feature-deep-dive-secondary-storage-management/). Also advise if you need this issue if the fundamental problem is solved with this new feature?

Can you explain your 2nd requirement above?

One thing we can do is to allow users to select Zone as the snapshot location (for ex. take snapshot from Zone A but store/backup on Zone B)
