Error reading html style code

I asked claude code to do a bug report of a python module that uses html style syntax (because it's using flask). It thinks that any text of the form is actually: (i.e. it removes everything except for the first letter of the text in between the / and the >. The same thing happened for patterns like this: , which it reads as .
