Hook when a command terminates

Would it be possible to add a hook variable that would be triggered when a command finishes executing? The hook functions could have as parameter the exit status of the just finished command.

This would be similar to eshell-kill-hook.

This may be nice to have (I could see using it to send a notification with alert, for example). A way to achieve this is the following (it requires shell-side configuration, and I haven't tested it). vterm can trigger the execution of Emacs function, as long as they are in vterm-eval-cmds.

• Add a new binding to the list ("end-hook" vterm-end-command-hook)
• Write the function vterm-end-command-hook to do what you want. Let it take as first argument the exit status.
• Run vterm_cmd end-hook $? when your prompt is displayed

My proof of concept is echo "HI"; vterm_cmd message $?

A problem with this method is that the function will be called a large number of times.

I had a similar idea. However, with this approach, it's not possible to only show the notification if the buffer is invisible: I don't want to show notifications for commands that terminate in front of my eyes.

I hope this is the right place to continue the discussion. I want to add some tests (main reason #552). Possibly without sleep-related code, that is messy and unreliable. Do you have some suggestion to improve this code?
