The transportation layer indicates a network of gb-motorway on officially designated motorways in the United Kingdom. Conventionally, these motorways are depicted in blue on road maps. This happens to match the blue this style applies to Interstates in the United States, so it should be pretty intuitive.

This would be an AARW-specific customization, because the upstream project has decided to vary only the shields based on route networks, in keeping with American cartographic convention.

My bad, we already color the motorways blue. Closing in favor of #6.
