using perl5 for strawberry perl?

So I want to help strawberry perl to have windows arm build. do you rely on https://github.com/Perl/perl5?

We don't depend on the perl5 github repo but do build from the release tarballs on either perl.com or metacpan.com. See the Perl::Dist::Strawberry::Step::InstallPerlCore steps in the various config files under https://github.com/StrawberryPerl/Perl-Dist-Strawberry/tree/master/share (the *.pp files).

Building from a git repo requires a few extra steps which I have never looked into.

It is currently set up to use gcc (particularly the build-extlibs component) but there have been some initial efforts to use MSVC. That would hopefully obviate the need to build our own external libs.

when I do compilation in perl5, It did compiled successfully, perl and cpan works in arm64 natively, not sure if in the strawberryperl is the same way.

That's good to hear. Which compiler did you use?

The caveat is that Strawberry Perl is the whole system, including the external utilities that live under the .../c/ directory (these are from build-extlibs), and also the modules that are built and which live under the .../perl/vendor directory.

Edit - it's not really a caveat but it is how the whole system is set up.

It was clang-cl (from msvc), with the help of nmake

Alright. so msys2 does support windows arm, the only exception is that clang is only available compiler, and gcc-compat.

We derive most of our patches for the external libs from MSYS2, so presumably that aspect is covered. The issue, though, is that the extlibs build script has many checks that require gcc.

This is one of the reasons a possible switch to MSVC is appealing, as then we could leverage the vcpkg libs instead of building our own.

Looks like some deps are having some issues being compiled in arm64 on Windows - ideally the outcome would be to have a native arm64 of Strawberry Perl, as that in itself is a dep for some other applications that also are trying to build native arm versions (orca slicer is one of them I'm working on)

I could manage to build, install Perl5 directly from source and also with spbuild.

There was no issue found for me while building and installing perl5. There were few test failures for Perl 5 when tested with command "nmake test"

The deps you are talking about is external libs repository?
If yes, which external libs build you are looking to target?
There are many external libs, it may not be feasible to build all of them from Window ARM64, I think.

Can you please explain little more on what needs to be done, I can try to help.

Thanks @vask2108 - I'm trying to build Strawberry Perl as arm64 native so I can use it as a dep for another project (Orca Slicer), but it seems like currently with some of the deps for Strawberry Perl it's not possible - I have not had a chance to dig into this more yet however.

@vask2108 - the external libs build system is at https://github.com/StrawberryPerl/build-extlibs

It is currently geared for gcc and uses bash scripts to build and collate.

The other factor is that the dynamic libs are built with underscores appended to the names, e.g. zlib__.dll. This is to avoid clashes with DLLs provided by other systems.

Those are not hard requirements for future builds, though.
