Medium & Semibold Weight

This might be a stupid question but why are the medium and semibold weights only available for the variable version but not as static weights?

It isn't stupid. :-)

When Merriweather was originally made it only had the weights you see but when we expanded to a VF we offered more weight options. This is something that should be extended back to the original version along with the much improved Cyrillic support and improved kerning. I'll see what I can do this year to make that happen.
